  • "We enjoyed our stay."

Having been to the cottage some years ago we were pleasantly surprised to see the improvements made. The cottage is clean, the beds very comfortable, the shower has reasonably good pressure and the wood burner both essential and enjoyable. And when you are lucky with the weather you won’t find a more beautiful view of Ingleborough and Ribblehead Viaduct without moving from the comfort of your armchair! We also appreciated how friendly and helpful the owner was when we needed help with a couple of issues. We have pointed out to Sykes that their listing needs updating to show that towels are provided and that mobile reception is limited to EE.

Many thanks for your feedback. We are pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay at Netherscar. I am glad you like the improvements we have made to the cottage since your last visit. We hope to see you again soon Property Owner

  • "Central heating off."

All radiators cold. We booked both holidays at Nethsgar at the same time. First holiday March 2022, second October 2023. When we arrived in March 2022 we were very disappointed as the heating was locked to 14 degrees. The weather was very cold at the time so we asked the owner to turn up the heating. She turned it up to 18 degrees. It was more bearable but we still needed to wrap up with blankets. We rang Sykes 2 weeks before our next stay October 2023 to ask that the owner please not lock the heating. Sykes came back to us saying that it will remain locked but at 18 degrees. We arrived 7 October 2023 to a warm coal fire in the living room but no central heating at all. When we tried to turn the radiators on, it showed Access Denied. We had to huddle around the fire which caused a bad asthma attack with it being coal. We then had to turn the fire off. The house is a large detached with large rooms so going to the kitchen or toilet was painful due to the cold house. Tried ringing the owner at 4pm. No answer. Rang Sykes. Received an angry text message from the owner at 8.25pm. Rang Sykes again & they agreed with the owner that if we leave the following day that we would get a full refund. We left the following day but Sykes have retained a third of our money which we intend getting back via our bank. We’d been really looking forward to our final holiday of the year & we would of enjoyed it had the heating been switched on but we could not pay to stay in a cold house. We travelled 4 hours for nothing within an 18 hour period. Negatives: The house is very cold, wet wall in sun room, cracked ceiling in sun room, large crack in window in sun room which was there 19 months ago, cistern gone in downstairs toilet & needs replacing. All in all, the house needs renovating & heat to be allowed into all the rooms in autumn & winter. Positives: Gorgeous views, relatively peaceful outside unless the dogs begin barking in their kennels to the right of the property. Suffice to say we won’t be coming back & we’re very disappointed with Sykes Cottages on this occasion. Their terms & conditions state that access to heating for consumers is a must at all times Sykes failed us & have gone back on their promise of a full refund. Awful experience

Many thanks for your feedback. We are sorry that we did not meet your expectations on this occasion. Property Owner

  • "The perfect place to stay if you want peace and quiet with stunning panoramic views."

Easily housed our family of 5, though the kitchen is a bit small for cooking family meals - I expect most people eat out when they're on holiday so not a big problem. We loved watching the sheep, rabbits, barn owl and trains over the viaduct. We tried drinking the water in tea on the first night and decided it tasted too peaty so used bottled water for the rest of the week. Walked to the Station Inn one night, lovely food and service. A great location for walking and exploring Yorkshire or sitting and reading books in the rain (quite wet and windy at the start of our holiday). Thank you so much for letting us stay in your lovely cottage.

  • "Getting there we did get slightly lost following the postcode."

We ended up at Broadrake down the next lane. To avoid this, On the main road B6255 look for the cluster of bins by a gate and a very small sign on the wall for Netherscar. Follow that to its end, through the farm and to the left. On arrival the property had everything we needed. Morrisons delivered our groceries which we were quite surprised by and very pleased. There is a sign in kitchen saying please don't drink the water, so take plenty of bottled. We (as a couple and a dog) got through 18 litres. There was a couple of bottles on arrival along with 6 eggs and a selection of jams. The heaters were all set and locked to 18 deg which was a little cool of an evening. Luckily the wifi works well and a quick search for the user manual of the heaters had them unlocked and set to a more comfortable 21deg. Plenty of sticks, wood and coal for a fire each night which was lovely and cosy. We slept soundly all week. Having said this, we did have to spin the double mattress around as there is a broken spring that was sticking up uncomfortably in my shoulder. The views in the morning did not disappoint. Watching the ever changing weather and the farmers with their sheep, trains passing over the viaduct and ramblers walking by below. There are walks right out the door, from easy 3mile loops in the dale to more adventurous higher altitude rambles over Whernside (6.75m) or Ingleborough (9.5m). It is about 1.75 miles walk to the pub, The Station Inn. Good selection of ales, good food and pet friendly. The garden area is fenced and walled off from the sheep but there are areas along the driveway where dogs could get under if they really wanted. The rocky outcrop behind the property can also be scaled by dogs as we found Milo stood proudly atop of it one afternoon. The shower worked well and kitchen was useful once we figured out how to work the cooker! All the symbols have been rubbed off by years of cleaning. We have both had a really good week away from the hustle and bustle and could easily recommend. It met with our expectations and we would return. It is a super location for a quiet respite and plenty of walking. Message to owner: Thank you for letting us stay, it has been a really great week. Considerations for you: Front door handle inside is very loose & door difficult to unlock. Mattress in left double room has spring protruding. The L shaped sofa in lounge is very uncomfortable. Cooker could do with some instructions leaving as to which knobs do what. Respectfully,

Having stayed many times over the last 22 years we never fail to be amazed by the constantly changing views and peacefulness of the house. Improvements have been made since our last visit which have added to the overall comfort of the house without changing its character. Superb walking from the door means you never have to travel far.

  • "Our stay at Netherscar was amazing- well equipped and cosy property with stunning views and a huge garden which the kids couldn't get enough of."

The location offers complete quiet and unique views, the owners were very friendly and quick to help and communicated well, and the house is sizeable and just modern enough- access to this location is a bumpy but accessible mile long private road through the owners working farm, any vehicle can do it if careful and well maintained, and the nature of the place and area means compromises like peaty water, low water pressure and a fair amount of bugs! None of which matters when you see the view, both from the amazing sun room and the expansive garden. Can't recommend enough.

  • "This was our 3rd stay here - and we’ve already got another stay booked."

We love it, it is so incredibly peaceful and idyllic. The cottage is really well equipped, we only ate out once this time and cooked meals in the kitchen the rest of the week as there was literally everything you could possibly need. We first came when our children were small, now they are adults themselves, but still wouldn’t miss a family trip to Netherscar.

  • "This was a beautiful place to stay, stunning panoramic views and a spacious house."

beautiful walks straight from the house. We loved it. The only negative was that the lovely sun lounge was out of bounds to dogs. as it’s the room with the view we obviously wanted to spend our time there, so very disappointed that we couldn’t go in there with the dog. The notice states that the floor will get scratched, but if you keep your dogs claws groomed I can’t see that there could possibly be an issue. I think the listing should make it very clear that dogs can’t go in the sun lounge. other than that it was lovely, and we got used to drinking the peaty brown water!
