  • "We had a wonderful holiday in Ambleside and Gale Mews, the property we rented, was outstanding and very worthy of 5 stars."

The house is in a wonderful location, a walk of only a few minutes from the centre of Ambleside, but on a very quiet street and with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. While it is an uphillI walk from the town centre, it really is a very short walk. The house has a wonderful, modern open-plan kitchen and dining room, a lovely sitting room and, upstairs, 3 very comfortable bedrooms and 2 bath/shower rooms, as well as a toilet downstairs at the main entrance. Most of our walks started from the front door but there was also lots of walks a short drive from the house. We had a wonderful holiday there and would highly recommend Gale Mews.

The situation is outstanding the facilities and cleanliness first class and the location in Ambleside ideal. We have scored down a little on accuracy of listing (above) because the pictures do not give it full credit. Our only small improvement would be to have better outside lighting for access on foot in darkness.

The only downside was the car parking space is not very suitable for a large family estate car which wasn’t clear on the listing. This wouldn’t stop us staying at the property again though.

The cottage was very spacious and clean and lovely views from the property overlooking Ambleside and the surrounding hills. It was just a short walk to shops in Ambleside and also to waterside where you can take a ferry down lake Windermere. We would definitely like to stay again in the future.

  • "The property was wonderful, even better than expected from the website descriptions etc."

Hence the awarded marks above. However, We did experience one problem in that we could not find any cutlery of any sort and we could not contact anybody from Sykes or your agents in Ambleside until Monday. When we did manage to speak to your agent, monday morning, they explained there was a hidden inner drawer that contained every bit of cutlery that we could wish for. Now! all four adults in the party searched the kitchen for the cutlery a number of times, over the first two days, without locating the hidden drawer. Perhaps brighter clearer identification markers would have helped?

Usually the pictures are misleading but not on this property. Excellent proximity to pubs and hiking just right from your door. We did 2 Sykes cottages for a week each, first in the Cotswolds and then here. Wish we had stayed for 2 weeks here instead!! Semi serious question, is this home for sale? We are close to retirement and could be interested.

  • "Our second stay, lovely property in beautiful Ambleside but very disappointed that over a year on two issues still remain - the fire has still not been repaired and toilet flush in main bathroom remains problematic."

Didn't even report as numerous references in the visitor book and other reviews with responses such as 'waiting for replacement part'. For the price, now £1500+ for peak weak would expect features to be in working order (or at least acknowledged as an ongoing issue when advertised or through email contact prior to arrival). Bed in main bedroom like sleeping on a brick with cheap duvet and pillows, no cushions on sofas - living room lacks comfort after long day waking, especially if it's been wet. Generally a lovely property, but others around with log burners or working gas fires would be our preference in future for the price. Heating system effective though and it is a lovely property in a good spot. Arriving to other people's walking boots in the porch doesn't make it feel like home for a week, but these could have been left from the last guests rather than there permanently.

We were very disappointed as the owners to read your feedback. We were of the opinion that the issue with the gas fire had been resolved and have contacted the maintenance dept in advance of reading their response above. I am sure they will rectify both of the problems you have noted without delay. The mattress in the main bedroom is firm by choice and the pillows are hypoallergenic for obvious reasons. We removed the soft furnishings in the lounge when Covid struck as they cannot be cleaned in between guests, feeling that most guests would prefer that these are still absent. The issue of the previous guest's boots is a new one for us! The usually excellent cleaning team must have missed them! Property Owner

If bringing 2 cars the second one should be on the small side. Warning: you do need to jump to get to the bed in the single room! Teen son was quite happy; mother would have found it impossible! Would happily return.

Thank you for your feedback - we are please that you enjoyed your stay in Gale Mews. We park our Passat estate on the smaller of the two parking spaces but it does need some careful positioning! The data on the website does state that the single room has a cabin style bed. We hope you manage to return to stay again in the future. Property Owner

  • "We have visited Gale Mews on four occasions over the years and the refurbishment has turned it into a lovely holiday home."

Well placed for access to amenities and for walking. Just a slight reduction in comfort and maintenance as the dining chairs were a bit unstable. The livingroom fire and the dining room television did not work. Just minor points which did not detract from the enjoyment of our holiday.

Thank you for your feedback, we have made a note of your comments. We are so glad that you like the refurbishment and look forward to welcoming you back again in the future. The living room fire is awaiting a replacement starter unit. The dining room TV ariel had been detached and it works perfectly on re-plugging it in. We have tightened all the chairs in the dining room but did not find any that were particularly loose. The floor is slightly uneven in places (it was built in 1880!) and this may give the impression of the chair(s) being unstable. Property Owner

It was spacious, by far the cleanest property that we have stayed in for years and plenty of cooking utensils which made it easy to cater for the family. The entrance hall with space for our walking boots, fleeces and waterproofs made this an ideal base for us. 10/10 for everything. We will definitely book this again.

  • "Fabulous location House was as advertised , clean and well equipped."

It was chilly the first night and the heating worked but the gas fire did not and precious guests had noted this. Disappointing it had not been fixed. The sofas are very low , too low for comfort if a tall person. We considered booking again but between our first look at the website to check availability and going back the following day to book the price had risen by £ 200. I spoke to the team and this is apparently like the airlines , if people are looking they hike the price. We were upset and have booked with an individual home owner to return to the Lakes.

The improvements are generally great, the garden (terrace) has become a bit bleak (and windy) and could use some planters and a brolly! But the house is still warm and comfortable and is always our first choice.

  • "The photos in the advertisement showed the back of the property but not the road side."

This would have given us a better indication of the property on the road when driving up the road. Whilst the information states that there is parking for two cars, one would have to be extremely small. Property is very well equipped and it was great to have an area for wet coats and muddy boots. Kitchen had all the equipment you could want for catering for a family. All other rooms were well furnished and comfortable. If the property were to be filled with a family it would be useful to have access to extra toilet rolls and towels, although there was a washing machine and drier. The property had been cleaned well but some of the cutlery was dirty. Although it did not affect us, access to the property for anyone with mobility issues would prove challenging. We would definitely use this property again.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
