  • "High Head is a lovely cottage in the village of Keld."

Although small, it has been beautifully modernised so that it is well equipped with quality goods. It was a pleasure to stay in the cottage. There is parking directly outside the cottage and lots of wonderful walks literally start outside. One thing we missed was a garden so that we could sit outside. However there is a small community garden opposite. On a practical note there is no shop nearby. I did a 'big shop' in Catterick Garrison supermarket before arriving but I'm sure that there could be online delivery as well. The Community Museum opposite the cottage gives lots of insight into the history of the area so we enjoyed exploring the mining remains, as well as the waterfalls and footpaths.

It’s a very clean and comfortable cottage finished to a very high standard in the middle of stunning countryside. Great walks from the doorstop and we were lucky enough to see the wild flower meadows. We had a lovely meal at the local hotel but would recommend booking ahead as they are very busy during the summer months. Thank you so much Doris for the lovely cake, a real treat.

Great location for several local walks all result accessible from the cottage. It's quite a distance from any shops so luckily we arrived with plenty of supplies. It's a shame it didn't have anywhere outside to sit w with no back garden and the front is straight out into the road. Parking outside the cottage is on the roadside making it essential that you park as close to the cottage as possible as there is a lot of farm traffic throughout the day.

Lots of walks start from Keld to the surrounding areas & villages where you can grab a bite to eat in some great pubs/cafes. You are a short drive from some stunning locations such as Aysgarth Falls & Hardraw Force which are definitely worth a visit. The owners Stuart & Doris are lovely & are happy to help if required. The view from the front windows I could never tire of, and such as the wood-burning stove, 'sink-into' sofa was a sure fire method of sending you to sleep! Stuart & Doris live around the corner and couldn't be nicer; Doris even brought us a beautiful, homemade Lemon drizzle cake on our arrival to welcome us! The bed was exceptionally comfortable (oak of course), and with a great shower, roll top bath, the bathroom was quality. We've stayed in a few cottages all along Swaledale; this is small, one bedroomed, but this was all we wanted, and coupled with the fact this had close access to great walks with views, this is one of the best.

Booking with Sykes was very quick and easy, and I would certainly book again. My only complaint is that Sykes did not give me the full information of how to collect the key on arrival. I was just told to call the owner to collect it but when you get into the village there is absolutely no phone signal, and isn’t for miles. We managed to track down the owner in the viallage and sort the key, which worked out fine for us, but had he not have been there we would have been stuck until he got back.
