  • "A delightful cosy, clean, very comfortable cottage in great surroundings."

A good base for exploring by foot or further a field by car. Although there is no Wi-Fi at the cottage there is some EE coverage if you need to download maps or keep in touch.

  • "Sad to be home after a fabulous stay at Swinside!"

A lovely little cottage perfect for a couple or solo traveller, clean and fully equipped with everything you could need - including a grapefruit spoon! Didn’t know what one was, had to google it! Incredibly comfy bed, and quality bedlinen too. It’s in the perfect location for exploring straight from the door, and Keswick is just a short distance away for any amenities. We had 2 excellent evening meals at the newly opened Swinside Inn, which is just a short walk away. I must admit when I first drove in my heart sank at how busy the campsites were just down the road, but miraculously the cottage is very quiet and peaceful, as is the area surrounding it. There was also a constant stream of birds on the feeder in next doors back garden, which were lovely to see. Having stayed in many cottages over the years, I would say this has been one of my favourites and I’d definitely look at booking here again for the future.

We feels very at home in the cottage and love all the walking and have already booked our next stay. We would appreciate some new saucepans though. I’m not sure the copper bottom ones work well for an electric hob - they take ages to heat up.

  • "We would like to point out that the small village hall directly opposite was systematically demolished during the complete week of our stay, culminating in the concrete being totally crushed on Friday 14th."

DID you not know this was going to be done, if not, perhaps you should continually review your portfolio, as all the locals new it was going to happen. (However, this did not impact our stay as we were out most of the days) Works commenced at between 8 - 8:30 each morning, except on Sunday. There was NO spare toilet rolls left, which meant we had to purchase some. The SWINSIDE INN is closed and according to all the neighbours we spoke to, this is NOT going to be opened as a pub in the near future, but as a shooting lodge for the Lingholme estate. (We feel your information should remove the fact that the Swinside inn is just but a mere 1/2 mile walk up the lane. Last year we would agree with that statement, as many an evening we visited it. We did enjoy our stay and will almost certainly visit again.

We are sorry to hear your holiday was impacted with the demolition of the village hall, sadly this was totally out of our control. We had been told by a neighbour that this would happen the beginning of June, as you can testify it didn't but the week following. We have instructed Lakelovers to send you 10% compensation of which I hope you will find acceptable. I am very surprised no spare toilet rolls were there as there should be at least 2 spare left on the cistern. Spares are kept under the stairs for future reference. Thank you for informing us about the Swinside Inn, we are happy to tell you that the Inn is open and was very popular on Saturday when I visited. It is within walking distance of Swinside Cottage and has been recently refurbished. Property Owner

We found the instructions but the actual control was o the floor and very difficult to read. The toilet seat was very loose. it kept on coming away and the lid would shut as you were sitting on the toilet.

I'm sorry to hear you had difficulties operating the towel rail. The toilet seat has now been fixed. We are happy to say that we are having a new bathroom fitted in October, this will have a simple towel radiator. Property Owner

  • "Lovely holiday."

First time we had stayed in this cottage and will come back again because it's a lovely cottage and well located for walking straight out of the door. There are more walks than you can do in a week, both low and high level routes. Cottage very clean and nice and warm, cake and milk on arrival a nice touch. Modern kitchen and generally well equipped, but as other users have commented the lack of an extractor fan over the hob can set the smoke alarm off. We weren't troubled by the small crack in the bath panel (noted by previous residents), but it could be sharp if you caught your leg on it. Local pub Swinside Inn looks shut long term, so bring your own supplies.

Not sure what earlier guest meant by “20 commuters an hour” ? I have stayed there several times at different times of year and no such problem! Visitors yes, and the activity centre generates some activity but nothing to spoil the pleasure of being there. Microwave dishes a big help. Cake a definite plus so thank you! Happy Christmas.

  • "Overlooked at rear, by other property, not mentioned in advertising material."

Very noisy in morning and evening when people going to and from work, 20 cars per hour, average Bed very comfortable and storage good, and furnishings very good. Bathroom adequate, but workmanship poor. Not recommend to seal bath to wall with adhesive, it's normal to use a non setting compound. I slipped and grabbed at the right hand side of bath to break my fall, it gave way, split the side panel, and in consequence tiles glued to bath came away. Cobwebs in bathroom and behind some furniture. Kitchen cramped, no cooker hood, so when we had a fry up the fire alarm went off. Front path non-compliant; risers must be same height, and treads (the going), must be same dimension front to back. Sound of brook and bird song fantastic, when they could be heard. Swinside pub very, very disappointing. The Pheasant Inn opposite Bassenthwaite Lake was excellent We had a good week, went on the Ratty, had good time on the Gondola and Tweedies in Grasmere is a good place to stop for a relaxed drink. Views from Swinside front to back spectacular but spoil by activity center to the rear and waste bins to the front.

Excellent location for walking; we hardly used a car all week. Bird feeders in the garden next door attracted flocks of birds which were great to watch (though a bit traumatic when a sparrowhawk was hunting them). Lack of WiFi might be a blessing to some visitors, but it would have been useful, as the mobile signal was also very weak.

Lovely new bed, quality bed linen and, as always, beautifully clean. Well equipped although some plastic microwaveable bowls with lids would be useful as plates have silver rim. Saves always using oven and hob which is pricey for the owner as all electric. Lovely week at swinside, despite some disappointing weather, and will be booking again. Lovely cake nice touch! • "Swinside cottage is lovely!"

It's kept really well and is very comfortable, the location is fab for walking and Keswick and is really beautiful. It's our third stay here and I'd love to visit again. The only downside is no wifi and terrible phone signal which is annoying for weather checks for walking etc as well as evening entertainment. The private outside area has also deteriorated since our first stay - it was full of weeds and the furniture is getting grubby. Pretty easy to sort that out though.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We will be replacing outside furniture in the new year 2023 also sorting any weeds and the gravel area. We are also looking into having WIFI installed early 2023. Property Owner

It felt like a home from home. The only additions we would have appreciated would have been a measuring jug or some food scales and access to wi-fi but we knew the latter wasn’t available when we booked. The property was spotlessly clean and in a perfect location for walking out from. We would happily return if holidaying in that part of the Lake District again.

Very comfortable and warm. Tea bread lovely! Personally I like all china matching exactly but that’s a fad! Not having WiFi is a mixed blessing as makes it a more peaceful week but also meant no freeview which would occasionally have been useful. Still I was able to pop into Keswick for a coffee and check emails when needed. Will happily go again and looking forward to return in July. A big thank you to the owners and the housekeeping team.

However, we had two issues that would make it unlikely we would book this cottage again and book one of the others in the same terrace. The only comfortable chair is a small settee which we didn't find that comfortable. Most properties now, even for two people, have ample comfy chairs. After a hard day's walking, one needs comfort, not to be cramped on a settee. Major issue for us was lack of internet which we missed on the details. We need access to internet for my partner's work (he is self-employed). We also wanted to stream some TV as the main channels are hopeless. For these reasons we would not stay again. However, for some people the lack of internet and mobile phone signal (not the fault of the cottage owners I hasten to add) would be bliss!

There was no hairdryer and when I rang Heart of the Lakes I was put through to Sykes cottages who weren't very helpful. Also no teabags, a cracked drinking glass, only 1 bowl...i was told its self catering which I understand obviously, but every cottage I've stayed in has always had the basics for when you first get there. However we had a lovely holiday, loved the log burner (even in August), and the big bath was great after a long day walking.

  • "Mattress still needs replacing as dippiness affects sleep."

Have mentioned this before. On arrival place was full of flies, all windows shut and no fly spray. The evening was impacted by flies landing on us, our hair, arms and on our food while we tried to eat, the dog tearing about as constantly being bothered by them. Still a problem in the morning despite our leaving windows open and all lights off the previous evening to coax them out. I understand that the weather is responsible but the cleaning team must have known and could at the very least have left an apology and some fly spray. Would only have taken seconds and would be good practice. Otherwise cottage as expected, very clean and lovely new bedding. Comfy sofa and lovely scenery to gaze at after a long walk. Fifth visit there and overall really enjoyable. I would love to come back yet again but not happy with takeover by Sykes who retain customers bank card details which although legal is not liked or encouraged by the holiday industry itself. Heart of the Lakes themselves always helpful.
