  • "Lovely cottage in a stunning location, directly overlooking the seashore and just a few steps from the beach."

The village has a real community feel and the cottage is equipped with everything you could possibly need. We had a very relaxing break with our little dog, who enjoyed the great walks. Only a few minutes drive into Annan for basic shopping and not far from Dumfries for more of a selection. You can explore miles of beautiful coastline, visit some interesting places or simple relax and do nothing except watch the ever-changing view from the sofa. The small kitchen is fine for a couple although if at maximum occupancy (6 people) there's probably not enough comfy seating. That's the only tiny negative about the place!

Glad you enjoyed my cottage. I agree the kitchen is smaller than I would like however is in keeping of the cottage. We do limit the cottage to five to help with this, I have tried to ensure it well equipped and clean which supports the great comments I receive. Hopefully see you again soon Regards Paul Property Owner

  • "Second time staying at this accommodation, first time was wonderful !"

This time however there was major house refurbishment going on next door ! From 8am to 4pm for six days of the seven , there was horrendous noise from machinery, banging , drills , tearing down walls etc ! Not the relaxing holiday as before at all , stressful in fact . The owner of the holiday property must have had planning notice of this , should have informed me and I would have cancelled and gone on another date .

Thank you for your feedback. The building work was paused due to planning coming through. I wasn’t made aware from the builder they had started again as I live 3 hours away. I am really sorry it spoilt you enjoyment of my peaceful cottage. Hopefully you will return again in the future. Property Owner

  • "The cottage is in a beautiful location, with views over the Solway estuary that you never tire of."

The people locally are very friendly and welcoming. The area is unfairly overlooked as a part of Scotland for tourists to explore: we found some fabulous places to visit, including stunning walks (see the Black Loch in Galloway Forest), towns (Kirkcudbright and Castle Douglas) and eateries (don’t miss Gather Laggan) within a 90 minute drive. The cottage has lots of positives: it was very clean, with large lounge and diner, two toilets handy for our family of four, and comfy beds. The kitchen was very small, but useable with the dining area and utility space. Though we would love to see a slimline dishwasher installed. The garden was well maintained and cosy to sit in the evening sunshine, though we would request a dog friendly gate which we think could be easily added. The lovely decor in the cottage was to our taste and it was well equipped with sharp knives (unusual in holiday cottages sadly) and utensils. We very much enjoyed lighting the log burner on our first night. Thank you for a lovely stay in this beautiful part of Scotland

Thank you for your lovely feedback. Hope to see you again very soon Property Owner

  • "The location of Pow-Wow shore cottage is perfect."

The view of the estuary is amazing and ever changing. It is worth using the binoculars provided to watch the shore birds as there are so many. The location is peaceful and I love the lack of street lighting. The on street parking is very plentiful and as we brought 3 cars it was much appreciated. The immediate surrounding buildings are lovely and there is an interesting history to the area. The nearby town of Annan has everything you'll need including a superb bakery and a Tesco superstore. The cottage is great. Although the kitchen is tiny it had everything we needed apart from a teapot. The dining table fitted us all comfortably. We didn't use the washer drier but it was reassuring knowing that it was there and a rotary airer with pegs in the garden. We appreciated the hooks by the backdoor as it enabled us to hang up all our coats and leave outdoor boots to dry. A few tiny changes could really improve visits - tighten the screws on the toilet seat downstairs and for the hot water tap for the downstairs washbasin. Also more plug sockets / extension leads in the front bedrooms as well as bins in bedrooms. Finally, thicker pillows as the ones provided were ridiculously thin.

Thank you for your feedback. It’s much appreciated and allows me to keep the standards high. Really pleased you enjoyed the cottadge. Hopefully see you all again very soon Regards Paul Property Owner

Downstairs cloakroom actually understairs cupboard off the dining room.

Thank you for your feedback. It’s hard to know what to do with the kitchen in a cottage, most people enjoy the small size but appreciate the work surfaces are limited. In terms of the downstairs WC again it’s small, I am 6ft 5inch and it can be squeeze when I use it. When I bought the cottage it was in place and I know we get bookings from people who struggle to go up and down stairs so kept in in place. Thank you for your your feedback. • "Cottage in itself was lovely and the views were amazing, however we received an email the evening before we were due to arrive stating that the cottage next door was being renovated and the noise would be minimal."

At 7.55 on the Monday morning this minimal noise which consisted of reroofing one side of the roof and the removal of internal walls and stairs causing grit and dust coming down the chimney into our holiday home. The work continued everyday until 4/5pm daily and we did in fact leave a day early. I do feel that pow wow cottage shouldnt have been allowed to be let out with such works going on however being told at such short notice it left us no option to sort anything else out or find an alternative. It’s a real shame as the cottage itself is lovely and after a really tough year for our family we were looking forward to a well needed quiet break.

Thank for your feedback and I am sorry it wasnt the restful stay you hoped for. The cottage next door had been empty for many years and sold a while back. I wasn’t aware until the day before that the work on renovating had started and informed Sykes as soon as I new. Unfortunately I cannot control what someone decided to do in there home. It is unfortunate it spoilt your stay and hopefully we will see you again soon. Regards Paul Property Owner

  • "This is a warm and comfortable property with lovely views from the front windows."

The parking space at the back is a bit fiddly to access if your car is slightly bigger than average but it was easy to park at the front either on the grass or the road. The downstairs toilet is better suited to children as it is quite cramped and its easy to bang your head. The hot tap in the kitchen turns the wrong way so you do need to be aware of that. Most plumbers follow a protocol for taps so not sure how this has happened. If you have a dog they will love the beach which is only a few steps from the door. Very close to Dumfries and Galloway and Carlisle and the North lakes. I would be happy to stay here again if we ever wanted to revisit this area.

The cottage's location was perfect with stunning views of the beach and beyond. The cottage was well-furnished, very comfortable and had everything we needed for our stay. The kitchen was well-equipped for preparing and cooking meals. We didn't venture far as we wanted a relaxed week, with daily walks along the beach which we enjoyed with our 18 month old Jack Russell. We will definitely be returning to Powfoot at some point this year and we would definitely rebook Pow-Wow Shore Cottage. Many thanks for the welcome treats too, much enjoyed with a cuppa after a nice walk on the beach.

  • "We so enjoyed our break in the very cosy cottage which was so well equipped for our needs."

It is indeed a seaside haven looking onto the Solway with glorious sunrises, sunsets and amazing rainbows in-between. One tiny glitch was the difficulty opening the front garden gate. We eventually propped this open but everything else was first class..clean,comfortable, a lovely garden space to sit and watch the birds and butterflies, the views and walks on the beach. We highly recommend a visit to WWF Caerlaverock. Our Place in Annan and The Globe in Dumfries are very good places to eat. The Solway gin shop for different gins, liquers and chocolate is worth a visit.

Glad you enjoyed your stay. The gate is the original iron one from the early 1900s and does need a push sometimes to open it. I am reluctant to replace as it matches all the others in the row. I will take another look to see what else I can do to make it a little easier to open. I appreciate your feedback, hopefully we will see you again in the future Regards Paul Property Owner

Aside from fantastic local walks, we found Powfoot a great base for visits to both Annan and Dumfries for shopping, and to Threave and Caerlaverock for birdwatching. Sunday lunch at the Powfoot Hotel and weekday lunches at The Boathouse (Glencaple) and Our Place (Annan) went down very well. We certainly hope to make further visits in future.

However downstairs the mat needed a good hoover and the surfaces were dusty. I cleaned the surfaces myself with a cloth and polish which was left out, which I didn’t mind. The only bugbear we had was that the iron was totally unusable - full of dirty water and the bottom of it was badly burnt which would have transferred onto our clothes and I had forgotten the travel iron!

I appreciate the feedback, it is a small kitchen but with the use of the utility we have tried to utilise everything to make more space.. The wood burner in the lounge was much appreciated in the evening after several walks during the day on the beach. We didn’t have occasion to use the wood-burning stove - but it was good to know it was there! The little house was very comfortable, the views were fabulous (as were the night skies) and the local visitor attractions were varied and welcoming, from the Distillery to the museums, the shops and eating establishments. It was a real treat to have the beach virtually outside the door - and quality hard flooring made it easy to sweep up any sandy debris very easily. The gardens (front and back) were gorgeous and full of plants that attracted bees and butterflies. It was lovely to sit outside with morning coffee or an evening night drink and simply watch and listen. The sloping ceilings in the bedrooms were an issue for a 6’4” husband, but we coped. A very minor point - some of the photos are a little out of date and do not do the gardens justice; they also show the old dining room set up; there is now an additional chair in the sitting room. We’d be very happy to visit again!

About the location

ANNAN

Dumfries 15.7 miles; Carlisle 20 miles

The town of Annan, a former harbour, lies on the banks of the River Annan, in East Dumfries and Galloway, and is steeped in history, with the area once the site of Roman camps and the workplace of the writer Thomas Carlyle. Each year, the town celebrates the Riding of the Marches, in honour of the Royal Charter bestowed by King James V, which involves parades, massed pipe bands and competitions. The area around Annan has many small towns, picture postcard villages and hamlets, plus beautiful unspoilt coastline, with sandy beaches and hidden coves. Visit nearby Caerlaverock Castle, one of Scotland's finest ruined castles or Annandale Distillery. Take a day trip and marvel at the majestic architecture of the grand abbeys of Melrose and Jedburgh or visit the northern Lake District and the historic Hadrian’s Wall.
