  • "A fantastic base for exploring the Lakes, and for all the walking around Ambleside."

Ambleside is a lovely place to stay, with a real walkers buzz about the place. Lots of walking/outdoor activity related shops, then gift shops, cafe's, mini supermarkets, and takeaway places. Multiple pubs to choose from too. The house was comfortable, and suited us well. The separate utility room was really useful for laundry and all the wet weather gear. Plenty of space for us. The outside space is small, but is fully enclosed for dogs. You can sit outside on a table and chairs, but it's cosy, and doesn't get much sun. The kitchen is quite small, limited surface space for preparing food, but there is a large dinning table in the open plan dinning room joining the kitchen so that can be used. I'd say the kitchen is adequate for preparing simple meals, but not a 3 course dinner with lots of plates and pans! Parking is free with a provided disc. But we forgot to put the disk on for just 30 mins and got a ticket, so beware! Beds comfy, linens all clean and fresh and place felt clean. Plenty of TVs if that's your thing! The ensuite shower room - the shower is a bit aged, could do with a new shower tray at some point so it looks fresh. I think the place is managed by a central agency, so there wasn't that personal touch of a pint of milk, biscuits/cake on arrival, fresh flowers, that some other places have. If I was coming back to Ambleside I'd stay again. It's a brilliant central location for Ambleside, so you can walk to shops, restaurants and pubs etc in less than 2 mins. Thanks for our stay.

  • "Great location with plenty of walks, cafes, bakeries and pubs nearby."

The house was well kitted out and very comfortable for a family of four adults plus one small dog. Would have preferred a double bed in the smaller bedroom but we knew it was a single so can’t complain!

  • "Lovely house in a great location - central but very quiet."

Bedrooms were so spacious and comfortable, both bathrooms were lovely. Lounge was also comfy, and kitchen well-equipped. Whole house was lovely and clean and welcoming. Very handy location for buying fresh pastries in the morning, and for the beautiful park for dog walks. Thanks for a great stay!

  • "Large house with plenty of room."

Garden was nice to sit in as weather was lovely, it also was dog proof. Both showers were disappointing as the water would often go to a trickle or completely stop whilst using them. There is really only seating for 4 people comfortably in lounge, if 5 were staying it would be a squash on the settees. Would recommend this house as in an excellent position and we would return.

Great location with everything in walking distance, parking space was really useful and the cottage was exactly as described. I would definitely recommend for those looking for a comfy, home from home house.

  • "Having stayed in Fernleigh on several occasions previously we knew what to expect and weren’t disappointed."

Excellent facilities and such a cozy ‘home’. Apart from the ideal location the other big positives for us are the parking with the property and the fact it’s dog friendly. We all had a thoroughly good stay and will be returning.

  • "We had a lovely week."

The cottage is in a great location and parking outside the property is a bonus. The cottage is warm and spacious. It is a little dated in places. There is plenty of hot water and the bath is lovely. The showers lacked a bit of water pressure. Would stay here again due to the great location.

  • "The glasses provided were very delicate."

Two were chipped when we got there and one broke in my son's hand. I really don't want to be washing up on holiday, thicker glasses (even cheap IKEA ones) would have been safer and easier to go in the dishwasher.

  • "The cottage had a terrible smell in the lounge which got worse when the window in the lounge was closed."

Although we had a dog with us the lounge made all our party feel really itchy and especially if we sat on the sofas. The carpet in the lounge was covered in dog hair as my socks were covered in hair. Carpet not tbest in a house suitable for 2 dogs. Very small kitchen, not the best accessories available either and not full sets of crockery. The gate to the bottom of the stairs was a very unusual feature!! There’s no photos of this on the listing, I wonder why?? The gate has a polite notice that dogs are not allowed upstairs. I don’t think this a necessary feature. Large bedrooms, fitted wardrobes has basic shelving inside there was an extension to the top of the dressing table? En-suite in main bedroom, the shower was grubby. The house was dated, decorated very basic, which wouldn’t be a problem if it was clean. There was no way we could have spent any quality time in the house, especially the lounge as mentioned above. We stayed at the property for one night and then came home on the Sunday. None of my family wanted to stay there. We have used the company for many years and this is the worst property we have stayed in. It wasn’t cheap, and I will not allow my family to stay in sub standard properly when you don’t feel comfortable with the surroundings. I did ring heart of the lakes to advise that we had left the property after one night and was told to make a complaint, no information was taken from me. I do not recommend this property at all and the owner needs to spend money to upgrade as there are far better properties in the same street which put it to shame.

This is by far the worst report we have received in 20 years and we do not accept the contents. They are mischievous. If the property was in such a poor condition upon their arrival why did't they immediately complain to the agents? Why didn't they contact us, the owners? Why did they wait until after they left to raise their complaint? Clearly the issues could not be substantiated and would not bear scrutiny. We suggest the visitors had good reason the depart early but they were not based upon any property related issue. The cleaners are provided by Lakelovers and are well respected. They have been commended. The Vrbo visitors arriving 29/07/23 say'' The house had everything we needed . We would definitely return'' The Airbnb visitors arriving 02/09/23 say ''The property was clean and tidy. I would recommend the cottage to anyone. It was perfect for our stay. We had no issues. Bathrooms were 'squeeky clean'' Those leaving 16/09/23 commented upon the delicate glasses which will be replaced asap. None of these visitors mention smells, poor state of cleanliness or condition of the property. You can verify the Vrbo and Airbnb on the appropriate platforms. • "Location is everything with this cottage, very centrally located in Ambleside."

The accommodation is comfortable and is of a good 3 star standard however, there are a few minor niggles. Cutlery and glasses are very limited. Two teaspoons is not really adequate neither were the very limited number of tumblers plus only four mugs were supplied and two of these had chips. The cleanliness of the property could also have been better especially considering that there should be more thorough cleaning due to Covid are the moment. It looked good at surface level however when plugging chargers in at the back of the bedside tables you could see that this was full of dust which had accumulated over more than a week or two. Similarly with the main bathroom, the surface levels were clean however there was lots of dust on top on the shower head. This also would have built up over time rather than just being missed once.

Thank you for your feedback, we are glad you enjoyed your break. We are due to do some work in the next month, so we will address the issues you have noted. Property Owner

  • "We had a very enjoyable week."

..Fernleigh cottage was warm & clean with very comfy beds. There were all the facilities that we needed! Millans park is a great spot for Ambleside centre with the main park just 5 minutes away. We all really enjoyed it. Gardens need some TLC but we are gardeners. Unfortunately, there was a dog left in the end cottage next door that barked & howled throughout the day, which was quite upsetting to hear because we take our dog everywhere. I understand this has nothing to do with Fernleigh cottage, but should be addressed for future guests if it continues. Thanks again.

  • "The description of the rear garden was most misleading."

It was quite overgrown and we certainly would not wish to sit on the patio - as featured in the description of the cottage. This was most misleading. The tiles in the en-suite shower were showing black mould and although there was an ample supply of hot water, one wanted to vacate the shower as quickly as possible. The lounge and dining room were looking quite faded. Dining chairs were soiled. The sofas in the lounge were comfortable. There was a very strong smell of animal urine in the porch area.

  • "Lovely house, clean and in a good location."

However, our booking clearly stated 10am check out. When we saw a sign in the house saying 9am check out, we thought this was a mistake. The cleaner was waiting at 9am. This should be made clear on the booking to reflect this, as we felt rushed out. The master bedroom curtains do not cover the windows or have a black out lining, and let the sun in from early in the morning. The rear gate is not small dog friendly; it would be good if a wire mesh could be added as our dog managed to escape.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
