  • "We had a lovely stay at Springwell Cottage."

Loved: - Location - minutes walk from the heart of Ambleside - Size - a rabbit warren of rooms! Including two lounges, and two washrooms, and a good sized kitchen and dining space. - Value - great price for the location and size - Super dog friendly - Well equipped, has everything you need and more! - Comfortable beds and pillows To note: - There’s no parking, so you have to park in nearby public car park. It’s across a busy road, and spaces can be limited, but there’s a free parking pass in the house. - Lots of low ceilings and beams common to Lakeland houses. Not great for those taller people. - The hot water runs hot and cold when showering, and couldn’t take a hot bath. - Opposite a pub, so some low level noise when people come and go. Not too bad but could be an issue for reactive dogs. For the price, you won’t get much better and recommended. Thanks for a lovely stay.

  • "The cottage was in a great location."

Very spacious and had everything you may need and more - welcome hamper on arrival, plenty of items like bin bags, washing up liquid, cleaning materials etc. Close to all amenities- we parked in the nearby car park and made full use of the complimentary permit - and took buses during our stay. The only slight downside was the lighting on the staircase between the kitchen and the first lounge - we had to leave the light on at all times. There is a warning sign but it wasn’t visible in the dark. Once we got used to the layout of the cottage it was fine. The subtle signs on all the cupboards were very helpful too. Would definitely visit again. Thank you.

Spacious but cozy at same time. Some low beams and doorways as you would expect and some labelled with warnings. Overall liked it very much. Kitchen well equipped but oven trays could do with an upgrade and no bread knife?. Not a dog owner myself, but if you are there is a dog basket and other accessories you might need such as water bowls etc. Handy location with shops a couple of minutes away. Pub opposite nice and no excess noise to worry about either in our experience. Would stay again

  • "We have stayed here before and loved it but this visit was horrendous."

We were left feeling very stressed and upset. Building works were ongoing all week to the rear of the property, with the whole access road being dug up - terrible noise, dirt and zero access from 8am. Our elderly dog couldn’t get upstairs to use the other door and so was a prisoner all week - and that door is straight onto a busy road with no pavement, so not really safe for our 3 children. Also, water running down the twin bedroom wall, by beds. Multiple calls, messages etc to Sykes. Photos/videos sent daily of both issues. No help at all, no response, no offer of any compensation. Works had been notified to owner prior to our visit (we found the letter). We should’ve been told and would have cancelled. Just left so upset and disappointed - really happy to get home.

Thank you for taking a moment to review your recent stay, we are sorry to hear that your return trip to Springwell Cottage was not as expected. The unfortunate roadworks that was taking place was being undertaken by the council and was outside of the owners control. Although they may have put a letter through the door, this would have unlikely been seen by the Owner or us as the managing agent and wouldn't be a valid reason to cancel your holiday penalty free, We would only offer compensation for matters in which the property is at fault or we/the owners had the ability to influence the situation. Our Maintenance Team have visited the property on changeover, and the issue with the twin bedroom wall, was a historical water mark on the wall which the owner is seeking to fix the issue. Thank you. • "Beautiful cottage in the lake district, TICK."

Facilities to suit people staying at the cottage, TICK. Dog friendly, TICK. Unfortunately, there the positives end, very dirty, I fully appreciate that it is a dog friendly facility, however the dust (OMG on top of the wardrobe having placed my bags there), dog hair from numerous types of K9 throughout took the shine of this ideally located facility. The dust and dog hair forced me to make an emergency visit to the chemist in the town for an inhaler. I have two dogs of my own, I haven't used an inhaler in years. I'd suggest a temporary closure of this facility for a robust 'deep clean' and the replacement of several mats and rugs. It's a shame, this was part of my honeymoon, slightly tarnished.

Thank you for your feedback, the owner has asked us to put a response on, he is sorry to hear this impacted your stay there was a deep clean done just before your stay, if these points were raised during your stay we would have been able to attend and solve the issues. Property Owner

Everything we needed was provided for and the bed was very comfortable. Our dogs were made to feel very welcome with beds provided etc. The best pub in Ambleside is just opposite the cottage, although I couldn't understand why the description says 3 mins away when it's more like 3 seconds ! The Golden Rule is the friendliest pub we've been to in a long time. A good local butcher, baker and deli are just around the corner and great to support local businesses on our doorstep. The WiFi was very hit and miss and constantly dropping but we managed. Would definitely recommend to anyone..

  • "The cottage overall was lovely and spotless clean with lots of facilities for a self catering stay."

Was also well set up for doggy friends. It’s close to the town and all its amenities and literally 25 feet door to door of what is arguably the finest pub in the lakes if not England - The Golden Rule. No faff no gimmicks just an old fashioned pub. Returning to the cottage, the TV was complicated to use and the courtyard was smaller than expected. It’s not really suited for elderly or less able guests as both bathrooms are upstairs round a narrow bending staircase though their are lots hand supports. The settees weren’t the most comfortable due to a lack of seat depth and we feel the small lounge could be better used as a downstairs WC/shower room or small bedroom with en-suite due to all the other living space. Massive kitchen and separate massive dining area and the 3 bedrooms are also extremely spacious.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. Please note that this is a Grade 2 listed property which is what adds to the charm. This means that internal structural changes are restricted. We are glad that you enjoyed the location and all that the property and are have to offer. Owner Relations Team Property Owner

We really love the location as it’s very central to Ambleside. A lovely pub directly opposite. It’s a spacious cottage with comfortable beds. It is very well equipped including washing machine and tumble drier and a very well equipped kitchen. The tea and coffee facilities on the landing area is a nice touch, as is the complimentary wine and the various condiments etc available in the kitchen. The dining area could do with some cosier lamps and lighting, and the reed diffusers and air fresheners need replenishing as the cottage smells in some areas, probably due to the age of it.

When we arrived at the cottage we were a little alarmed that it may be noisy as it is on a Road opposite The Golden Rule. However I can honestly say we both slept incredibly well and the house is so spacious and solid we were hardly disturbed at all. We have an extremely reactive ex farm Border Collie and he was my main concern initially as this was his first time away with us. Initially he was very reluctant to enter the property (which is very normal for him) but after a couple of days he was so relaxed and slept very well. I would definitely book this cottage again - so comfortable, with a remarkable choice of rooms and equipment and literally a stroll away from Ambleside shops and eateries. I go where my dog is happy first and foremost!!

  • "This is a very comfortable and spacious cottage with a really well equipped kitchen."

You could easily cook full meals here. There are also condiments, herbs and spices, and even some tea and coffee sachets. We brought basic washing up kit and a tea towel as instructed by Sykes, but none of it was needed. There are also at least two hairdryers which I had not seen mentioned on the description, so brought along. One of the bulbs in the bedside lamp went, and it was good to have a spare in the cupboard. There are dog bowls, mats for the bowls and even a dog bed. We didn't use any of them as we'd brought our own, but always good to have back up. Dog owners will need to take dogs a few minutes' walk away for early morning/late evening exercise as the "patio" is tiny and there are no grass verges etc in the immediate vicinity. The cottage is really well situated, close to shops, pubs and restaurants in Ambleside. The car park is only 2-3 minutes walk away, and the permit could be used in several car parks. The only slight downside for us was that there are quite a few changes in level in the cottage which were sometimes tricky for my elderly parents to negotiate. However, in general, that adds to the charm of the place, and it certainly wouldn't stop me from booking again (without elders!) or recommending to others.

Thank you for your comments. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit, and found the cottage spacious and comfy. We hope to welcome you back again. Property Owner

The only thing that sticks out is the top drawer runner in the dishwasher may need replacing or repairing. Only used it a couple of times and when pulling the drawer out to fill the dishwasher, the right hand side came off its runner. • "The house smelt awful when we entered and the smell lingered for a couple of days."

It was reminiscent of a hospital smell and hard to tell if it was something the cleaner had used prior to our stay (the floors were still wet) but after a few days we discovered the lining of the curtain over the back door was literally covered in mould so that might have contributed to the smell. We knew the patio area was small but it was awful. There was a huge wheelie bin on there and wherever it was placed you would not have been able to sit anywhere without it being right next to you. It was crammed full and the lid was ajar so it smelt. The patio itself was unusable because the chairs had degraded with bits of the seat bottoms dropping off. You simply could not use them. The sofas did appear to be quite new but as per previous feedback we have read they are simply not comfortable but this is nothing to do with how new they are, It is because the seating part is so small. They have no seat depth so you end up perched on them and you are unable to relax. There are signs literally everywhere in the property warning you or advising you about this and that. The one place there were no warning signs was above the doors in the bedrooms. I cut my head open on the frame of the double bedroom first on the left as you come up the stairs. This was because rather than a traditional frame construction, there is a thin wooden frame running inside the door frame that is about 3-4 mm thick. I caught my head on this as I exited the room one night and I am only 5' 8"! I appreciate the bathrooms are new but the sinks are too small and the lighting in the bathroom with the bath is inadequate with no light anywhere near the sink so shaving is an issue. Even in summer (though granted it was not a hot week) we found not being able to open the windows due to secondary glazing prevented being able to get some fresh air in the property was a a big issue. Having said all this, the property was well equipped and actually considerably bigger than we expected. We were a party of 6 and we never felt cramped. It was clean (apart from the mould) and the kitchen was very well equipped. The location for us was perfect. We know Ambleside very well and the cottage is very central and 6 steps from possibly our favourite pub in the world - 'The Golden Rule'. So a mixed bag. We would not return but we did have a good week.

Thank you for your feedback. We have contacted you directly to address these points. Property Owner

Springwell Cottage is positioned right opposite the Golden Rule pub so great news for staggering home - about 7 or 8 steps!! The road is pretty quiet and we had the windows open at night due to the good weather and really didn't hear any traffic. The facilities are good and the kitchen is very well equipped for cooking if you don't want to go out every evening. There is limited storage for food in the kitchen, but the fridge/freezer is full sized so plenty of room in there, There is a parking pass for the nearby car park - it is possible to park up nearish to the cottage and offload/pack up your items - otherwise if you have a lot of stuff or have heavy bags, because it's slightly uphill, it is a bit of a trek but nothing to write home about.

In the past we have arrived to a few personal seasonal touches like chocolates, shortbread and a bottle of wine along with a lovely Christmas card. Noe of that this year which we found disappointing as it’s the little things that make the difference. A new sofa in the front room was really uncomfortable and meant we had to sit around the dining table most of time which was not ideal. The location of this property is great, no so much so for those with mobility problems as it’s in a hill and the access to the back door can be difficult due to paving slabs placed on gravel that move around and also the access to the front door is directly into a narrow road. That said we knew this as like I said it’s not our first visit but that comment is more for those who have not stayed there. While there we looked at the lake lovers site to book somewhere for next Christmas and we’re shocked to see this property had gone in in price so much for 2022. While I appreciate that it might bring it in line with other properties of a similar size I feel that most other properties are beautifully refurbished and modern. This property has clearly not been refurbished (apart from the 2 bathrooms) but could do with it if you are to charge similar prices to the more modern ones.

The best thing about it is it’s location … right in the heart of Ambleside near all the shops, restaurants and pubs. Pub literally over the road which is cosy. We love the old fashioned and rustic feel to the cottage and some reviews talk about it being modernised but to us that would spoil the feel and the charm of it. The kitchen is well equipped, the lounges comfy and cosy and the welcome pack includes wine and biscuits which is a lovely touch. We would like to see some cosy lighting/lamps introduced to the dining area as we spend our evenings there and the ceiling lights are quite bright. The double beds are very comfy , the two singles less so and could do with some mattress toppers. All beds included spotlessly clean linen and both bathrooms are modern and clean. Highly recommend.
