  • "I was concerned from the review before our stay but was reassured from Sykes team."

On arrival we had a personal note from the owner with bubbles, milk, tea & coffee too. The cottage is beautiful, plenty of room, well equipped too. It's in a rural area & very quiet but close to access South Lakes area, the neighbours were friendly, we had amazing weather so having the garden was lovely, great views. Yes there was a slight damp smell when the cottage was shut up, a a couple of plugins sorted that out so not an issue for us. We visited Coniston Water, took a boat trip on Windermere, visited all along the coast from Bardsea up to Saint Bees, visited Lakeland Motor Museum, The Ruskin Museum seeing Campbells Bluebird was surreal, walked up The Old Man Coniston, Stock Ghyll Waterfall. As I had my birthday whilst away we had a surprise trip to Bardsea Alpacas & Llamas, Ste & Laura were so friendly, the Alpacas are lovely, a great experience & I would highly recommend, we also visited Ambleside, Ulverston & Kendal. Highly recommend & would happily stay again Thank you Jamie

Very pleased to hear you had a good time and many thanks for the brilliant recommendations. Property Owner

  • "On arrival we noticed that the whole cottage was extremely dirty, the only clean parts were the beds, what a relief!"

We actually had to clean every part of the cottage which took over an hour before we even unpacked, this is the last thing you want to do after driving hours. It was embarrassingly dirty, we couldn't believe it, cob webs and spiders in every room, the floors looked like they hadn't even been swept or mopped, kitchen tops and oven had old food over it, the walls near the bin covered in food spills. The toilet in the upstairs bathroom was very noisy and kept making werid sounds when you used the taps, didn't sound like the system was working. The neighbours clearly don't want this cottage to be a holiday let, they made this known by making lots of noise and driving cars up and down the drive next to the cottage. Bring your own knifes as only a bread knife to work with when cooking. No wifi till mid week and heating and water has to be turned on every time you want it using a very difficult thermostat. The cottage is so lovely and in a brilliant area, we didn't want it to ruin our holiday so we just carried on. I'm really surprised overall about this cottage after reading the reviews so unsure what went so wrong. I wouldn't recommend this cottage.

Sorry to hear about this. I wish you'd called our fabulous property management team who would have dealt with any issue very quickly. Their details are provided in the Visitor Handbook. Property Owner

  • "Stunning cottage, tranquil setting and a beautiful garden with a wonderful view."

The cottage is bigger than it appears on the photos and is easily enough space for a family of 4 or 5. The place was very clean, and everything that was required for the stay was provided for. We were about 5mins drive from Coniston, and on the East of the lake there's a parking spot right next to the lake. Although the cottage's location is quite isolated (there's just a quiet pub and a church within walking distance), we found it was a pretty good location from which to explore The Lakes (if you don't mind driving). I would just recommend including an information sheet to explain where the nearest amenities are, such as the nearest supermarket, pub, restaurant etc (It was findable on Google but it's better to rely on local knowledge). Thanks for a great holiday though -we would definitely stay at the cottage again, it had a lovely feel to it and made for a great holiday.

So glad you had a great holiday and many thanks for your feedback. There's a short section on Amenities in the Visitor Handbook which I agree could do with updating with some more info on supermarkets and new places to eat etc. We're looking forward to welcoming you back next year. • "We loved this cottage and its location."

The views from the back garden are tremendous and last week's exceptional weather allowed us to take full advantage of the outside seating with a drink or two. The cottage is extremely comfortable and the shower is one of the best I've ever experienced in a rented property. A pub within easy walking distance was a bonus. Will definitely return..

Thank you for this wonderful feedback. So glad you had good holiday and hopefully the sun shines again when you return. Property Owner

  • "Rose Cottage was a really nice cottage and in a very peaceful spot."

It was bigger inside than it appeared on line and was very clean. We have rented many cottages over the years and this was the first one that there was no welcome pack, we didn’t expect much, but as the cottage wasn’t near any shops at all we would have thought perhaps a pint of milk would have been useful. The welcome pack was some dishcloths wrapped in a paper sleeve, saying here’s your welcome pack have a lovely stay!! We have always stripped beds and cleaned and hoovered every cottage we have ever rented, but to arrive to a pack of dishcloths as a welcome pack when we have paid a substantial sum to rent a place for a holiday was a bit insulting I felt! We tried to use the microwave and flames were shooting out inside, and was very dangerous, we did leave a a notice on it saying very dangerous. The kitchen, whilst well equipped didn’t even have any salt and pepper, again we have never experienced this with any other cottage we have rented.

Thanks for your note on the microwave which we've replaced. And sorry you were disappointed that there were no consumables available when you arrived. Property Owner

  • "We loved our stay at Rose Cottage, which we found to be very spacious, comfortable and spotlessly clean."

The location really suited us, being slightly off the beaten track for tourists, yet just a short distance from Lake Coniston, Ulverston (for the supermarket and delicious fresh bread) and the beautiful South Lakes and coast. The views from the bedrooms are lovely, the kitchen very well equipped, the beds were super comfy and it has an excellent hot shower. The wood burners made for some lovely cosy evenings playing games (they have a great selection in the sitting room) and reading in front of the fire, and if the weather had been warmer we’d have spent a lot more time in the lovely garden. The cottage and our stay couldn’t have been better. This place is a gem. Thank you.

So pleased you had good holiday and thank you for the feedback. Property Owner

No major issues. Facilities easy to use. Spacious. Nice location for access to Coniston and Ulverston. The B road around Coniston lake is virtually on the doorstep, and perfect for cycling or walking. Garden really nice for a quiet drink if you get the weather. Would go back for sure.

Glad to hear you had an enjoyable stay. You're most welcome for next time. Property Owner

  • "The property we selected indicated that there was a pub within walking distance - which turned out to be closed for the full week of our stay, and a real fire in the living room which wasn't working due to a fault."

We were not informed of either of these prior to arriving.

We're very sorry that you weren't able to use the fireplace. This has now been replaced with a brand new wood burner. As for the local pub, it is now open as normal after a difficult time during the pandemic. Property Owner

  • "· I booked this cottage as an early 21st birthday gift for my stepchildren and for us to have some quality time as a family."

We arrived around 3.30pm and found the key safe as instructed in the email and entered the cottage. Well what can I say but how lovely it was we were thrilled with the location and the view was stunning. Clean spacious and very comfortable it had every possible home comfort you could possibly need. There were 5 of us in our party as my stepdaughter had brought her boyfriend along but we had plenty of space and the bedrooms were both roomy and extremely comfortable. I would certainly recommend such a delightful cottage and look forward to staying again at some point we all had a fabulous time.

2: There was a cracked glass which subsequently broke when we came to use it. 3: The hair drier in the master blew up and sparked when I went to use it, due to bare wires between the hair drier and the cable.

About the location

LOWICK BRIDGE

Ulverston 5 miles; Coniston 7 miles; Coniston Water 3 miles

There has been a settlement at Lowick since the Vikings in the 9th century, whose farmsteads were called Lofwik, probably meaning leafy creek or river bend. They will have settled and fished around the River Crake which runs from the southern end of Coniston Water into the Leven Estuary at Greenodd, and onto Morecambe Bay. Farming and agriculture have always been at the heart of Lowick, which also once boasted a tannery, blacksmith, old mill, police house, post office, and a local school. A short walk from Rose Cottage is St. Luke's Church and Lowick Hall, a small Cumbrian manor house, whose history stretches back nearly a thousand years. The nearest village is Greenodd with a butcher, baker and post office. The closest town is Ulverston, which was granted a charter for a market every Thursday in 1280 by Edward I, and still has market days every Thursday, as well as Saturday. There is an abundance of walks and activities in the area. From gentle ambling across the fields and fells from Rose Cottage, to mountaineering, marine activities and cycling in The Lake District National Park, and the sand and sea around Morecombe Bay. This is an ideal location for countryside and coastal pursuits.
