  • "A lovely cottage in an ideal setting, peaceful and quiet."

Everything you could want was provided. The cottage was immaculately clean with extremely comfortable beds. Spectacular views from all windows and great to be able to see the sheep, and other wildlife. We were fortunate to see the rabbits, buzzard, vole, and barn owl during our stay there. Log burner kept us nice and warm, and nice to have a good supply of logs provided. We really enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend.

  • "The cottage is in a beautiful & peaceful location, ideal for local walks."

The back lobby is excellent for coats/boots, etc. The modernised kitchen & bathroom are both large & well-appointed with lots of storage, plentiful hot water & fabulous towels. The rest of cottage was more rustic with the idiosyncrasies of an older property eg ill-fitting windows, wonky stairs. It was very well-equipped with lots of little non-essential extras that were nice to have. However we felt that 8 mugs (2 of which were chipped) were insufficient especially compared to 55+ bowls/plates!!! There were one or two other minor maintenance issues that needed addressing. We did not use the log burner as the noxious smell of smoke from the previous guests persisted all week & affected my throat & lungs, however the CH was extremely efficient & took the chill off in a matter of minutes. [Our only other comment would be that the seating in the lounge would be extremely difficult for 5 people, but as a couple this did not affect us]

  • "We enjoyed our week at Newbiggin cottage, it was lovely and peaceful in a very scenic location."

We were very lucky with the weather, but very disappointed that we couldn't sit outside and enjoy it because the garden furniture was very rusty and in our opinion needed to be replaced.

I'm so sorry you didn't find the outdoor furniture to your liking; the shabby-chic look is perhaps not your taste but I believe the furniture is perfectly functional. There is also wooden furniture around the other side of the house which may have suited you better. Other than that, I hope you enjoyed your stay in our beautiful cottage. Property Owner

It is within easy access of wonderful walks and tourist attractions in the north Pennines and Northumberland. Amazing views in an idyllic setting. Not for you if you want shops etc on your doorstep. But if you want peace and tranquility go here. Well provided for in terms of kitchen items, great shower, good boot/wet gear room if you are there in winter or wet weather. Small enclosed garden around cottage larger area opposite near car parking area. Although the road to it is private, it does get used by people going to the Hall and farm so just need to be careful going out the garden gate to the car. Very comfortable for 4/5 adults or a family.

We enjoy the location and peace of the cottage and surrounding area. At this time of year, May, its fun seeing the newly born lambs bouncing round the neighbouring fields. Several enjoyable local walks across the Moors. Can recommend one over Birkside Fell and Newbiggin Fell. Also had the change to paddleboard on Derwent Reservoir. The cottage was comfortable and relaxing and we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. Great amenities; peaceful, picturesque surroundings and the gorgeous village of Blanchland close by. There was a power cut that affected the heating system on a particularly snowy day, however, on contacting the owner, they arrived to rectify the issue in no time at all. Excellent. Great walks on the doorstep and we had superb meals at both the Lord Crewe Arms and The White Monk Restaurant. Blanchland Abbey is a must see and also the scenic Derwent Reservoir. • "The cottage is in a beautiful location - absolutely stunning and for the most part was lovely."

There were a few issues with some chipped mugs, a toilet roll holder that fell off immediately on our arrival and the oven needed a really good clean, as do the window frames. The hoover was just left out in the hall when we arrived. We found the lack of mobile phone connection an issue- I realise you cannot do anything about this, but it would be good to let guests know this may be a problem. Due to the time of year, the moss outside the front door was very slippery and my daughter fell on this. Some of the furniture needs updating, but mostly it was a really good standard- the shower was lovely. Surprised to find no milk in the fridge and also no firelighters- just a few would have been nice as we didn't arrive until 4pm and after a long drive, didn't want to go out again.

Dear Mrs English I am sorry you did not find the cottage to your satisfaction. You did message me about the oven and mugs and I arrived within 15 minutes thinking that perhaps the oven cleaning had been missed. On looking at it with you I found it to be more than satisfactory. It does have a few small dark specks that you would expect with constant use but was by no means dirty. Thank you for bringing to our attention the couple of chipped mugs. I was able to replace one immediately and have since replaced them both. With regards the loo roll holder, it was attached on your arrival but it not possible to fix something before it is broken. It was reattached within 20 minutes of your message which I hope you found satisfactory but I am sorry for the inconvenience. With regards the mobile signal, it is Ok depending on your carrier but this is a rural area you dont get a signal from all the suppliers. However, the wifi is excellent and most people have their phone set to wifi calling and therefore it is not an issue. Indeed, this is the first time it has been mentioned. As soon as I read your feedback about your daughter falling I went to Newbiggin cottage but was unable to find any moss or slippery area. We do of course take our guests safely very seriously and I would have come around immediately if you had told me at the time. Perhaps you can contact me via Sykes to give me a precise location so I can address the issue? We supply a welcome box of fresh coffee, snacks and local produce but we do not supply milk. There is also plenty of kindling, matches, newspaper and logs but I would have been more than happy to come and light the fire for you if you were unable to and I am very sorry if you were not satisfied with your stay. We welcome your comments and we will certainly address the issues that need addressing. Property Owner

BLANCHLAND

Edmundbyers 4.5 miles; Durham 24.7 miles

Engulfed by magnificent fells, Blanchland straddles the Northumberland and Durham border in the North Pennines AONB.
