  • "We three ladies had a wonderful time staying at Cross View Cottage."

The cottage was clean, comfortable, warm and perfect for our stay. The beds were extremely comfortable and we slept better than we have in ages. It is definitely not suitable for anyone with mobility issues but we found it really quaint. Alston has everything you might need on your doorstep. We visited the church, almost next door, the CoOp, handy for supplies, the takeaway, for delicious pizzas and fish and chips and most other shops for souvenirs and just to chat to the local people who were extremely friendly. The journey to Alston from Penrith took us across stunning moors to a height of nearly 2000 feet but what a view from the top!!! We caught the train from Penrith to Edinburgh, just an hour and a half away, and did the tour of the city on an open top bus, we also visited the Lake District and Barnard Castle, all definitely worth the trip. Finally, the best meals we had whilst in Alston were in the Cumberland Arms. The pub was not much to look at but the chef is a genius. If you enjoy walking, stay at Cross View cottage, you won’t regret it.

Dear A, M & N, we are thrilled to read your review articulating some of the delightful activities and places to visit in and around Alston. Thank you for the complements on the property, beds and the central location. Alston is a welcoming town, its people very friendly. For its size, it offers a variety of food and beverage options along with super markets, whole food, petrol stations, gift shops, antiques, post office, ATMs and of course so many walking options. We are extremely happy to note that you had a wonderful stay overall and you definitely did a lot in the week. Sorry to hear that you missed a ride on the most amazing South Tynedale Railway. Hopefully you will visit again soon. Thank you for being a delightful guests. Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely holiday at your accomadation in Alston."

It was nice clean and cosy. The cottage was also very centrally located and there was lots of walks and biking for our older children . In fact they did the coast to coast bike ride and slept over at us half way through. Everything was nice and comfortable with nice bedrooms and bathrooms. We would come again. Dassi

Dear DK (and family), Thank you for this superb review. We are very delighted to note that your older children stayed over during their coast-to-coast ride and as a family you enjoyed some of what the area has to offer. We are so very happy to note that you enjoyed the cottage itself along with its location and all amenities at your doorstep. We look forward to welcoming you again. • "Perfect for a 3 night break over Easter but would happily have spent longer."

Booked for family of 5 with teens aged 19, 17 and 17. Accommodation absolutely beautiful, location fantastic (front door opens on to market square) and facilities brilliant (kitchen very well stocked, shower lovely), also hosts very responsive to any queries that we had. Accommodation over 4 floors which we loved accessible via short spiral staircases in between. If you have issues with stairs or have infants or toddlers that you are cautious about then be aware. No designated parking as described but we had no issues finding spaces right outside. Alston centre is picturesque and sunset from the high Street was stunning! Co-op 25m away handy for forgotten items as was Spar at bottom of the hill. Would highly recommend and keen to return.

Dear Dr. P, thank you all for choosing Cross View Cottage. We are grateful and thrilled to read your comment highlighting the top features of our Cottage and its perfect location. We are also delighted that you enjoyed the stay in our cottage and around Alston during Easter. Thank you for your kind words and being great guests. We look forward to welcoming you all again in the near future. Best wishes! Property Owner

  • "We loved this property, it is beautifully presented, well equipped, very comfortable, beautifully clean and ideally situated, we really enjoyed our stay."

We would have liked to give this property a 5 star rating but there are a couple of things that have prevented that. The main one is the stairs. The listing does give a warning about the stairs and I would fully support that but I question whether it goes far enough. The stairs are indeed very steep and I would have thought a hand rail should have been provided, the absence of such meant that descending the stairs was a scary experience and one we only got used to by the time we were leaving. I find it hard to believe this past any safety inspection, if the handrail was sorted we would have no problem giving this property a 5 star and recommending it. The other issues were minor and didnt really bother us and didnt impact our star rating. The most note worthy of other issues was that the public parking in the town square while free is chaotic and you could at times find yourself parking some distance from the property, this was the last week in September I dread to think what it is like in high season, probably to be expected in a busy town centre.

Dear John, Thank you for taking the time to review our cottage in detail. We are delighted that you found our cottage beautiful, comfortable, and spotlessly clean. Thank you for also reiterating its ideal location. The cottage is historic in nature (300+ years old listed building) and while the exterior including doors and windows, is maintained to its original standard, the interior was completely renovated to the latest regulations not too long ago. When carrying out these renovations, we tried to retain most of the delightful original features but had the difficult task of deciding how far to go without losing the character of the cottage. Most guests enjoy these original features including the character staircase but we do understand that some guests may find the staircase challenging. Therefore, we are looking for a handrail that fits the character of the house. Regarding parking, on rare occasions (such as an event or during peak hours for pubs and restaurants) the town can get busy, but parking is quite easily available within 2-5 minutes’ walk even during such times. This remains the same in the summer and winter months, so please do not let worry about parking deter you from returning to enjoy Alston in the summer. Thank you once again for choosing Cross View Cottage and we do hope to host you again in the not-too-distant future. Property Owner

Right in the middle of town with all amenities right there. The cottage on first impressions was, wow, and this didn’t disappoint. We loved the quirkiness of a room per floor. The kitchen was well equipped and the lounge so warm and cozy. We will be booking again when we return to the town.

Thank you for this wonderful review and we are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Cross View Cottage, in particular the cottage itself and its location with all amenities at your door step. • "We had a fantastic week at Cross View Cottage, it’s a charming place that feels extremely comfortable and a home from home."

The owners have really made it feel welcoming and the location within Alston couldn’t be better. You have everything you need on your doorstep - literally! From great pubs to Jacks lovely little takeaway across the road we enjoyed everything about this beautiful place. The walks you can have from the cottage are amazing but you have so many other places to visit that a week doesn’t feel like long enough. Thank you Shanti and John, I know this is a new venture but you are doing great and we wish you all the best. If you are reading this as your thinking of booking think no more, it’s a no brainier!

Thank you so much for this very positive review. We are delighted that you both enjoyed your week at our cottage as well as in and around Alston. It was a pleasure interacting with you before and during your stay and being able to provide you with suggestions for some brilliant walks in the area. Thank you for letting us know you enjoyed these walks along with the South Tynedale Railway & Jack's take away which were some of the highlights of your stay. We look forward to your return! • "We stayed at Cross View Cottage in early September and thoroughly enjoyed our stay."

The property, originally the village butcher shop, has been thoughtfully and sympathetically restored by the current owners and offers a cosy base from which to explore the fabulous surrounding countryside. The mix of modern amenities with some delightful items of antique furniture is just right and in this compact house gives an uncluttered and spacious feel. The house, (excluding the cellar which houses the washer dryer and all the cleaning equipment needed) is on four floors with the two bedrooms (v comfortable beds!) and new bathrooms on the top two floors. The ground floor "living"/dining/kitchen area is better equipped than most self-catering cottages and the next floor up is the cosy sitting room, complete with wood-burner, which was just lovely on the chill September evenings. A 'different' (you will be fit after a week of four floor living!), but welcoming cottage in the heart of Alston. Strongly recommend this beautifully kept and sparkling clean property for a holiday.

Thank you for this great review and we are delighted that you enjoyed Cross View Cottage and everything that Alston has to offer. We look forward to welcoming you again, as Alston is also a great base for exploring some of Lake District . Thank you once again for choosing Cross View Cottage, Property Owner

  • "We all thoroughly enjoyed our four nights stay at Cross View Cottage, (two adults and two teenagers)."

We arrived in the village slightly earlier to park up (we always managed to find a parking space during our stay) and to look round Alston. The cottage is in a prominent position so it was easy to spot as we drove in and we couldn't wait to get inside and unpack. Collecting the key with the key code was easy. Once inside the cottage it was as good as the photos, beautifully presented and spotlessly clean. We loved all the original features, including the spiral stair cases. And having two bathrooms was definitely a plus! Even though we didn't really need to use it, we still lit the log burner in the living room on an evening. As it was a novelty, not having a real fire at home. Plenty of kindling and matches were provided, we just needed one bag of logs from the local Spar. A fruit/veg/plant stall appeared twice in the week under the Market Cross right outside the cottage, which we used. There are ample of shops for groceries etc in Alston so you don't need to bring lots of food with you! We even had one meal from The High Plaice Chippy close to the cottage, after completing the tree top challenge at Go Ape in Matfen, which went down well. We loved having this cottage as a base to visit places near by such as Penrith, Long Meg, Hadrians Wall and the High Force waterfall. We have since recommended Cross View Cottage to our family and friends. Thank you Shanthi and John for such a lovely stay in your cottage, it's a gem and we came home feeling truly revitalised.

We are delighted that you enjoyed the stay in our home and thank you very much for this amazing review and for recommending Cross View Cottage to your family & friends. We look forward to welcoming your family again as well as your friends, and relatives in the near future. Property Owner

About the location

ALSTON

Melmerby 8 miles; Penrith 18 miles; Stanhope 20 miles; Hexham 23 miles; Carlisle 29 miles; Barnard Castle 30 miles.

Alston is set in the North Pennines in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by a unique landscape of moorland, hills, rivers and waterfalls, and is England's highest market town. This intriguing town, with its cobbled streets and fascinating nooks and crannies, was the location for ITV's productions of Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist. Alston and the North Pennines have long inspired artists and writers; the poet and writer W H Auden loved the area and today Alston is an inspiration to the craftspeople who live and work there. There is a host of unusual shops in the town including quality crafts and galleries. Take a ride on one of the lovingly-restored steam and diesel engines through the beautiful scenery of the South Tyne valley on the South Tynedale Railway which runs from Alston through to Slaggyford. The River Tyne is also noted as one of the finest salmon rivers in England and day-ticket fishing is available locally. The North Pennines used to be one of the wealthiest lead mining centres in Europe, and the Killhope Lead Mining Museum offers a great family day out with interactive exhibitions. With the drive along the A686 recognised by the AA as one of the world's best drives, and northern Cumbria, County Durham and Northumberland, all within easy reach, this makes a superb base.
