  • "We had a wonderful stay at Smithy Cottage."

Over the years, we’ve rented many cottages and Airbnbs, but we’ve often been disappointed. This year was a special occasion, we wanted to create a good memory and Smithy Cottage certainly exceeded our expectations. It’s clear that a lot of love and attention to detail have gone into its refurbishment, creating a relaxing, comfortable, and creatively designed space. The views from the bedrooms overlook the Pennines, and we were lucky enough to witness spectacular sunrises. It’s also a perfect spot for stargazing. The beds are incredibly comfortable, ensuring a great night’s sleep, and we found the entire place to be very clean. The cottage is ideally located near the lakes, offering plenty of walking opportunities, and it’s conveniently close to Carlisle train station, which provides fast links to Glasgow and Edinburgh. The owners, who live nearby, showed exceptional hospitality, offering recommendations for local attractions and always being available to answer any questions. We truly had a fantastic time and were sad to leave. Smithy Cottage is a special place, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone who loves the countryside.

DALSTON

Carlisle 4.6 miles; Keswick 16 miles, Penrith 17.9 miles.

The village of Dalston sits within the Carlisle district of Cumbria, historically part of Cumberland. In the village square lies the red sandstone church of St Michael, dating back to the 13th century, whilst Dalston Hall is a magnificent Grade II listed building full of character and landscape gardens, which is often used as a wedding venue. About two miles south of Dalston is Rose Castle, the palace of the Bishops of Carlisle, which is not open to the public but may be viewed from the road. Carlisle can be reached in four and half miles, a 2000-year-old city with two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and one World Heritage Site, plus lots of pedestrianised shopping areas, award-winning malls, colourful farmer’s markets as well as a traditional Victorian indoor market.
