  • "We found the cottage, though small, very comfortable."

In particular the floor heating, because this June was very cold for the time of year. The kitchen may need one or two more larger pans. Parking was no problem but I needed the help of my wife to give a few directions. The location appeared to be very good for exploring the Dales in different directions

  • "Lovely cottage."

Very comfortable and well equipped. Quirky stairs to bedroom but fine if you take your time. Nicely furnished and homely. Very clean. Parking not a problem as we have a small car. Worth walking to cottage from road to check if suitable for your car. Having toilets upstairs and downstairs a bonus. Would highly recommend.

Bed was very comfy and so was the duvet and bed linen. was a nice surprise when we got there to find milk in the fridge and cheese and fruit cake on the table. would recommend to everyone.

  • "Lovely cottage and small private garden, really comfy bed!"

Lovely walks straight from the cottage and a short drive away to see amazing waterfalls such as Ingleton falls, hardraw force and aysgarth falls. Hawes is a great for a pub lunch and small shops.

  • "Cottage was warm and comfortable but more mention should be made about stairs , not only are they steep but also the curve means a narrow step."

Parking at door involved tricky reversing and alternative parking not so near when carrying a case.

The fruitcake and cheese are a nice touch too!

  • "Wonderful week spent at East House."

Everything provided in the house is to a very high standard with a fully equipped kitchen, well appointed lounge and very comfy beds. Lovely little garden where we enjoyed sitting in the sun with our coffee watching the sheep and lambs. Great location for lots of walks right from the front door. Local pubs in Hawes and surrounding villages where able to cater for coeliac dinner without any problems. We will come back many times as there is so much to explore from this lovely house.

  • "We returned for another fabulous week at East House."

We experienced all the seasons in 7 days; arriving in shorts and t-shirts and having to buy sun cream on the Saturday, heavy rain on the Tuesday and woke up to two inches of snow on the Thursday! Katy and Barny have made a number of improvements to East House since our last stay in July so it's even better! The underfloor heating came into its own during the cold snap. Very welcoming when you come off the fells in the snow. As has been said before, there are numerous walks from the cottage and there's plenty of literature in the lounge to plan your sojourns. The cottage was spotlessly clean on our arrival and a very nice welcome pack waiting for us. I have suggested that the ice tray be filled for guests arrival. After a long hot drive a warm G&T did quite fit the bill! East House is perfect for a couple wanting to just get away from it all for a week. With the bunk beds on the ground floor it does cater for four guests but we think that that might be a wee bit tight. As I said, another fabulous week in a fabulous cottage in the stunning Yorkshire Dales. Will we be back? You bet we will!!

  • "East cottage is a beautiful little cottage."

It has been really well updated and lovingly restored. The upstairs master suite is comfy. The extra bedroom and walk in shower downstairs was a great bonus. The kitchen it equipped with literally everything you might need! The only downside for us was the weather, but it meant we enjoyed the fire even more. We will definitely be recommending the house to friends and family

  • "There is only one negative that the lounge and the upstairs bathroom were very badly lit."

Otherwise everything was comfortable, cosy and we really loved the sweet front garden and even managed to sit in it a few times.

  • "A real bonus to have a double-bed downstairs."

Some adults might prefer this if not agile enough to get up the winding staircase. (I am aware that this is being changed to bunk beds from 1st Jan). Will they be 3 foot ones? The area is very quiet and breakfast in the garden was superb on the warm days.

  • "The lovely Yorkshire Dales!"

We chose Sykes as there was a good choice of cottages in the area we chose. East Cottage was just perfect. It had everything you could need, was immaculately clean and a wonderful place to come back to after a day exploring. Just outside Hawes it was not too far from shops and pubs etc but far enough away to be peaceful and a great place to rest and recharge. This holiday was just what we needed and to top it all off the weather was perfect too. I would definitely book with Sykes again. Thankyou

  • "A little gem in the Dales."

I'm afraid I'm a bit late posting this review due to unexpected circumstances on our return home. Nevertheless, this does not distract from what a a fantastic little cottage East House is. The first thing that hits you (once you've squeezed the car round the corners into the parking space!) is the high standard of presentation. Spotlessly clean, cheese and milk waiting for you, lovely bed linin and just mind blowingly comfortable. The kitchen is very well appointed with virtually every thing you need. The fridge however, is quite small and there is just an ice box to keep things frozen. The number of walks from the cottage are stunning. We recommend walking into Hawes either along the road or over the fields from the viaduct as parking in town is horrendous. Keeps you fit too. The small enclosed garden, with enough seating for four is north facing. So if you're hoping to catch the evening sun with your G&T after a days hiking, you've had it. So would we recommend East House? As a couple, without a shadow of a doubt. Three or four, might be a bit of a tight fit but as there were just the two of us, I'd leave others to comment on that. Would we go again? We've booked it for a week in spring 2022 and cannot wait!

The property

Hawes 1.4 miles.

Tucked away in the quaint hamlet of Appersett, just over a mile away from Hawes, is the striking 17th century dwelling, East House.

A charming abode exuding an abundance of character, this Wensleydale cottage features creative, traditional styling, which perfectly compliments its original features such as the old oak beams and stone flagged floor, and offers a delightful setting for a small family getaway or a romantic break to the countryside for two.

Spend your evenings snuggled up in front of the gorgeous 18th century stone and cast-iron open fire, as you watch all of your favourite movies on Netflix.

Continue through to the pretty country-style kitchen/diner where you can rustle up many delectable treats with the help of the wide range of appliances that lie within, before gathering at the beautiful wood dining table to tuck in to your meals whilst enjoying quality time with your significant other.

When you begin to feel yourself tire, take yourself off to the restful ground-floor single benefiting from its very own en-suite shower room, or climb the staircase to the wonderfully decorated king-size and discover a bright and spacious en-suite bathroom where you can indulge in a lengthy afternoon soak in the tub.

Start your mornings with a tasty cup of coffee out in the enclosed front garden as you embrace your lovely surroundings and breath in the fresh countryside air.

Grab your walking boots and delight in a short stroll to the Hardraw Force Waterfall, behind the wonderful Green Dragon Inn (the interior filming location for the Drover's Arms in the new All Creatures Great and Small).

A short stroll onwards across the meadows to Hawes, for all manner of independent gift shops, eateries, pubs and a well/stocked deli. Take a tour of the Dales Countryside Museum and explore Aysgill Force, or travel across to Middleham and uncover The Forbidden Corner.

Head underground through the longest show cave within the UK, White Scar Cave, and spot the imposing 18th century architecture of Ribblehead Viaduct as you embark on an awe-inspiring hike along the incredible Ingleton Waterfalls Trail.

With all this to do and more, a holiday to East House is simply not to be missed!

About the location

HAWES

Leyburn 16 miles.

Hawes is a popular market town in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire and is regarded as one of the honeypot tourist attractions of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Standing between Buttertubs and Fleet Moss, the town is an excellent centre for walking and touring Wensleydale and the adjoining dales of Swaledale, Cotterdale, Dentdale, Garsdale, Wharfedale and Chapel-le-Dale. Take a walk around the Hawes Town Trail, Millennium Walk, Pennine Way or along the River Ure, which is nearby. In 1998 Hawes was awarded the English Tourist Board Silver Award for the "Best Day Trip Out". Modern traffic has long replaced coaches and horse drawn wagons along its narrow streets, but market day (Tuesdays) in Hawes is as busy as ever, with a farmers’ auction attracting sheep farmers from all over the north of England. Traditional shops, cafés and inns now cater for a variety of Dales visitors as well as the local community. The award-winning Wensleydale Creamery, made famous by the animated Wallace and Grommit films, is now open to visitors so that they can see the famous cheese being made and sample the end product in a welcoming café. In the old station yard you will find the busy National Park Centre and Dales Countryside Museum. The Museum is home to the magnificent collection of Dales artefacts by the two great Dales historians and writers, Marie Hartley and Joan Ingilby.
