"Upon our arrival, we were told by a lady in a Range Rover that we couldn't park where we had due to farm traffic."
We told this lady, who didn't introduce herself that we were only unloading our cases then we would move. After entering the property, our first task was to get rid of all the flies that were in there. We ended up buying fly swatters and fly spray. Given that we were staying for two weeks, we only had one towel each for the fortnight and the bedding was not changed either. We did have trouble backing out from the allocated parking space due to the road outside the cottage being very busy and the speed of the passing traffic. We did enjoy our holiday but would opt for something quieter next time.

Apologies for the interaction you had with a neighbour on arrival, we hope that they were trying to be helpful and they likely didn't realise that you were only unloading. Sometimes flies can increase in the area due to the weather, we are sorry that some found their way in. A mid stay changeover is not standard in letting properties and we only wished you had contacted us as we would have been more than happy to drop off anything you required. We are also sorry that you didn’t find the cottage quiet enough for your holiday as this is not usually the case. We are glad to know that you enjoyed your stay overall. Property Owner

We arrived late and the lights were on making it feel so welcoming and there was a welcome note and gift from the owner. It is such an interesting place, quirky in the best sense, spacious, well-cared for and comfortable. The throws and log burner meant it was cosy, just right for a relaxing holiday.

- Very quiet despite located very close to a street. - We even got a welcoming gift together with a nice - handwritten - letter! - There was free of charge wood for the open fireplace in the living room. We felt very, very welcome. And would certainly book it again if we spent some more holidays in that area - for sure!

"Amazing stay in a lovely well equipped cottage."
They have thought of everything, kitchen had everything, games, books, toiletries. We took our 2 grandsons aged 4 and 8 and they loved it too. Presents were left for us all under the Xmas tree which was a lovely touch. The wifi was excellent. Plenty of space for everyone. An ideal base for getting around whilst thr cottage itself was lovely and tranquil. Would definitely recommend.

Wonderful quirky cottage with lots of character features. Extremely well equipped kitchen and great welcome basket of goodies. Wood burner worked a treat and together with ‘Stanley’ the aga kept the cottage cosy. The bathroom had a fantastic shower and roll top bath and complimentary toiletries provided. The beds were comfy and there is plenty of storage upstairs. Great information pack on the cottage and surrounding area and lots of books for both touring and reading. Internet connection was good. Good communication from the owner before and during our stay, thank you Fiona and Steve.

The property
This tasteful little cottage sits on a road between the villages of Dalston and Caldbeck, gateway to the Lake District National Park and the Northern Fells.
The cottage is on the walking route forming part of the Cumbrian Way and is used by keen cyclists following stage two of the Tour of Britain.
Boasting an array of original features, including sandstone floors, exposed stonework and beams, Smithy Cottage offers a character abode for families and friends.
The kitchen has been imaginatively designed and arranged with its sink in an alcove, wooden units and worktops, along with an oil-fired range and an array of appliances to support home-cooking.
Wander through to the spacious lounge, where you can kick back after a long day and chill beside the woodburning stove to discuss where next in Cumbria to explore.
French doors open out onto the pretty cottage garden with steps up to the raised patio seating area affording lovely views of the Pennines.
Relax in the luxury of the beautifully appointed bathroom with a roll-top bath and a large walk-in shower, then up to the first floor where the property has a double and a twin room sleeping up to four people.
The pretty picturesque village of Caldbeck, is an area not to be missed with easy, relaxing walks along the river with its cafes, craft shops and working water mill.
Set just north of the Lake District, be sure to take advantage of this beautiful National Park; head to Keswick where you can explore Keswick Musuem, Puzzling Place, and the Pencil Museum, as well as Hope Park and the Theatre by the Lake which are ideal for warmer evenings.
Venture further south along Ullswater, visit Aira Force Waterfall situated within a picturesque valley or put on your walking shoes and hike to the summit of Place Fell to enjoy remarkable views of the Lake District.
Alternatively, head to the historic city of Carlisle with its Cathedral, Castle and Museum, heading East from Carlisle will take you to Hadrian’s Wall, North you’ll cross the border into Scotland, West will take you to the seaside, North, South, East or West - an abundance of choices are yours!
With all this plus the beauty of the Lake District in striking distance a holiday at Smithy Cottage is sure to be filled with adventure.
About the location
DALSTON
Carlisle 4.6 miles; Keswick 16 miles, Penrith 17.9 miles.
The village of Dalston sits within the Carlisle district of Cumbria, historically part of Cumberland. In the village square lies the red sandstone church of St Michael, dating back to the 13th century, whilst Dalston Hall is a magnificent Grade II listed building full of character and landscape gardens, which is often used as a wedding venue. About two miles south of Dalston is Rose Castle, the palace of the Bishops of Carlisle, which is not open to the public but may be viewed from the road. Carlisle can be reached in four and half miles, a 2000-year-old city with two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and one World Heritage Site, plus lots of pedestrianised shopping areas, award-winning malls, colourful farmer’s markets as well as a traditional Victorian indoor market. Dalston also provides good access to the beautiful North Pennines AONB and the Lake District National Park, making it a great base for outdoor enthusiasts.
