  • "Our 6th visit to Capella, which has become an annual home from home for us and our dog."

Clean and comfortable and so handily placed for the town centre, it has been much improved by the addition of new external doors since our last visit. Because of the time of year we visit, it doesn't particularly bother us, but as has been mentioned by many other reviewers, the yard really could do with some TLC. The view from the kitchen window is spectacular, but spoiled somewhat by the yard wall with peeling paint/plaster in the foreground. Nevertheless, we hope to return next year if at all possible.

Whoever is cleaning is ripping someone off. I filled my dogs water bowl when we arrived a spilled some on the floor. On cleaning it up it was evident that the floor had not been washed for some time. The kettle lid and handle, major touch points, were black with muck. I actually washed things down due to the muck, before using. There was not even a tea towel to dry dishes. I went ot to buy one. The sofas are horrid, so uncomfortable and to sit four you'd Need to sit poker straight. The beds are horrific. There are a number of mattress protectors on the bed to try to disguise the springs. My god we all had the most horrific sleep experience. The matresses need to be binned. They are disgraceful. The location is great but just so uncomfortable. The courtyard is disgusting. It's never had a brush or a jet wash, covered with moss and slime. Really slippy. Such a shame

This was not a home from home stay. All the previous complaints are still an issue the bath plug doesn't work and both the bath and sink plugs are very slow to drain, the shower leaks from above the head. There are crusty white towels and bobbly bed linen and the mattress is unbearably uncomfortable. All the furniture is cheap and rickety. The kettle leaks at the lid which is dangerous the bread bin is disgusting. The heating is extremely difficult to get on. The back yard is grim and bleak. The sofas are uber uncomfortable and no throws provided on the cold black leather suite. Overall we couldn't wait to leave, no effort or homely touches whatsoever have been put into the property or garden.

  • "We arrived to a very dirty property with 2 young children."

We spent hours cleaning on what should have been an enjoyable first night of our holiday. We contacted the office at the first available time (the following morning) to complain about state of the cottage. There is a notice on the board in the kitchen stating the opening hours of the office in the town and as it was closed that night we went first thing the following morning. They said they would pass on the information to the owners. There was glass on the floor, a smelly wet rug in the living room, dog food on the floors and even in the drawers with the cutlery in the kitchen. The settees were so dirty we didn’t even want to sit on them so ended up sitting on towels all week. If it hadn’t been our only holiday we would’ve left immediately to come home. The plug in the bath also didn’t work not ideal with young children, however maintenance did come out to fix it, only for it to break again. We visited the office 5 times on our holiday to try and get updates as we hadn’t heard anything. We sent photos of what we had to clean but because we hadn’t contacted the owners immediately (probably written somewhere in the small print) they said we were in breach of the contract so they wouldn’t do anything about it and offered us £50. The final kick in the teeth was the check out time was 9am for a deep clean of the cottage. The downstairs definitely had not been cleaned for our arrival. We will never be booking this cottage again or using lakelovers.

The main bedroom was good, the twin room was very small. We couldn't work out the radiators in the bedrooms so the rooms were often cold, they seemed to work independently from the central heating system? The bathroom was good and warm. Downstairs was fine - we used the boost on the central heating each day which made it warm. There were lots of games on a shelf which we took full advantage of. Again the kitchen was fine and was well equipped. The bread bin was filthy though and needs a thorough scrub! I found this strange as the kitchen was clean and the oven was spotless. Overall, I would recommend the cottage. It was in a quiet part of town, a fine minute walk to the town centre. We parked outside the property throughout our stay. Keswick is a lovely, bustling town set in a stunningly beautiful part of the world!

The only downside for us was the outside area, it really needs some work to make it somewhere you would want to use, which we would have. A dividing fence to the next doors yard/windows and some time spend tidying, cleaning and painting would make it a lovely space. Also the TV in the double room didnt work. .. Property was in a great place for us, ideal bolt hole however, the beds! What can I say...I can still feel every spring in the mattress. My Daughter had the same problem in a single bed in the second room and she's young. Cheap beds, and mattress protectors on beds are flat and useless. Duvet needs to be heavier, higher tog as its not heavy enough at night. Property was not what I would class as clean when I got there. Front of washer was disgusting as were handles on cooker. Sockets, skirting and corners were thick with muck. Considering the previous occupants clean, then the cleaner it was filthy. Then we have to clean and leave early for a deep clean. I did more than the cleaner ever has. We left it cleaner than we found it! If the beds were improved, and the cleaner did a decent job I would not hesitate to stay again. It was a shame. I expect the owner pays a substantial amount to have the property cleaned as well. It needs a good clean. Also, the property is quite cold unless you override the heating. It got quite cold when we stayed, probably benefit from some insulation and seing around the external doors.

It was clean and well equipped. The street was generally very quiet in terms of noise and we managed to get parked close by despite the busy streets around. This might not be the same in the August period though! The twin room is fairly small and the fridge just isn't big enough for food for a family of 4, with only a freezer box compartment in the top. That was fine as we were able to buy food at regular intervals being so close to town. Not ideal if you've brought or ordered a big food shop for arrival! Just to be aware, for anyone with dogs the enclosed yard at the back is only enclosed for dogs the size of a Yorkshire terrier having a 2 foot wall between it and next doors yard - ours jumped straight over and so couldn't go out unsupervised. All in all though a good cottage and great location if you want to be right in the centre of things

We hadn't realised that pets were not allowed upstairs and as our dog is used to sleeping in our bedroom one of us had to sleep downstairs. This presented us with the issue of having to sleep on a 2 seater sofa, until we went out and brought a camp bed. There were multiple stains on the landing and main bedroom carpet, indicating that, in the past, it's likely that pets have been upstairs on a more regular basis. A stair gate would have been a simple addition to the property in this situation. In the whole the property was clean and tidy. We did leave a day early and on the second to last day the front door lock failed, which meant we had to bring all our gear through the back door. The lock smith did arrive just as we were about to set off, so had to leave him to it.

Also, there is no recycling bin provided, we had to take it to a car park in town, however we noticed that the other properties in the area had recycling bins. The small enclosed yard is disappointing, having no plants and little privacy. Despite these minor faults, the cottage is as described and a good base for a stay in Keswick.

All doors make a terrible noise when opening and shutting, and the fridge was over working and freezing the food. There was a problem with the water pressure which made a terrible noise every time you used the taps. This was due to ongoing problems in the Keswick area and there was a large hole in the back yard, which was a real problem with the dog. I understand that this was an unexpected issue, but when I went into the office they were not very helpful. We managed to speak to the workmen who were helpful and removed all the soil and rubble for us. The cottage was in a great position for easy access to Keswick.

Firstly on arrival (after a rough drive due to the weather) i took a cup to make a hot drink (first thing i always do) and the cup had a dog hair in it and tea stains on the outside so hadn't been washed properly... i came accross this with plates also and the wine glasses looked like they had been handled by people with greasy fingers. I therefore felt i had to wash all cuttlery/crockery before using, i washed extra that i didnt use because i felt i couldn't put them back dirty... The second thing i noticed was toothpaste around the wall just above the sink in the bathroom. This came off with a damp cloth (which i cleaned) so i can only presume this wasn't cleaned or checked. On a positive note, the bed was lovely and comfy and the property was warm enough and there was a good selection of DVD's which i made use of due to the wet weather. The road is quiet and i parked right outside and the wifi was great throughout. Key collection/drop off was easy - used the keybox on arrival as after 5pm and the lady was apologetic about the above when i dropped the keys off. I left a day earlier than expected but that was due to my little dog not settling so decided to head home. Would i visit this cottage again, probably not however there is nothing i havent mentioned that cannot be easily rectified for future guests.

  • "The property was perfectly satisfactory in most respects and we enjoyed our stay."

It is comfortable and well-situated but there are a few aspects that need addressing. The back yard is described as somewhere you could enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif but in reality, you would not wish to spend time in there in its present state. It is shabby, with litter in one corner, leaves in the grid and green mould on the flaking walls. It could be made quite presentable with a little effort. In addition, at least 2 drawers in the wardrobe in the 2nd bedroom are coming apart. Finally, the central heating comes on and off at seemingly random times. What is quite annoying is that these 3 points were raised by a previous reviewer just prior to our visit but had clearly been ignored.

We are disappointed to find the cottage has not lived up to the high standards we have set. As you have said in your review, the issues you raise are the same as those mentioned by the previous guest. A turnaround gives us only a few hours and unfortunately this is sometimes insufficient to time to address all problems. Once we were made aware of the issues we made arrangements to have them addressed as soon as was practical. Regards, Kath Crompton Property Owner

  • "The yard area was shabby and neglected ."

the wardrobe drawers were broken and would not open . the letter box was not fitted correct and front door wood flimsey . the inner door to the lounge was cracked . central heating erratic . no dustbin in yard , no re-cycle bag for bottles .

We are disappointed that the cottage did not live up to the high standards we have set. We thank you for bringing to our attention the items that need addressing and can reassure you these will addressed as a matter of urgency. The yard has suffered somewhat from the ravages of winter. We have arranged for the yard to be cleaned and painted. Regarding the inner door to the lounge, the property is over 100 years old and we wish to retain some of the character whilst also giving the cottage modern comforts. Whilst we try to set the central heating at a comfortable temperature sometimes clients feel the need to adjust to controls. As soon as we were made aware of this issue and the other problems you identified, we have made arrangements for them to be rectified. When we have tried to provide recycling facilities in the past, we have found that clients accidentally place waste in the wrong receptacles causing problems with collection. We have found it simpler to provide a single commercial waste bin. Regards, Kath Crompton Property Owner

  • "Spent a week here in February half term, lovely cosy little cottage which was in the perfect location for a short walk into town."

2 adults, 1 child & our dog, we found the space comfortable & relaxing, the wood burner was a great bonus although the central heating kept the cottage toasty. The only thing we missed was a dishwasher, otherwise the kitchen was fully equipped with everything you could need for cooking meals. Thanks for a lovely stay.
