"Thank you for a comfortable and relaxing stay."
We've had the best time exploring Northumberland and going to our Nephew's wedding nearby. The cottage was the best base for this. Clean, cozy, beautifully decorated and everything you need.
Thank you both for the great feedback. So pleased that you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

"Fantastic stay, the owner, David, couldn’t have been more friendly and attentive to make sure everything was ok for us."

Thank you Roger for your great feedback. much appreciated ,so glad that you had a good holiday. Property Owner

"Very well equipped cottage had all facilities we needed."
Amazing view from cottage and in a good location for sightseeing with plenty to see and do in the area. We parked our car in pub car park opposite as parking space is small but this worked well. As mentioned by guests in previous reviews, the sofas and chairs were too soft and uncomfortable. The mattress in main bedroom was very hard. The owner did mention this so we took mattress topper which worked ok for us.

"A lovely area to stay in, but we were disappointed in the cottage."
It is not well maintained in many ways eg being told we would need to kick the porch door to open, a cupboard was broken and therefore unusable , a loose wire protruding from one of the base units ,an unpleasant smell from both the kitchen and bathroom sinks as though the drains need cleaning. There was some mould on the seal of the fridge door . There was also no receptacle for recycling and we used the neighbours bin. No hand soap provided which is always useful on arrival before unpacking. Regarding comfort, as many previous visitors have commented, the sofas are far too low and difficult to get out of. As suggested by the owner, we used cushions from the unused sofas, which had there been four people staying , would have proved difficult. There is no chair for clothing in the bedroom and a shortage of mirrors.

"Unfortunately this wasn’t as relaxed as it should have been."
On phoning David for the code to the door he told me the porch door sticks so give it a good kick!! Also be careful with the shower as the seal on the door isn’t up to scratch and may leak and flood! He also asked that we be economic with the heating as the gas bottle was very low! There was a note on one cupboard door asking not to open as it was broken, the general appearance was that perhaps the general maintenance wasn’t up to scratch as even the pat testing was out of date. The sofas were extremely uncomfortable and as many others before me have said they need replacing. the small sofa pictured in the double room had been removed which is fine but could have been replaced with a chair or stool as nowhere to put clothes before bed. All in all not very impressed.
Just to clear a few of your points; I have never asked guests to "Kick" the front door but to just push slightly at the base as it sticks sometimes, the shower door seal is "up to scratch" ,I just mentioned to make sure the shower cubicle doors are shut properly. With regards to being "economic" with the heating I assured you that a new bottle was ordered for the Monday of your stay. The PAT testing is up to date but unfortunately I hadn't placed it in the folder, so apologies for that.Sykes are in the process of updating photos and I take on board your disappointment of the lack of a chair in the main bedroom. "We had a lovely stay at Dale View."
The cottage was gorgeous and very comfortable. A real home from home with everything that we needed. David was at hand with advice and help. There were lovely walks right from the doorstep. Also a beautiful view and a pub opposite. A walk to Allendale for more pubs and a tea room. Well worth visiting Hexham which is a beautiful town and only a 15 minute drive away.
Thank you Anita for your lovely feedback, really pleased that you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

"Fantastic cottage, home from home, perfectly situated for touring northumberland."
All the facilities you will ever need within the cottage.

"Beautiful cottage, very clean and cosy."
Ideal place for walking and visiting Hexham. We went to Cragside in Rothbury and walked along Hadrians Wall. The only thing I would say is the sofa is so soft it’s like sitting on the floor and some people could have difficulties. David did advise us about this and suggested we put cushions from the other sofa on to it to raise it but it really needs sorting out properly. The bed was too hard for husband but fine for me….everybody is different. Parking outside the cottage is very tight, we only have a small car and it only just fitted on the front but there is parking in the pub car park opposite. Plenty of cupboards in the kitchen and a decent size fridge/freezer. We found the grill did not work but have informed the owner, David, who said he would check it out. Only one dishwasher-tablet and washer capsule left, so take some with you. All in all we would go back and hopefully sofa will have been sorted and same for the grill.

"The cottage is well equipped for a holiday break."
Parking is a problem but there is the opportunity to use the car park of The Crown opposite. Seek permission first though.
Thank you for your feedback Laurence, regarding the parking, I always explain to guests when they call me for the key location that they have the option of parking in The Crown pub car park which the Land lord has given me permission to offer to guests. Property Owner

"Lovely well equipped cottage where you will be short of nothing."
Spotlessly clean upon arrival with all the towels bed linen etc, included. Good base for exploring Allendale and Northumberland. Although the only pub in Catton across the road doesn't open every night there is plenty of fridge / freezer space to take all your own supplies, and a well equipped kitchen to prepare your own meals if you wish. There were only two of us on this stay so had plenty of room as the cottage is 4 berth so also ideal for families. Would highly recommend and is good value for money.
Thank you Peter for your great feedback. glad you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

"Everything satisfactory, one thing: the sofa was horrible, way too soft!"
Thank you for your feedback, sorry that the sofa was too soft for you. Property Owner

"We really enjoyed our stay and David was very helpful and available."
We had a slight problem where my wife " mislaid" the door keys, David was there within 5 minutes and opened the door for us. He was very understanding and stopped for a chat. While we were chatting my wife found the keys in her pocket !! Problem solved, thanks David. Brian and Lynda.
Thank you both for your great feedback. Glad you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

"The sofas springs need replacing."
It was like sitting in a deck chair. We overcame this by using the cushions from the other sofa but it made it bearable not comfortable and made the room look really untidy. The bed was harder than our own but we slept well after the first night. Overall a lovely, well placed cottage which we would snap up the opportunity to revisit if the sofas could be fixed. David was friendly and helpful.
Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that the sofas were not comfortable for you and we have had a couple of other guests mention the same, but in the same instance others have found them okay. We will endeavour to rectify this. Property Owner

"We found the owner David very helpful prior to and during our stay with places to eat and information re the cottage."
We found the cottage did have a smell during our stay which we put down to the LPG gas and boiler, this was very evident on our arrival and stayed during our stay. It was at times very strong and slightly off putting. On the Monday we awoke to no hot water and no heating as the gas had run out. We sent a message to David who did get back to us and arranged more gas and a check by a plumber. We had been very conservative with the heating too as we had only arrived late on the Friday evening and had been out all day Saturday and Sunday only in the cottage on an evening. We felt being in the trade that both bottles of gas should of been full prior to our stay, which they must not of been. My husband checked both bottles on the Monday and they were both empty. We struggled to use the freezer as it was quite compact with ice As other guests had mentioned the cushions on the settee are very low and you do sink into them, they do need some work. It only dawned on us when we got home and sat on our settee The cottage we feel is more suited to summer renting due to the LPG heating as we are unsure how economical this is. It is a lovely well equipped and clean cottage situated in beautiful surroundings.

"Lovely cosy cottage, perhaps a new Settee/Sofa and armchairs as found them very low where the springs have nearly gone, the owner and his sister were more than helpful and only a phonecall away, stunning area and views from the cottage were amazing, would highly recommend and it's a good base for visiting all the historic sites etc."
Thank you for a lovely holiday, also Sykes are really helpful and can't wait for our next holiday next year that we've already booked woth Sykes.

"Before my arrival, David, the owner, was very helpful with parking at the property with alternatives if needed and other local information."
He came across as a very friendly, polite, genuine man. As it was, I could park at the property easily and had no problems reversing out each day. The pictures of the property are a true reflection of it though I still went "Wow" when I walked in. It was well equipped and everything was easily at hand. I really liked the amount of space for storing your things in the property, especially the kitchen where there were extra empty cupboards to store my own food etc. Looking out the back window watching the birds and rabbits or looking out the front at the hills on the left, with the nearby fields of cows, sheep, horses and flocks of starlings was wonderful. The property was ideal for exploring Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland, the North Pennines and the surrounding counties, with some lovely scenic drives. My only regret was that I didn't stay longer than 7 days, so can therefore highly recommend this property.
Thank you very much for your great feedback, very much appreciated. David Property Owner

"Cottage was clean, tidy and a very good holiday cottage for Hadrians wall and this area of Northumberland."
Central in position. Easy to get to and much to do in the area. Recommended.

"Lovely cottage."
Good location. Owner very helpful indeed.

"Dale View is well situated for access to Hadrian’s Wall (the main reason for our stay) and the towns of Hexham and Allendale."
There are many walks from the door, we particularly enjoyed the moors above Splitty Lane with curlews, lapwings, oyster catchers, grouse etc. and the stroll along the river to Allendale. The property kept us warm and comfortable despite disappointing weather. We slept very well, but the very soft cushions on the chair and sofa were a bit of a problem for elderly bones. The off road parking is extremely tight, and reversing on or off is tricky due to poor visibility of oncoming traffic. The property description should be amended since the Crown Inn immediately opposite (for meals and possible alternative parking by arrangement) no longer exists. Overall though a very enjoyable stay and good value.

"We had an enjoyable holiday at Dale View."
The cottage makes you feel at home and welcome from the moment you step inside. The area around Catton and Allendale is good for walking and near many other attractions.
Thank you for your great feedback and that you had an enjoyable holiday in our cottage Property Owner

"The cottage was very clean, well equipped, spacious and warm."
There was more than enough storage space in the modern kitchen and it was good to have a full size fridge/freezer. The central heating was very effective and quickly raised the temperature above the set figure, such that we never felt the need to light the log burner despite the return of winter weather (snow on 3 days). In our opinion the sofas were excessively soft and lacking in support and, having a lower back problem, I couldn’t sit comfortably, so either I sat at the kitchen table or rested on the bed. Fortunately the bed was comfortable and sufficiently supportive. The statement on the Sykes Website (“Off road parking for 1 car, plus additional parking in pub car park”) needs clarifying and correcting. The parking space at the cottage is very short and even our small Audi A1 hatchback, parked 2” from the house wall, encroached a few inches over the pavement. The pub is currently a private residence and one cannot park there. We did hear a rumour from a local that it may re-open as a bar in due course so the parking situation may change. An alternative parking space for larger cars is available at the end of the terrace. We had a very good Sunday lunch at the Golden Lion in Allendale (an easy walk with pavement the whole way) and a superb lunch at the Carts Bog Inn at Langley on Tyne, 3 miles away. For the latter there is a somewhat shorter route across fields and a stretch of moorland, partly avoiding the fairly busy Hexham road. The walk by the River Allen in Staward Gorge is easy and very pleasant (start at the National Trust car park, £2 for non-members). The birdwatching was excellent and we saw a few black grouse and grey partridge and large numbers of curlew, lapwing, oystercatcher and golden plover on the upland meadows; we also saw a number of hares. The round walk up the hill from the nearby crossroads (Splitty Lane) is very pleasant and the common at the top is where I saw black grouse. Despite the unusually cold weather we had a very pleasant week and the cottage proved to be an excellent base for exploring the area.

"This cosy cottage was exactly as shown on the website."
It was very well equipped and clean. The owner was very helpful and gave us lots of information about the local area. The cottage is ideally placed to travel to Cumbria or to explore Northumberland, especially Hadrian's Wall. The views from the front of the cottage were beautiful. We loved our stay at Dale View and will definitely be returning!

"Lovely cottage, very well cared for."
-
"We are a family of three."
It was a great cottage to stay at. The owner was pleasant and informative when I spoke to him on the phone. Parking was a bit of a squeeze at the property but he did tell us about alternative parking places. Unfortunately the pub over the road is now a private residence, so we had to look elsewhere to eat out. The area is ideal for walks and lovely views.
Thank you very much for your feedback as it means a lot. really pleased that you enjoyed your stay Property Owner

"Our second visit to Dale view this year, it’s an excellent cottage and ideally placed to explore the area."
If your looking for a place to relax, We couldn’t suggest a better place.
-
"We all enjoyed our stay at Dale View, the kitchen was particularly well equipped and all the appliances look fairly new."
The rest of the cottage was also of a good standard. The cottage is situated in the wonderful Allendale which we had not been to before, the roads were quiet with some good hills to go up and lots of wildlife about, there are also plenty of walks around Catton itself.
-
"Had a great time here, found the host to be friendly and helpful."
Recommend this cottage for a good base for exploring the beautiful county of Northumberland, the icing on the cake would be the pub across the road being open, however, I believe it will be soon. we had some nice walks from the cottage into Allendale and found a great pub with fabulous food The Kings Head. we would not hesitate in recommending Dale View and will return when we next visit the area.
-
"No REAL off road parking ,no games room, No REAL garden or patio."
All the kitchen knives and forks are a bit car boot.
Sorry to hear that you were not happy with your stay. There is real off road parking as there is a drop kerb to allow parking to the front of the cottage alternatively the pub carpark opposite was offered which is also off road parking. You are correct about the games room which I was confused about as there isn't one! I checked the description which mentioned one so I immediately contacted Sykes to correct their mistake. A garden isn't advertised because there isn't one! There is a small patio area to the front of the cottage as shown on the advert. The knives and forks were purchased from a national chain although good sets can be found at car boot sales these days! I hope this helps to resolve your issues and I am sure you that you did enjoy your time in this beautiful county. Property Owner

About the location
CATTON
Allendale 1.5 miles; Hexham 9 miles; Allenheads 9 miles; Newcastle 32 miles.
The village of Catton, with a pub that serves food, is situated less than two miles from the town of Allendale in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The town of Allendale was once the centre of a busy lead mining area, and many relics of the mining era remain around the area. Catton is ideally placed for access to Carlisle to the west, Hexham to the east or the Roman Wall just to the north. There are lots of walks and unspoilt villages in the surrounding North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which is an ideal location for exploring the surrounding countryside or travelling further north to the glorious Heritage Coastline.
