"A lovely cottage with wonderful views of the mountains and hills."
The bed was very comfortable. The cottage was in a great location, with some amazing walks only a short drive away. We can recommend walking up the nearby Sale Fell for some incredible views from the top.

"A comfortable cosy cottage, with a fantastic view across Bassenthwaite Lake."
Well equipped.

"Comfortable stay, will return."

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at squirrel cottage."
The view from the conservatory was second to none. We found it a lovely peaceful accommodation with beautiful walks nearby. Plenty to do for us as we like walking etc. I had a spa afternoon at the Armathwaite Hall hotel which was such a treat and my husband enjoyed golfing at the local golf course. We tended to buy local produce and eat in, we did have a meal in the pheasant which was good value for money and allowed dogs in which was a bonus. Highly recommended and hopefully we will return to squirrel cottage. Ps the parking is tricky next to the accommodation but we parked in the lay-by at the top of the hill and it was fine.
Thank you for your great feedback. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay and look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Property Owner

"Everything about Squirrel Cottage is a total delight."
The beautifully maintained gardens were a pleasure to view, when we could tear our eyes away from the stunning ever changing view! Once inside, everything was extremely well presented and we wanted for nothing. It was a total pleasure being there. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful property with us.
We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Squirrel Cottage and thank you for your lovely comments. Property Owner

"A really lovely cottage with incredible view across the fells and lake."
Spotlessly clean. The immersion heater was noisy in the middle of the night in the main bedroom and the curtains in the twin room very pretty but very thin lining, worth noting if you’re taking children who wake up with the first light! The off road parking spot is small and on a steep slope, something which Sykes ought to state in the listing. We, like others, parked in the layby nearby but this is very potholed and muddy. Other than these points it was great, a lovely area which we know well and a good base for visiting.

"We enjoyed our stay at squirrel cottage the property itself was spotless beds ..."
We enjoyed our stay at squirrel cottage the property itself was spotless beds were comfortable view was stunning the only downsides were parking that was a bit of a mission if you have a large vehicle the pub was a bit far for me as I can't walk very far so we had to get taxis there and back I would not return for those reasons but for anyone who can walk and doesn't mind the tight parking I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this cottage it's a lovely property
We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Squirrel Cottage and would recommend it to others. Property Owner

"Absolutely fantastic stay at Squirrel Cottage."
The location was excellent and the views from the open conservatory were out of this world. Check in went very smoothly and the cottage was very clean and tidy when we got there. Plenty of pots and pans in the kitchen, games and puzzles and a lovely log burner to relax in front of. The enclosed garden was perfect for our dogs to play in. Lots of clean towels available and the beds were very comfortable. The hot water tank was a little noisy in the middle of the night but nothing we couldn’t deal with. The only downside to the stay we feel was the check out time. We think 9am is a little early to have everything packed and the cottage clean and tidy especially with little ones in tow. Overall it was an excellent stay and we will be returning.
Thank you for your feedback. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay and look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Property Owner

"A lovely, well equipped cottage with amazing views from the conservatory."
We were there on a very cold, wet week and the heating was very efficient. The cottage is well placed for getting to lots of popular places in the Lakes. One warning, we arrived in the dark and rain and drove past as the name sign at the top of the drive wasn't obvious against the wall.

"We wish we had booked for longer!"
!! We loved our stay here from start to finish. The cottage itself was so clean and cosy and had everything (and more) that we wanted. The location was perfect for us and our dog with lots of walks right on the doorstep. The view from the conservatory was absolutely amazing!! The garden was very well kept, secure and perfect for our dog. We can’t wait to stay here again and would definitely recommend to anyone! Thank you again, Chloe and Jack.

"Absolutely loved our stay at Squirrel Cottage and already talking about when we can com back!"
The property was spotless and very well equipped, comfortable, and in a great location. Th secure garden was brilliant for our escape artist of a labradoodle! We especially loved the porch with one of the best Lakes views we’ve ever had. Only quirk was the boiler in the main bedroom that periodically whirs throughout the night, but that can’t be helped - just something to be aware of if you are a light sleeper. A perfect stay; thank you so much.
We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Squirrel Cottage. On a clear day the view from the conservatory is almost 30 miles! The electric immersion heater warms the water, ready for the day as there is no boiler in the cottage. We look forward to welcoming you back soon! Property Owner

"A great stay in a fantastic property for our family (2 children and our dog)."
Handy storage outside for bikes - we stored two full size mountain bikes and the hose very useful for cleaning. Very clean and well presented throughout. A great garden space with stunning views. Not a lot in Bassenthwaite itself and a reasonable walk to the village.
We're delighted that you enjoyed your stay. Thank you very much for your lovely feedback. Property Owner

"Another lovely holiday with fantastic views from the garden."
I feel a 9am departure time is too early as you are requested to strip the beds, empty the bins and do half the cleaners work for them before you leave. This together with our own packing and loading of the car on top. It is all a bit of a rush after a nice relaxing holiday.
Thank you for your feedback. We are glad you had a relaxing holiday with us. We will take into account your comments and it may be something we look at changing in the future. We hope to welcome you back soon. The owner relations team - Lakes Cottage Holidays Property Owner

"This was our 8th visit to squirrel cottage, love the cottage and area."
Make over in the bathroom great. Never mentioned this last year as we thought it was a one off, but the person staying in the place attached to squirrels, came into our garden with his dog, and then panicked when he realised we were sitting in the garden. But this morning when we were eating breakfast a young lady came down with her coffee to sit in the garden, we were taken back, my dog was not happy. I asked her, can I help you , she said she understood that this was for them to use. I explained it was not, she was fine and left. Maybe it should be made clear that they a garden view, but no access. Normally when we get back from a day out, we just let our dog off to run down the steps into the garden, the lady and us would have been taken back. Anyway we had a lovely holiday . See you next year Regards. Patricia
We are glad you enjoyed your 8th stay and thank you for already booking your 9th in 2024! There is a sign in our neighbour's house directing their guests"Right" - into their garden. She apologises and will emphasise again to her guests that they are not allowed to come into Squirrel Cottage's garden. Property Owner

"Lovely cottage with fantastic views"

"What a lovely cottage!"
A great location too. I loved coming down in the morning to sit in the conservatory and watch the weather in the valley and over the hills. It was warm and cozy with no need to light the fire. The twin room is small but the master bedroom is fabulous. The kitchen is well equipped with plenty of cupboard space. A short walk to the Sun Inn (also dog friendly). The trick to the drive is to reverse in and onto the parking space, we managed it with a VW camper. There is a washing machine and tumble dryer in the utility 'shed'. Thank you for the chance to stay in this lovely cottage. Only negative is having to leave by 9am.
Thank you for your great feedback! We are very pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Squirrel Cottage. Property Owner

"I think the difficult parking should be better represented in the advertising."
Private off road parking was one of the things that drew me to the Cottage. I was certainly unaware it was on the side of a hill with the need to turn around in a narrow space. As a previous guest had put in the guest book it was not for the faint hearted. Apart from that it was very cosy, and I very much enjoyed the wonderful views.
We are glad you found Squirrel Cottage cosy and enjoyed the wonderful views. The off road parking space can be seen in photo 30. We are sorry you found it difficult. Property Owner

"Squirrel Cottage is a delightfully cosy, compact property, in an extremely beautiful location, with un-beatable dramatic scenery and within minutes of many leisure activities."
A must-visit location for outdoor activities being so close to Bassenthwaite Lake, Dodd Wood, Whinlatter Forest , The Lake District Wildlife Park, Keswick and Derwentwater. Especially great for ramblers of all abilities. Within an hour of Skiddaw and many other peaks and fells.
Thank you for your super feedback. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Squirrel Cottage and the surrounding area. Property Owner

"Have been to this cottage 6 years running now as we love the area and the cottage."
Nice to see that it has had a make over as it did need it. I did mention last year that it needed a new shower door as the water comes underneath, this has not been replaced, maybe that could be done. We will be back next year. Regards Patricia
Thank you for your feedback. We are glad you like the improvements that we have made to Squirrel Cottage so far and look forward to welcoming you back for your 7th visit in 2023! Property Owner

"Cottage lovely, location perfect for us and views amazing."
Saw there had been no welcome pack so made sure we had everything with us but a small tea/coffee and milk to start off would have been a nice touch. Would recommend and would re-visit as it was just right for us and the dogs.
Thank you for your lovely feedback following our recent renovations at Squirrel Cottage. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay and look forward to welcoming you back again in the future. Property Owner

"Parking not easy."
a welcome pack would be a noce jesture eg tea/coffee/milk /biscuits/ fruit. earlier access than 4.00pm especially as vacation is by 9.00 am.
Thanks for your feedback. We apologise for for the supply issue with the welcome pack on this occasion. We hope that it did not spoil the rest of your holiday at Squirrel Cottage with its wonderful lakeland views. Property Owner

"Superb outlook from this comfortable and well-equipped cottage."
Parking is difficult, especially for larger vehicles. There is a lovely garden where children can safely play. Internet access is difficult because the necessary codes are illegible in the instructions. We found it too remote for our liking but I am sure others would love it.

"This cottage has the most stunning views with a lovely garden and conservatory to enjoy them from."
Great location to be based from to enjoy the low fells. Cottage generally comfortable and well equipped. However, Squirrel Cottage/Sykes should request a recycling bin (the cottage advice tells you to put all rubbish in one bin which is just shocking. All the neighbouring cottages have recycling bins so I knocked on the doors and used theirs). Also, bin-bags were not left for rubbish (only laundry) so we could not bag up the laundry as they request you to. A dishwasher would be nice!

"We had a lovely week at Squirrel Cottage."
The cottage is in a beautiful setting with fabulous views. the garden is private but it is overlooked by the house next door. There is a lovely pub 0.5 miles away.

About the location
BASSENTHWAITE
Keswick 8 miles; Cockermouth 9 miles.
An attractive village in the Northern Lakes, Bassenthwaite lies just a short distance to the north east of Bassenthwaite Lake, and retains its traditional rural feel, with a stream flowing gently on the outskirts, whitewashed Lakeland cottages, a pleasant vllage green and a real ale inn full of character! Bassenthwaite Lake itself, while boasting gentler scenery than others in the region, is still one of the most picturesque places in England. Places of interest nearby include Mirehouse, a grand house and gardens on the shores of the Lake with small open-air theatre (reputedly frequented by poets such as Tennyson and Wordsworth), Lake District Wildlife Park, and Dodd Wood. Most of the attractions of the Lake District are within easy reach and the quieter Northern Fells are almost on the doorstep. The nearby towns of Cockermouth and Keswick, both have weekly markets and offer a good range of amenities. The scenery of the Yorkshire Dales is within touring distance, as is the city of Carlisle and Hadrians Wall country.
