  • "Lovely, roomy and comfortable house in a stunning & remote location."

..we had a great family holiday in this stylish and well appointed place. Sure it's a little crumpled at the edges (though we experienced no issues like those reported in other reviews) but nothing really concerning. It's an exposed house, but underfloor heating keeps the house nicely cosy. Views are stunning, it's a great place to escape to...we will definitely be back!

  • "All the issues raised by previous holiday makers had been addressed."

The house was spacious and comfortable with absolutely stunning views. It was a peaceful and relaxing place to be. The dishwasher gave up on Sunday morning and was repaired by 10.00 on Monday morning - a speedy service.

  • "Unfortunately the owner has not been honest about this property."

The shower has never been repaired and does not work. The plumber visited but did not repair it. The brewery has closed down and barrels and equipment are strewn around and unsafe for children. The grass was cut at the end of our week, no garden chairs. No house name displayed so hard to find.

Apologies for shower failure - it had been re-plumbed but unfortunately the thermostat failed. The plumber visited and found it needed a new unit which had to be ordered, now replaced. Grass had not been cut as it was very wet due to bad weather. Thank you once again for your comments. Property Owner

  • "This was once a beautiful house, but has been shocking neglected."

It is damp, mould patches everywhere. Honestly it is a health hazard, not a 5 star house. The house seems not to have been cleaned in weeks if not months. We contacted the owner but she only replied she would speak to the cleaner. While we had to clean the toilets ourselves because of urine stains everywhere. Oh and dog hair all over the house in a pet free house? This house should not be on the Sykes website!

  • "Nicely decorated and beautiful location but disappointing lack of basics that niggled."

There were only 4 small towels out when we arrived. We then found the rest in the dryer and washing machine and the biggest towel was what I’d consider a hair towel. There was no hand soap (found in the cellar), no kitchen towel, dishwasher tablets etc. Also significant damp upstairs and no signage from the road which would make it a lot easier to find. Overall a pleasant stay but the housekeeping arrangements need review to be up to scratch. There is only one shower in the en-suite which is as advertised but worth noting - especially with the small towels!!

  • "The house was beautiful in a very remote area."

. it was comfortable, warm and clean. There were a few issues that were mostly attended to immediately, however the one thing that really impacted on our stay was the fact that despite being advertised with 2 showers there was in fact only one, shared between 5 people it was a bit of a problem, yes there was a bath but we didn’t want a bath. Also there was no signpost at the bottom of the drive way to indicate that the drive led to Hollins, a sign would have made finding the house much easier. Despite these problems we had a lovely relaxing week in a fabulous area that we did not know at all.

  • "Reading the description, and seeing the pictures this would be a beautiful and perfect place, However."

... This is a house riddled with damp! Every external wall had signs of mould. In most cases this appears to have been cleaned up however in the small bedroom it had been ignored. When we first saw the mould on the wall alongside the bed, my wife wiped with her fingers and we both choked on the spores as they were disturbed. In the corners behind the bed the walls were black as was the upper corner around and behind the picture. With my grandchildren arriving in a few hours we decided to clean off the mould from the walls and move the bed away from the external wall. It took about 30 minutes to rid the room of the black spores but the house should never have been let out in this condition. There is nowhere on this review to show pictures but disgusting and unhealthy describe this adequately. In our pre-arrival brief, we were advised that "it is an old house" and " could get damp" therefore we were requested and (dutifully complied) to, run the fans after shower and open bedroom windows daily. This is probably the owners way of getting around this but showering and sleeping, is not the cause of the damp in this house. The underfloor heating is set on all day which compensated for this a bit and we left all the room doors open during our stay to allow air to circulate throughout the house. In the front double with the west facing side wall there were patches of what looked like slime on the wall. I didn't clean this off as it appeared to be bubbling the paint and was afraid that trying to remove this would take the paint off the wall. Mould on solid surfaces such as window frames can be easily removed but not sure if the cleaner even considers this, particularly as it looks like they never get cleaned. The shower has been removed from the main bathroom and this was not highlighted either by the owner or Sykes. With only one shower in a 4 bedroomed house to accommodate 7 guests there is quite a challenge in the morning with everyone queuing to use the only shower in the master bedroom en-suite. Had we known this, we would never have booked this house for our needs with 4 adults and 2 teenagers. In places, some aspects of the house cleaning is questionable. The marks and soiling in the microwave, plates in the cupboard , tea coffee & sugar canisters, and the greasy surface of the cooker hood made us question how much time is spent on preparation for guests. I'm 6'2" and the thick dust on the top of the washer in the downstairs closet caught my eye every time I went in there, not to mention the dead flies on the window cill. The brewery has been closed since last year and everything around is a mess with empty beer barrells strewn all over the place. The outside and back of the house area is a tip. There is a half full drum of CIP100 which is a very corrosive chemical sitting in front of the brewery. That needs to be disposed of by a specialist chemical disposal company and at least stored securely until then. If I apply the blinkers and ignore the above, this house is in a very peaceful location, has great interior space and an owner with impeccable taste for furnishings and interior design . The WiFi is great and is the only way to use your tech. If you want to get away from the world, there is no mobile signal from either EE, O2 or Vodafone at the house. It is with the blinkers removed that we feel compelled to say we could not recommend Hollins due to the damp and mould, only having one shower, the attention to preparation cleaning, and the untidy area around the brewery.

About the location

DENT

Sedbergh 4 miles; Kendal 15 miles.

Dent is a small village in the dale of Dentdale, and makes a wonderful place for touring both the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District. It has a village green together with cobbled streets and a pretty 12th century church. It also has its own brewery producing Aviator Ale, Ramsbottom and Golden Fleece beers – of course these are available in the village pubs to enjoy. The village offers a variety of shops and places to eat and the market town of Sedbergh is only a short drive away. Dent also has a main line station on the Carlisle to Settle railway and crosses giant viaducts at Arten Gill and Dent head before disappearing into the Blea Moor tunnel to Ribblehead viaduct. This is excellent walking country with the “Dales Way” running close by and Whernside, one of the famous “Three Peaks”, to the south.
