  • "We had a great week at Weir Cottage."

It was very cosy and comfortable with good facilities. The only drawback was the limited parking which would be a greater problem in the summer months. Anne & Dave

It’s a shame basics were missing, no soap, no washing up liquid, no tea or coffee, lack of china and glasses. TV also very poor, (not smart TV).

  • "Very comfortable stay in a great location."

2 things to bear in mind: the fridge is very small - one of those your nana used to have with a little freezer compartment at the top - so don't bother arriving with a big shop of food that needs refrigeration or a freezer; the other thing is parking - it's perfectly doable as there's a layby on the same side of the road as the cottage about 150 yds up toward the village shop. We were able to park there throughout our stay no problem. Use the local bus service if you want to pop into Ambleside for shopping - much more convenient than faffing about parking etc (and we have a blue badge). If you do go food shopping in Ambleside and you're not a vegetarian we highly recommend Garside butchers - first class. Lovely walks nearby and v dog friendly. Thank you.

Dear Paula, I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Weir Cottage, and many thanks for your positive feedback. I thoroughly endorse your comments. Elterwater and Chapel Stile are becoming increasingly popular with day visitors, so I would strongly advise not using your car during your stay. There are numerous fabulous walks right on the doorstep, and there is a well stocked village shop and some great pubs within easy walking distance. If you do decide to venture further afield, please do use the local buses. They are reasonably priced compared to parking charges, and very frequent. For the more adventurous, linking bus journeys with walks is such a great way to experience this beautiful part of the Lakes. Property Owner

Beautifully fitted out but could do with a few more kitchen contents - teapot, ovenproof / serving dishes or casseroles and a potato peeler please!! We would definitely recommend and may use again.

Many thanks for your very kind comments Sarah. I do hope you can return, and next time I can assure you there will be a teapot and a potato peeler. Property Owner

  • "Beautiful cottage in a nice, quiet location."

Clean and comfortable and well equipped. There is a nice pub within a few minutes walk and a well stocked local shop also well within walking distance. Car parking is a potential problem as there is no parking at the cottage and the road is too narrow to park outside, even for loading/off loading. There are nearby laybys and a grass verge but these were often occupied by walkers and other visitors so had to park in the village a few times. I can imagine this being more of an issue in summer/high season. Other than that, this is a lovely cottage and I would be happy to recommend it.

Many thanks for your very positive feedback Roger. In response to your concerns, it is acceptable to park carefully outside the cottage for the purpose of loading / unloading, and parking laybys close to the cottage are usually free between 5pm - 9am when day visitors have departed. I strongly advise guests to not use their car whilst staying at Weir Cottage. There is a very reasonably priced (compared with parking charges) bus service to either the head of the valley or to Ambleside, the bus stop is opposite the village shop. From Ambleside, another bus service is available to Grasmere and Keswick. Depending on fitness levels, I can highly recommend walking back to the cottage from either Ambleside or Grasmere. The walk back from Ambleside over Loughrigg Fell offers some of the finest views of the Langdale valley. Property Owner

  • "Beds could have been more comfortable, as they were clearly cheap divans."

However, apart from that the cottage was lovely and well equipped, and you can't fault the location!

Thank you for your feedback Iain. You have awarded Weir Cottage a very high satisfaction score which is most pleasing and reassuring and I thank you for that. However, your comment regarding the beds is somewhat concerning. Unfortunately, it is impossible to cater for all requirements and perhaps you would have preferred a softer or a harder mattress, nevertheless I can assure you that both beds are of a high standard and, particularly the master bedroom, generally receive only positive reviews. Cottage as described. Kitchen nice and new. Towels and bedding nice and new. Only a couple of things I do think would have made our stay better. The sofas are old and not very comfy. The TV needs up dating to digital and abit bigger. Not that we go on holiday to watch TV but in the evening it's nice to watch.

  • "Instructions/directions with regards to parking could be much clearer."

I'm very familiar with the local area so know where it's legal to park, but a visitor from further afield would struggle to make sense of the guidance provided for this in the listing. Similarly, the instructions in the kitchen for use of the garden could be much, much clearer - they are far to verbose, unclear and a non-native English speaking visitor wouldn't be able to make sense of them. I speak English as a first language and it was like reading double dutch. Make your instructions simpler and clearer.

Thanks for your feedback Rob, I think you make very valid points. Diagrams might be the answer. A picture paints a thousand words. Property Owner

Suited us as a family perfectly. Comfy beds and bedding great to have bath sheets and not smaller towels. Everything was great and would absolutely stay again. One piece of constructive criticism would be to have a few more small bowls and plates along with some storage pots.

  • "A wonderful weeks stay at Weir Cottage in November 22."

The house is fantastic, well equipped and very comfortable. The kitchen is excellent, beautifully made, and really well stocked. The beds are comfortable and the master is huge (perfect for me being 6 foot 2). We brought wood with us to take advantage of the stove and enjoyed the cold nights in front of the fire (although the central heating works well so not needed!). The location is great and very convenient for visiting The Langdale Hotel / Wainwrights pub (both within 5 mins walk). There is no parking immediately outside the house, but plenty of spaces nearby. Only minor point was the lack of an iron, but no big problem. We’d happily stay again and would recommend to others.

Many thanks Richard, it is really pleasing to read such positive feedback, especially regarding the new kitchen and boiler. Property Owner

  • "Lovely cottage, generally well equipped and great location."

However, seriously let down by level of cleanliness. On arrival it appeared neat and tidy but with time we noticed that it had clearly only received a superficial clean - we debated complaining at the time but didn't want to disrupt our holiday. There was grit and dust in the corners of every room, crumbs under the table, dirty marks on cupboard fronts and down the outsides of the kitchen bin, the bin also smelt bad. We later found a soiled nappy and biscuit wrappers under the bed. On top of this, the cottage had a neglected air - the front gate was broken and had a panel hanging off, the front windows were thick with dirt and in the bathroom the plug had been 'fixed' with a bit of green bailer twine. Finally, this is the first time that we have been to a cottage that did not offer a towel and sheet change between weeks 1 and 2.

Dear Abigail thank you for your feedback, I am very sorry that you had such a poor experience at Weir Cottage. • "Loved the cottage, just some niggles that made it 4 rather than 5 star."

.. The curtains need curtain hooks downstairs - just makes it look shabby... and please put proper dimmable bulbs in the living room sconces - when you try to dim the existing ones they flicker with a horrible strobe effect - so it's full bright light or nothing which is not great... The main gripe was the towels - small, poor quality, smelt stale (used?!?!) and some were clearly dirty/stained... really don't want to have to pack towels - if linen is 'provided' then needs to at least be properly clean... especially in these covid times! Would also have been nice to be able to open the front bedroom window - it got quite stuffy and it's been painted shut...

The bathroom and kitchen are both particularly well laid out. A couple of minor issues in the back bedroom: (i) the electric sockets in are behind the bed and totally inaccessible; (ii) it also wasn't possible to turn the bedside lights on and of. The house is in a great location for walking - we didn't use the car all week! We enjoyed our stay at Weir Cottage.
