  • "Lovely quiet setting and easy to find in the dark."

We visited with 2 dogs and despite heavy rain, walking them in the grounds of the property, the lanes and local footpaths was hassle free with the dog shower outside the property and having a door straight into the kitchen as well as the hallway. (We brought our own dirt catcher mats for inside the doors) property is beautifully maintained, very clean, comfortable and modern. Definitely book again!

If your looking for quite then this is your place, love the quirky up side down layout as it’s an old mews. This is our second time staying here my wife and I with our cocker spaniel, last time in Mews 2 just after covid lock down. The owners can’t do enough for you should you need them and they left us a lovely gift for being repeat visitor’s. We will definitely be back again in the future.

We’ve came back several times and expect we will continue to do so. Property provides a quiet, peaceful retreat from the crowds and the ambience of the working farm next door adds to that. Lots of things to see and do in the local area - especially walks which are in abundance.

As the owners allow dogs I would suggest adding a child gate/dog guard at the top of the stairs to stop the dogs going downstairs. We had to use the clothes airer. Apart from that the accommodation was great. Thanks James

  • "It’s a shame to score so low as our family did really admire the property and it’s surrounding gardens."

I did find the owner very welcoming too and friendly when we spoke briefly over the telephone. I have rated low and therefore wouldn’t recommend as the bed was terribly uncomfortable. Both my partner and I complained our whole stay at how hard the bed and mattress were: I don’t think I’ve ever slept on anything like it. When we originally got there we were making plans to come back but I just couldn’t possibly because the bed was so awful.

Dear Sherelle, Thank you for your review & feedback. I’m so sorry to hear you & your partner both found the bed mattress too hard & uncomfortable, it clearly spoilt your stay which is completely contrary to our wishes for any of our guests. I fully appreciate the selection & choice of a bed mattress is a very personal thing but just to clarify the mattresses we use in all 4 of our cottages are Hotel Howden, to a commercial standard & have hopefully provided a comfortable nights sleep for the majority of our guests. We do attract repeat custom which I would like to think supports this. Best regards Mark Property Owner

  • "The barn conversion was lovely and definitely of a high standard."

Some very minor issues - the microwave oven didn't work, although it appeared to and one of the few serving dishes had been put away on a top shelf, probably so that it wouldn't be spotted or checked. It had large cracks in it, making it unsafe to use. Also, both sofas had throws, hiding large cracks in the leather, maybe caused by animals. Otherwise the property was a great holiday home. We'd love to visit again.

Dear Mrs Pringle, thank you for lovely comments & observations also. I do apologise for any inconvenience not having a working microwave. I would have acted immediately had I known during your stay & did replace it straight away on your departure when it came to light. I do hope we see you again sometime in the future, best regards Mark Property Owner

  • "We absolutely loved our stay at Abbotts Reading, the properties are all fabulous and ours inside was perfect for what we needed."

A lovely wooded area for the dog to wander and an added extra of a small dog run was amazing due to our dog not being very good with recall so needs to be on a lead when out. The farmhouse next door has fresh free range eggs which I have to say are superb especially as they are still warm when you get them! Positioning is so close to so many places to visit, the National Trust included which are a must in Cumbria! Although this time of year, a few coffee shops are not open, which means you need to make the most of the local pubs of course - and they are all walkable! I would not hesitate in coming back here, Mark was regularly in touch and onsite so any issues would (I'm sure) have been addressed immediately! See you again soon I'm sure.

The dogs too really appreciated the enclosed run and the woody walk. Indeed there were fabulous walks in forests, around lakes and along footpaths - and all close-by via short to medium trips in the car. Lovely villages with pubs and very good takeaways (just up the road) added to our very enjoyable holiday and everywhere (pubs and shops) are very dog-friendly.

Very good for furry friends, especially having the dog run. Would of been nice to have more of the basic essentials such as salt and pepper, cooking oil, foil and more than two rolls of toilet paper for four people for a week!! Toiletries would be a nice touch. We have stayed in other sykes cottages that had a welcome box of bread, milk etc, which was also nice. Double bed mattress was very hard.

About the location

LAKESIDE

Newby Bridge 1.2 miles; Bowness-on-Windermere 8.7 miles.

Set on the southern shores of Lake Windermere, the small, sleepy hamlet of Lakeside offers a peaceful getaway location, hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the Lake District’s popular attractions, but still within easy reach of them. Whether you decide to discover the area in the car, by foot, bike, boat or steam, there’s plenty to see nearby to keep the whole family content. The ferry dock offers the chance to travel by boat to Waterhead or Bowness, or take a shorter trip to the National Trust’s Fell Foot Park, across the water, which offers pretty grounds set alongside the very tip of the lake, providing plenty of places for picnics, paddling, games and gentle strolls on sunny afternoons. Situated alongside the Lakeside Station is the long-standing Lakeside and Haverwaithe Railway, home to Britain’s oldest standard gauge steam engine, on which you can travel back in time along this well-loved Heritage line, and where little ones will delight in meeting Thomas and his friends. Visit the Lakes Aquarium to uncover the often-secretive world of life below water, where you’ll chance upon hundreds of captivating creatures that feature in the surrounding rivers, lakes and sea. There are wonderful, well-signed walks to be enjoyed in the immediate area, including the 5-mile route to Finsthwaite’s High Dam, which trails from Lakeside through pleasant woodlands and meadows. Lakeside offers an exclusive holiday location with all of the Lake District’s delights at your fingertips.
