  • "Clove Cottage was lovely, a really cosy and comfortable cottage."

It can be a bit hard to find initially, so the What Three Words for the bottom of the driveway is: legal.blues.cuddled. Once you've found the cottage, it is so lovely, with really peaceful and beautiful views. To get the shower warm, you need to press the red button while turning the dial. Everything else was lovely and we had a really calming and comfortable stay, with the biscuits and wine being a lovely touch. We also got extremely lucky and saw the Northern Lights right above the cottage! There's practically no light pollution so it's a really great spot to stargaze. Appleby is also a really nice and convenient town and the bakery is really good. Overall, a really lovely place to stay and would highly recommend for a peaceful getaway.

This was our second visit and felt like a home away from home. Even the dog really settled quickly. There was a slight issue getting the water hot enough but was resolved quickly. A lovely place to stop. Dishwasher drawer not working properly is the only very minor thing I would say needs fixing and was the same when we stayed last August.

This problem has been mentioned before both in the visitors book and on your website I really do think it’s time something was done about this and if so maybe I could be updated about it please. We are raising this issue not particularly for ourselves but future guests as I said before this ruined our so looking forward to holiday.

Many thanks for your comments and fantastic scores. Sykes Cottages do have a dedicated help line which is given out in pre arrival emails to guests plus a web message facility, whatsap etc, but Sykes did not receive any contact from you while you were there. We are sorry you had a concern, it is a state of the art oil fired boiler system that is professionally serviced. Historically as the property is in a very high geographical location at the top of the hill, and as it is oil fired, when extra windy there can be some occasional odour. We have put extra cladding on the utility room door and the room does of course have an operational carbon monoxide alarm. The annual service is due this week anyway so I will mention it to the plumber to see if there is anything we can do regarding any boiler odour when the weather is windy. Property Owner

  • "We really enjoyed our stay at Clove Cottage."

It was clean, comfortable and very relaxing. It is based about a 10 minute drive out of Appleby and is nicely in a rural location. Would thoroughly recommend. Only downsides were that finding the cottage for the first time was difficult as the instructions were not as clear as they could have been. Furthermore the owner of the cottage does not give his phone number unlike other lettings so we had to continue on looking for it rather then phoning up and finding out where we went wrong. The only other thing that annoyed us was they did some maintenance work to the glamming site opposite at 9pm in the evening when our daughter was trying to go to sleep one night. This may of had nothing to do with our owner but whoever it was was not very considerate! Finally and not a criticism just a heads up the towel rail in the en suite needs replacing as it is broken and the drain in the shower could do with an unblocker going down it as it drains away very slowly. Those things aside though a great holiday and we had a great time visiting Barnard Castle, Hawes, Lake Windermere, Keswick and Hadrian’s Wall.

  • "Jennifer Just to say that my wife and I had a superb break in Clove Cottage."

Compared to most cottages we have been to in the past 20+ years, this one was very comprehensively kitted out and a real hike in quality. The many people we met in and around the cottage were very welcoming and friendly and helped make our stay most pleasant. My wife did write a very positive review in the booklet. If possible I would appreciate it if you could pass on the following matters to the owners in order to improve the stay for other users. A spare toilet roll would be welcome. I read somewhere about the many walks for the cottage. Not so. The only walk from and to the cottage is along the road. The OS map does suggest numerous footpaths but all have not been used for many years or are overgrown. We struggled to find the cottage given that we do not have a sat nav. Luckily, I had an OS map of the area which proved essential. I think your website should include an OS map section to help newcomers There is a smell of kerosene in the hallway which tracks upstairs. There may be a fuel leak in the boiler. Ditto outside. It is impossible to sit in the small patio after 4pm because of the exhaust gases that track don from the short escape pipe. The upstairs shower room needs urgent attention on a number of small items,. viz., The two pictures do not fasten to the screws but simple rest on them. One night we heard a clatter from upstair to find both pictures and the glass shelf on the floor along with the two glass holders. Fortunately nothing was broken. The glass shelf brackets are barely attached. The towel hook falls off. All of these problems are simple to put right if the screws/Rawlplugs are fixed. I attach a few photos. There is a foul smell in the shower room hinting at a leak in the shower tray or toilet basin. The lower wooden lathe on the cooker falls off. An attempt has been made to glue it back on but the job needs to be done properly. These are all small items which could remedied in an hour or so. Perhaps you would be kind enough to let me know if you are able to contact the owner, else I am more than happy to do so. Thank you. Dr Bob Sharp. PS. I did email this note with pictures but nobody had the courtesy to reply - just a proforma note - very rude.

Many thanks for your comments. I am somewhat perplexed by some of your comments especially the remarks about the boiler. The boiler is a brand new system installed back in 2020 and is serviced on an annual basis. I attended the property myself following your stay and disagree with alleged concerns. For assurances, there is also a carbon monoxide alarm present within the property. My housekeeping team provide toilet roll for each bathroom to see you through the start of your holiday. The flue is fitted is well above head height as you may be able to see in picture 18. In terms of the bathroom shelving and towel rail, they were securely fixed to the walls and never reported prior to your stay and nothing of this sort was under my radar, it was apparent that these had in fact been pulled off the wall and needed to be tended to following your stay. I have not had reports prior or following your stay of any foul smell located in the bathroom as you have suggested and was not able to detect any smell myself when I recently visited. There are plenty of footpaths within close promixity of the property in order to travel to the local village, admittedly one of the footpaths is overgrown but this is not something I can maintain myself as it's a public footpath. Best wishes, The owner of Clove Cottage Property Owner

The lounge leads into the hallway and back door, there is also a downstairs bathroom with bath and a small utility room with washing machine and small freezer. The conversion had been carried out with great attention to detail, retaining many of the old building's quirks and characteristics. With carefully planned touches such as the porcelain houses on the roof beams and lovely pictures on the walls, this was definitely a home-from-home. • "Positive: We have stayed in many cottages over the past years and this has been so far the Best of the Bunch."

Warm, cosy and very charming. Best equipped kitchen so far. The additional freezer was perfect for all our Christmas frozen foods we brought with us. Everything we needed and all worked perfectly. Negatives: The duvets were made of a strange material which although were very cosy, made a lot of rustling noises every time someone moved which at times became quite annoying when trying to sleep. Also were heard scratching of mice each night somewhere in the fabric of the building near the top landing cupboard between the bedrooms. Some electric noise emitters might solve this problem, We should point out though that there was no visible signs of mice at any time or any visible evidence. The rubbish disposal systems needs to be simplified somehow. We are avid recyclers yet there was no facility provided for this. The info in the cottage booklet says to use White Bags Only, yet the internal bin had blag bags and the bin in the back garden had a white bag. Info says to put "ALL" rubbish in the white bag which was to be put out for collection on Thursday. When we put our rubbish out, we noted that the other cottages had proper recycling bags and sacks and boxes for cardboard and glass etc yet nothing was available or mentioned to us. We ended up taking all our glass bottles home.

Thank you for your kind comments and we are glad you enjoyed your stay. We have noted the comments about the mice and have attended to this. The duvet has duck feathers in which are quite standard and have not attracted complaints beforehand, and it is unfortunate you disliked it. Clove Cottage is classed by Eden District Council as a Commercial Property and unlike some of the other cottages nearby, we are governed by this and all waste has to be placed in the white commercial refuge sacks provided and all recycling is undertaken by the appointed Company at the recycling plant. An explanation of this is in the visitors information folder. Thank you once gain regards Andy Property Owner

Just like being at home, comfortable, warm and cosy and tastefully decorated for Christmas too. The cottage was immaculate and considering they allow pets there was no evidence of this at all! We had read reviews before going and took some extras that previous visitors said were missing such as bread knife tea towels and oven gloves only to find that the owners had already put the missing items in place and clearly read and take on board visitors comments, well done and thank you. We did not feel that the cottage was a money making venture as mentioned by a previous reviewer, in fact we thought it was extremely good value with everything you could need from a slow cooker to a very thoughtful welcome pack that included Christmas cake and a bottle of wine, again thank you so much. Com which advertised the property as having WiFi but that wasn't the case. We sent 2 messages in advance regarding the baby items but neither were replied to. Disappointing to see that those baby items weren't readied for us... the stairgate was in a cupboard and we had to fit it ourselves. Upon arrival we were initially pleased with the cottage, facilities and welcome pack, but then we encountered a few disappointing things... the hard floors throughout the ground floor hadn't been cleaned, and no basics in the kitchen like oven gloves, salt/pepper, foil/cling film and salt/rinse aid for the dishwasher. Also the downstairs toilet has a broken flush. It is still a cosy cottage with good facilities, but feel that some easy things would make it great... on reading other reviews it seems like feedback like this fall's on deaf ears. As it's a good price it does fall into the 'get what you pay for' category... better cottages will probably be more expensive. If you're not too fussy about the above items then I would recommend it... it's cosy and only 10 minutes from Appleby with great pubs, shops and restaurants.

The cottage was clean, well-presented, reasonably priced, and mostly well-suited to our needs. However, there were a few things that just needed some attention in the cottage that made it seem like the owners didn't want to invest in making it any more than adequate. The central heating was intermittent, and more than once we sat under blankets in the living room for several hours before it decided to come on. There was no wi-fi, which is insane in this day and age, especially as the cottage next door seemed to have wi-fi. The shower in the en-suite was broken so the shower head sat at a weird angle. There were no oven gloves. No bread knife. While we were there, the mattress was replaced, but the old one was so bad it must have been in need of replacing for years. With a little attention, Clove Cottage could have been excellent, but as it was, it was simply an okay base for our week away, but somewhere we would be unlikely to return.

  • "Cottage was adequate but we've stayed in better."

The place looked great decor wise but felt like it was treated as a money maker where owners do not wish to put any money back into it to maintain or improve the quality of stay for guests. Bedding felt like it needed replacing. Pillows were flat and duvets felt like they were old or just needing a good wash. Simple things were missing like oven gloves, spare tea towels and bed sheets. The flush on the downstairs toilet was in bad condition and the hot water was hit or miss. The children had a cold bath more than once. We had a lovely holiday but unlikely to return.

The only thing that let it down was that the wifi didn't work and the double mattress was a bit lumpy.

  • "Clove cottage is a beautiful property set in a stunning location."

It is tastefully decorated and the owners have thought about the needs of holiday makers, down to books, DVDs and even a nespresso coffee machine. There was a lovely welcome pack on our arrival. We had a fantastic holiday. The reason I haven't given it full marks for comfort is that there was quite a strong smell of oil from the oil fired central heating. There needs to be ventilation in the utility room. It affects the back part of the cottage and upstairs.

The cottage is fully equipped with everything you may need on your holiday and was immaculately presented. A lovely welcome pack was left for our arrival. A perfect 'dog friendly' cottage with wooden floors downstairs so easy to clean up from any muddy paws! Would highly recommend Clove Cottage and would definitely go back for a second visit.

  • "Lovely well maintained, well stocked cottage."

Beautiful location. Peaceful, tranquil rural setting. 3-4 other holiday appartments in a courtyard /car parking area. Good communications regarding how to access and find cottage. Bottle of wine and various other food gifts to be found on arrival. Lovely touch. Outside patio available but unfortunately no view or sun in the evening...however this was known prior to renting cottage. This is the only disadvantage in renting this cottage otherwise it is fabulous and comfortable. When we had to put heating on there was a distinct smell of deisal. According to visitors book this was highlighted a while back...but due to weather maybe the heating was not required. Great comfortable holiday cottage for changeable weather.

  • "Clove Cottage was a beautiful, very clean and well looked after cottage."

It had everything that we needed - the only thing we felt that could have made it better is if there had been a garden (although there is a little outdoor seating area) and a BBQ available to enjoy the amazing scenery. It’s such a peaceful location and not far at all from the Lake District National Park and the little town of Appleby. The owner left us a bottle of wine, some sticky toffee pudding and all the condiments that we needed. A cot and high chair were left with no issues and these even seemed brand new. A lovely stay and would definitely recommend to anyone and hopefully we will stay again.

  • "A cottage that exceeded our expectations in all ways."

Very clean, very comfortable in all ways, and incredibly well stocked with kitchen utensils, plates and pots and pans. You need to accept the fact that there are no shops, pubs or restaurants within walking distance and that the cottage is a short drive from The Lakes but we knew this and more than happy with all of this. I suspect we will be back next year.

About the location

APPLEBY-IN-WESTMORLAND

Penrith 14 miles.

The historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland lies in a loop of the River Eden and is overlooked by the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with the Lake District Fells showing on the western horizon. Set at the heart of the lush Eden Valley and steeped in history, this is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is nestled between the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales, so guests can enjoy the contrasting scenery of these two National Parks, plus numerous walking and cycling opportunities as well as the fantastic leisure centre in the town. Appleby has a wonderful selection of quality independent shops, cafes and delicatessens selling locally produced food and crafts. The picturesque street of Boroughgate, with some interesting old buildings, is at the heart of the town and links the well-preserved Norman Castle with the fine medieval Church of St. Lawrence. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and still today many of the old steam trains wend their way along this line and over the historic and awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct. With the delightful Ullswater and the magnificent Lake District within easy reach, this is an ideal holiday location.
