For those willing to venture slightly further afield, Carlisle Castle is just a short drive away and offers rich history and fascinating architecture.

Nature enthusiasts will relish the loop trail near Penrith that takes you through Coombs Wood alongside the River Eden.

It's a gentle walk suitable for most fitness levels, offering picturesque woodland and riverside views.

Alternatively, the Armathwaite and Coombs Wood Walk starts from Armathwaite and leads into Coombs Wood, offering a serene woodland experience with paths covered in seasonal foliage -it's an ideal choice for those seeking a tranquil nature walk.

Travel to the historic market town of Penrith which is situated in the scenic Eden Valley just outside the Lake District National Park.

Known for its charming red sandstone buildings, the town serves as a gateway to both the northern Lakes and the Pennines.

Once the capital of Cumbria in medieval times, Penrith is rich in history, with landmarks such as Penrith Castle, a 14th-century ruin that once served as a stronghold for Richard, Duke of Gloucester (later King Richard III).

St. Andrew’s Church, with its striking 12th-century tower and the mysterious Giant’s Grave in the churchyard, is another historical highlight.

Penrith is also known for its independent shops, traditional pubs, and bustling markets - it has a strong sense of local heritage, reflected in the Penrith and Eden Museum, which showcases the area’s archaeology and social history.

Further afield, Carlisle Cathedral holds exquisite medieval carvings and while in the city, Tullie House Museum and Gallery is also worth a visit, displaying an impressive collection of fine arts, wallpapers, textiles, and costumes.

Closer to home, enjoy a picnic at Upperby Park, or for lovers of the occult, the mystical standing stones of Long Meg and Her Daughters are a must-see.

Your adventure to the picturesque Cumbria begins at Allendale House.

Where you’ll be staying

ARMATHWAITE

Carlisle 10.2 miles; Penrith 11 miles; North Pennines AONB 11.3 miles.

The attractive, unspoilt rural village of Armathwaite is ideally placed for exploring the Lake District, Eden Valley and the lovely coastline of the Solway Firth. The village has two old pubs, both with popular restaurants serving excellent food, a village Post Office and a traditional village shop. The River Eden runs through the centre of the village, and the area is renowned for its excellent salmon fishing, plus walking, canoeing and climbing. Armathwaite Castle, by the river, is a four-storey Pele Tower, and the 15th-century church has fine examples of stained glass windows. The Eden Gorge, between Lazonby and Armathwaite, is one of Cumbria's best-kept secrets, and is well worth exploring. The local railway station is a stop on the Settle-to-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and where today many old steam trains still wend their way through some of the finest countryside in Britain. The Rheged Discovery Centre in Penrith is the "largest grass covered building in the country" or you might like to visit Dalemain Historic House, featured in a television production of Jane Eyre. The town is within reach of the Lake District National Park and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, providing guests with many mountain biking, hiking, and birdwatching opportunities.
