  • "We enjoyed our stay at Blacksmith Cottage."

It was clean, cosy and very comfortable, the bed being one of the most comfortable we've slept in. It is well equipped with everything we needed and had the added bonus of it's own off road parking space which we noticed many of the other cottages we looked at hadn't. It's well located just off the centre of town so only a few minute walk to all the amenities. Gill and Andy, the owners, live next door and were very friendly, there if we needed help but at the same time respected our privacy. We loved the town of Appleby-in-Westmoorland and hope to return.

I stayed here a week and was totally relaxed and comfortable the whole time. Andy and Gill are brilliant hosts attentive and friendIy. I found the king-sized bed very comfortable and the cottage had everything I needed for my stay. The smart TV worked well and I even used my5 to catch up on some missed episodes of Dalgliesh. Phone signal into the cottage was just enough to make voice calls but not for internet use. However the broadband in the cottage was excellent with good fast speeds. I made use of the thoughtfully provided tea, coffee, sugar, biscuits and milk. All super clean and nothing seemed too much trouble to ask of these excellent hosts. I would happily stay here again and highly recommend it.

  • "Location in the town had everything you needed within walking distance, and cottage was spacious and well equipped."

Owner very friendly and non-intrusive. Unfortunately there was constant road noise at night and early in the mornings (car doors banging, people walking by and 6.20am Saturday had scaffolding being taken down by builders across the road). This was mainly due to single glazing and the bedrooms at the front of the property, which disturbed our sleep greatly. The cottage should have double glazing which would block out a lot of the noise.

Thank you for your feedback which is always appreciated. Unfortunately your visit coincided with building work at the property opposite. Due to our property being a listed building we are unable to change the original sash windows to double glazed units. Normally there is very little traffic at night, sadly your visit must have coincided during a busy period. Regards. Gill & Andy Property Owner

However once you pull into the street that is lined with graid 2 listed buildings you get the feeling your in a lovely relaxing place. The cottage has space for parking your car outside the door. Once inside you have a comfortable, clean 2 bed cottage that has everything you will need for your stay. If you want to stay in and cook you will find everything you need from whipping up an omelette to creating a 3 course evening meal. A lot of properties say they are dog friendly when they actually just put a dog bowl out and think that's enough. The owners have their own dog and have really made this a holiday for your fury friend aswell. The garden is a stunning terrace, you step out on to a covered section then a set of steps takes you to the first level where you have a table and chairs and a swinging seat. Venture up to the second level your met with a lovely small green lawn and a stunning Japanese maple leaf tree. The garden is west facing so when the sun comes out its a little slice of heaven. Venture out into the village of Appleby your met with stunning architecture and walks, lovely shops, coffee shops and a couple of very nice pubs. The location of Appleby is ideal to explore Cumbria and the lakes. The owner lives next-door, there a lovely salt of the earth couple that gave us a very warm welcome, we have saved this one in our favourite list so are planning on a return visit. The property

This attractive terraced cottage, a former blacksmithÂ’s cottage is situated on a quiet lane, just a short walk from the centre of the ancient market town of Appleby-in-Westmorland.

This delightful old cottage provides an ideal base for exploring the Lakeland fells, with miles of pathways to discover, and with the added benefit of all the townÂ’s excellent amenities on the doorstep.

Warm and cosy throughout, this charming cottage is most welcoming with a well laid-out sitting room with original ceiling beam, a leather suite and access through to a well-equipped kitchen/diner.

The kitchen then leads out to a raised patio area and above that is a very pretty garden; a tranquil and elegant spot to soak up the sun, read a good book and enjoy your favourite tipple.

The two bedrooms are pleasantly furnished and styled and a good-sized bathroom ensures that guests have all they could ask for in this lovely Lakeland cottage.

This holiday home is a short walk to the main high street, Boroughgate, which is described as being one of the finest in England, and itÂ’s also only a short walk to the river where you can walk past the cricket ground and out along the river bank where friendly ducks and even an occasional elusive otter can be sighted.

Spend time exploring the magnificent countryside or take a trip on the famous Settle-Carlisle railway line and visit the likes of Settle and Skipton to take in the Yorkshire countryside before crossing the famous Ribblehead Viaduct.

To the west of Appleby is the Lake District whose northern and central lakes are within easy reach, and to the east lie the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

With the Yorkshire Dales, Hadrian's Wall and the Scottish Borders all within easy reach makes any holiday in this wonderful area a memorable one.

About the location

APPLEBY-IN-WESTMORLAND

Penrith 14 miles.

The historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland lies in a loop of the River Eden and is overlooked by the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with the Lake District Fells showing on the western horizon. Set at the heart of the lush Eden Valley and steeped in history, this is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is nestled between the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales, so guests can enjoy the contrasting scenery of these two National Parks, plus numerous walking and cycling opportunities as well as the fantastic leisure centre in the town. Appleby has a wonderful selection of quality independent shops, cafes and delicatessens selling locally produced food and crafts. The picturesque street of Boroughgate, with some interesting old buildings, is at the heart of the town and links the well-preserved Norman Castle with the fine medieval Church of St. Lawrence. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and still today many of the old steam trains wend their way along this line and over the historic and awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct. With the delightful Ullswater and the magnificent Lake District within easy reach, this is an ideal holiday location.
