  • "Not child friendly."

No way of stopping children from walking out of garden. No door to kitchen. Location great, lovely and quiet.

  • "Lovely stay at Gorse Bank again."

The house is excellent in general. Just a few more kitchen utensils and jugs are needed, and better coverings/blackout blinds for the windows. This year we were prepared and took some dark sheets which we hung over the windows. Had a great time visiting Coniston Water did walking, boating, kayaking and went on the Steamer. The village is ideal, with beautiful local walks in Broughton Tower Estate, an excellent bakery, local shop and Antiques Centre.

  • "We had a lovely weekend stay with the family at Gorse Bank."

The location is great - close enough to the centre of Broughton in Furness to walk in and also near enough to the rest of the Lakes to easily drive anywhere else. The cottage was very spacious and had all the facilities described. Kitchen large enough to cook in and everything provided that you would need. Rooms clean, tidy and comfortable. We had a great stay and would recommend.

  • "Beautiful home that fit all seven of us adults in perfectly."

Thank you for decorating it for Christmas, it was lovely to be able to put our presents around the tree. Although the fridge and freezer were small we compensated by using the conservatory as a cold room which helped. The beds were incredibly comfy, we all slept very well in them. The only downside for us were the steps into the property. The top step isn't large enough to safely put your foot on and also being on a slope it was a struggle for both my elderly parents and myself (bilateral knee replacements) to get in and out of the front door. We were lucky that it wasn't icy. The back door and conservatory were better exits but then we had to walk down a steep slope. Maybe some grab handles to aid us fogies would be nice, other than that the property was wonderful and we all had a brilliant Christmas together.

Quiet area of the lakes. Very well equipped with everything you need for your stay. Beautiful Garden with added bonus of cows in field behind. There is wifi at the property but zero mobile signal to make calls or text. I had an electric car and there are charging points 2 min walk from property. Lovely walk along an old railway with stunning scenery. And the Bakery is a Must. Made a great base for getting out and about in the Lakes.

  • "We had a wonderful week at Gorse Bank."

The house was very comfy in general, and the owner was really helpful when we temporarily lost our car keys. She actually found them on her walk! Fantastic sunny weather, lovely market town with a brilliant bakery, everyone very friendly. Great to access all main attractions, Coniston Water especially. We would love to stay again, but there was only one issue which would help us for next time if it could be sorted out. The boys struggled to get off to sleep as the attic room and the single room were very bright. Ideally dark curtains in the single room/blackout roller blind and blackout blinds in the attic would easily solve the problem (others have left similar comments in the visitors book). Also curtains in the front bedroom for the same reason would be greatly appreciated. Sleep is so important, especially on holiday. Many thanks.

  • "Great week with family."

Property was spotless and well supplied. Nice kitchen with ample pots and pans. Great cooker (not cooked with gas for years, it was a treat). Bedrooms comfy. Warm throughout. Living room could really do with some additional thought into lighting. Due to its central location, there is little natural light, however ceiling light is far too bright for an evening. Needs some side/lamp lights for balance. The village was lovely. Small shop, butchers, baker and garage. Pubs were good. Would recommend Kings Head for food, the Manor for beer and chat. There is a third, you can make up your own mind. All in all, highly recommended. Thanks for having us.

  • "Er. 3 of the non stick pans were badly scratched and not safe to use they must have been in this condition for some time."

The walk in shower drain was partially blocked and progressively got worse over the stay flooding into adjoining utility room. I rang the contact number the response being the condition of the pans was known and there would be new ones for the next occupants! She was also aware of the shower issue but did not see it as a major problem. It wasn't pleasant wading in water and mopping out after use before the next person could use the facilities of the room.

  • "We enjoyed our stay."

Broughton is a nice little place and an excellent base for visiting the south-western lakes. We can recommend Muncaster Castle, Cartmel, Eskdale, Wasdale, the Duddon Valley, Sandscale Haws, and for rainy days the museums in Ulverston and Barrow. The cottage itself is fine for a week's stay, and in a nice quiet location, although the mattress in the front bedroom is very uncomfortable. If you're coming, I recommend you bring a mattress topper - I got some relief by sleeping on all the spare duvets. If you're from Sykes cottages, please change it.. As mentioned in the other reviews the sofas are just about tolerable and could really do with replacing too. With some upgrades to the furniture, and some of the pans in the kitchen, I would happily recommend Gorse Bank.

Tv is one side of room and sofa the other with the kitchen door between so you’re constantly walking in front of tv viewers between kitchen and dining room. Only a small detail but irritating. The dining room would make a lovely lounge/sitting room if swapped around.

An excellent grocer and baker are a short walk from the house with everything you need. There are also pubs serving food, including a Sunday roast at the Old Kings Head. Everyone was extremely friendly and that made the holiday even more special. On our last evening we went to the Blacksmiths Arms at Broughton Mills which is a really great family-run pub with an exciting menu of chef-cooked special meals. Such an authentic Lakeland atmosphere which was very special. We enjoyed some nice walks and touristy trips. The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway cannot be beaten for a lovely day out through wonderful scenery ending near Scafell with great walks before getting the train back. If you are interested in history don't miss Town End, a historic CUmberland farmhouse, but parking can be difficult there. Highlight - a trip on the steam gondola at Lake Coniston. It was clean, spacious and comfortable and had one of the most well-provisioned kitchens I’ve come across in many years of renting holiday cottages. We loved the garden too and patio area which was super for an outside meal or drink although people with very young children will need to be aware of the steep and uneven stone steps up to the lawn. The cottage is well located. There were seven of us plus baby in the party (one of the seven was a two year old) and our one frustration was that there wasn’t quite enough ‘comfy’ seating to accommodate all of us in the living room of an evening. Parties of six/seven might want to be aware of that. (Luckily we didn’t want to all spend every evening in so most nights it wasn’t a problem)

This cottage has been lovingly restored by the current owners to provide spacious, well-equipped accommodation which is ideal for a family or a group of friends wishing to get together and enjoy this largely undiscovered area.

This cottage features an open plan living area with a warm and cosy woodburning stove, a delightful summer room, a modern kitchen and four well laid out bedrooms.

Just a two-minute walk from the cottage is the charming town centre with its beautiful square lined with Georgian houses and the local pubs and restaurants.

Just six miles away is Coniston Water and for the more energetic there are the challenging fells of The Old Man of Coniston and Wetherlam, which offer a stiff challenge.

Visit the market town of Ulverston, or explore a little further on the coastline to Ennerdale and the magnificent Scafell Pike, the tallest point in England and probably the most beautiful area in Lakeland.

About the location

BROUGHTON-IN-FURNESS

Millom 7.5 miles; Coniston 9 miles; Ulverston 9.5 miles.

Dating back to the 11th century, Broughton-in-Furness is situated in the south western corner of the Lake District and is just six miles from Coniston Water. There is much to please the visitor such as a pretty, cobbled square complete with a splendid horse chestnut tree, enclosed by shops, pubs and homes, many of them Georgian in origin. The village provides an ideal base for a walking or climbing holiday, with ample opportunity to explore the rugged beauty of the Duddon Valley and the quieter Lake District fells. Norman Nicholson, one of Britain's finest 20th century poets and William Wordsworth, both immortalised this area in their writing and poetry. The village was home to Branwell Bronte, brother of the Bronte sisters, for a short time. The Furness railway line runs from nearby Foxfield and makes for an ideal day out, travelling the west coast of Cumbria. Set amidst the charm of the Lake District and close to the sea, this attractive town makes an inspiring choice from which to further explore a magical heartland of silver lakes, lofty towering peaks and lonely, heather-clad moors.
