  • "My only criticism is the bed pillows which were lumpy and uncomfortable."

We had an amazing short stay at this wonderful cottage 13th - 16th September. The welcome pack of cake & wine was lovely and we were surprised at the amount of logs that were left as a starter pack. Cottage was clean and warm with all amenities available We absolutely loved the summer house and garden and spent most of our time outdoors. Our pooch settled as soon as we arrived at the cottage which was a good indication that we also were going to enjoy our break. A doggie basket with toys, towels and water bowl was all set up in the kitchen. One of the most comfortable cottages we have stayed in.

Well equipped with a secure garden for the dogs. Lovely quiet location in the hamlet of Higher Newton. Great base for exploring the Lakes. The only disappointment was the lack of footpaths where you can allow the dogs off the lead close to the cottage. Julie the owner was exceptionally helpful and welcoming. The accommodation is deceptively spacious, clean, comfortable and well equipped and the enclosed garden was a real bonus for our dogs. I especially enjoyed the summerhouse for a quiet glass of wine in late afternoon! The system is well-organised, with access easily arranged, and the owner went out of her way to be helpful, including a welcome treat appropriate to our dietary issues. As a base for exploring the southern Lake District it's a great place to stay.

Communication with property owner was great, and we appreciated the little basket with dog toys and blankets/towels. Garden was “tiny-dog escape proof” (we tested

Being old traditional stone the cottage got very cold in the evenings on occasion and it would have benefitted from better instruction to use the storage heaters as we ended up heating the house the following day in error and it was a very hot day so a waste and not at all ideal. Facilities were all good although double bed was really too small for two and quite hard and uncomfortable so us oldies had to move to the upper floor room where beds were luxurious but a bit of a struggle up and down the loft stairs. We worked it out and we were all comfy in the end. We would have preferred to be somewhere with dog walking paths from our door but had to drive for that as there were no accessible paths where dogs could be let off lead but of course we were spoilt with places to drive to in the beautiful Lakes so we could work that out too. Overall a nice pleasant week in a very peaceful setting. Yew Tree Barn a few minutes walk away served a perfect brunch which we highly recommend

Perfectly sizeable for the family of 4 with two dogs. It had everything we needed for week long stay. Our dogs loved the facilities and we knew they were very welcome as the host left us some toys and dog towels too. The only drawback to the holiday was the lack of amenities in the village. We arrived on Easter Sunday which was always going to be challenging in terms of food. We hoped for a nice meal at a local pub but unfortunately it was way out of our price range as it’s run by the Michelin star chef. Non the less, we managed to find some nice food places nearby. The local cafe in Yew Tree Barn is definitely worth a visit for some lunch and cake! The cottage is in ideal place for exploring south lakes, NationalTrust gems and local beaches. Next doors cat liked to come to back door and bare its teeth winding the dogs up so we had to keep door curtain closed. Front steps direct onto a road which was quite busy at times. Really enjoyed our stay at your cottage. The lady opposite where we parked the car and one further down with candles on herstep were friendly and gave us directions to shops and food places which was helpful. We struggled to find the cottage [even the postman couldn't help] but bar staff at the heft were very helpful and after alot of looking on the Internet they managed to work out where we we needed to be. Although car parking is across the road (one car) there is an allocated space just a few paces from the cottage door. No street lights - bring a torch if coming and going after dark! The village is very quiet, and the road has only occasional traffic, but road noise from the nearby A590 is noticeable in top bedroom with windows open, but easy access to A590 also means easy access to road network to explore the area.

It was clean, the kitchen was well equipped and the rear garden a lovely sun trap. The top bedroom does indeed have steep steps, as described. The room does not have a proper blind. A thin piece of white cotton is draped over it but fails to stop any light so consequently the room is very light and difficult to sleep in if you prefer a darker room. We ended up fashioning a blanket over the bamboo pole. Neither bed is particularly comfortable however this could be individual preference. The lower sheet on the middle floor bed had laundered but dry blood staining which was unpleasant. There is a fair amount of noisy, fast moving farm traffic using the narrow lane right outside the cottage mainly morning and late afternoon. The cottage smelt clean on arrival but the following mornings there was quite a smoky smell in the living area. This may have been as a result of the previous week’s occupants as we did not use the wood burner. The pub was closed which was a huge disappointment. Renovations are progressing and it looks to be opening for the summer. Yew Tree Shop is a gift/ antique shop with a popular cafe. It also sells a range of chutneys, beers and wines. For families Fell Foot National Trust Property is very close and a lovely day out with the kids but book online in advance. Great ice cream, a pizza landrover, water sports and shallow water for playing etc. Dog friendly too. The walk to High Dam near Newby Bridge is also very pleasant.

The cottage has everything you need and is in a lovely village with a good pub and good road connections to get around the district. I stayed with my 2 sons and dog to do some walking as this cottage makes a great base. Stuart from Kent

From the moment we arrived we could relax. Great welcome pack of cakes and wine. Perfect to enjoy on a warm evening in the garden. Doggy friendly also so our pooch settled very quickly. We will definitely be staying again and recommend to anyone who loves the countryside and a peaceful holiday.

Welcome pack a lovely touch and instructions on how to use appliances easy to follow. I would certainly recommend this cottage because it is situated in a tranquil area with easy access to other areas for days out. Thank you for making my break to the lakes comfortable.

  • "Lovely homely cottage described accurately online."

Comfortable clean rooms, small bathroom and not so great if you’re tall however it was perfectly adequate for us. Dogs were welcomed and supplies on arrival were a lovely touch both for us and our four legged friends. Beautiful garden, just a shame we had poor weather as I’m sure it’s a real feature in the warmer, drier months. Overall a lovely cottage with a nice local pub with excellent food. Just one watch out there are some very fast moving vehicles that travel up/down the road as you step out of the cottage!

  • "Really lovely cottage."

We stayed during the cold snap, and although it was freezing outside the cottage was warm and cosy and the log burner was super. Cottage was charmingly furnished, and we especially appreciated the cakes, wine and roses left by the owner on our arrival. Location was spot on - village pub a short walk away and the food was great, beer good too! So much to do just a short drive away. Would definitely recommend this cottage.

All I can put is that I would have ticked on excellent for all of them. This was the first time that we have spent xmas away from home but from this visit, it won't be the last. We both loved this cottage and the little extra that Mrs Bowen left us were heart warming. Lovely stay, lovely area, lovely cottage. Well worth going back to again. Many thanks
