  • "The cottage was functional but neglected."

It was clean and tidy inside and had most things needed. However it just lacked the finishing touches that would have made it worth the money. The furniture was an assortment and simply didn’t match. There were no rugs. The pictures on the wall were bizarre. The towels are old and worn and need replacing with proper bath towels. A clothes stand for drying clothes inside would be useful. The garden needs a good tidying up as it is overgrown and the washing line needs replacing. The cupboards all need tidying up and cleaning out. It would have been nice to have some coffee and tea and other items as a welcome. I chose this cottage because family live in Milnthorpe and it was close to their house but it was very over priced compared to other cottages I have stayed in with other companies. It was disappointing having to pay the housekeeping deposit for this property and not worth it. The cottage we are in now in North Yorkshire is fantastic and cost less. Overall, poor and I recommend the owner overhauls this property for future guests.

Thank you for your feedback I’d just like to point out the property was recently renovated throughout, new kitchen, new bathroom, new carpets throughout, new beds, all rooms decorated and furnished. The sofa is new, less than a year old. I guess personal tastes are always difficult to fulfil. The bed linen and towels are provided by the cleaning company who always get fantastic feedback on cleanliness. The garden has been tidied by the gardener as it had got a little overgrown. Meanwhile, I hope you slept well and enjoyed the local area? Property Owner

It was scrupulously clean, had everything we needed, the beds were extremely comfortable, it had a dedicated parking space and was in a great location for the places we wanted to visit.

Thank your for your lovely feedback I’m glad you enjoyed your stay, I will feed this back to the cleaners. Property Owner

  • "Very basic accommodation."

No cleaning materials, one smelly tea towel for the week, no welcome tray, not provided even the first fuel to light a fire, stuff in the cupboards not likely to be used by holiday makers whilst only one frying pan provided, for a family of 4 cooking a full breakfast would be difficult, toaster only toasting 2 slices at a time too. No shower mat provided or toilet roll holder, just short of some little touches that would make a big difference in my opinion

The cottage was clean and homely. Good location for visiting various places. We travelled across the Yorkshire dales to Hawes and the Wensleydale cheese centre (1 hour). Arnside is only a couple of miles away. About a minute's walk from the cottage is Dallam Tower Park estate. It is a deer park with the River Bela running through.

Some road noise. Minor improvements could be a mirror on the main bedroom wall to use when drying hair (near a socket) and provision of washing up brush in the kitchen. Garden needs a bit of a tidy up. Would stay again.

Easy to find & with a Booths shop 5 min walk away. The neighbours were very friendly too. Close to a dog free playground & with take aways near by if you don't want to cook. Central location for exploring the Lake District with Sizergh castle ( National trust)a 10 min drive away. The cottage was clean & comfortable & had everything you could need except a non slip shower mat. ( separate email sent to explain why). Having said that we would stay again.

Really noisy water pressure on loo and taps, disturbing nights sleep. Bath sheets needed, the ones provided are pretty useless. Garden needs a little tlc.Great location to visit other places.

Couple of things would have been nice: paper towels, measuring cups/spoons, toilet paper. I had to go and buy paper towels and toilet paper which I think should have been provided. But other than those things, I loved the place. Great location for my needs, good parking, quiet. Shower is AWESOME. Bed is comfortable and it was very clean. Also love the pretty garden at the front. Will definitely come back!

  • "This was a great holiday cottage and spotlessly clean."

It was much more spacious than we thought it would be. The kitchen was fab, with every you could need; even the knives were sharp, which is unusual in a holiday home! The master bedroom (with the super king) was a really big room and the bed was very comfortable. The bathroom has been beautifully done and has a great shower. The stairs are a little steep, which could be tricky for anyone with mobility issues. The house is on a main road, but the double glazing is effective. The road has very little traffic at night, so your sleep isn’t disturbed at all. Milnthorpe doesn’t have many facilities but it does have a supermarket, a Spar, a few take aways and a couple of good pubs. The Wheatsheaf Inn at Beetham, a 25 minute walk down the road, is lovely for a meal/drink. Everywhere is dog friendly. It’s a very central location to explore the area, with easy access to lots of places. The enclosed garden at the cottage was great for our wee dog as he was safe, however it’s very overgrown. My only criticism of our stay would be of the garden, as you don’t really have anywhere to sit out in the sun. If one side of the garden was lawn or paved, you could move seats to follow the sun. As it is, there’s one (very uncomfortable) metal beach in one small paved area. It was a pity, as we did have a couple of very sunny late afternoons, but had nowhere to sit and enjoy them. We had a very enjoyable stay and would definitely return.

Very clean and the bottle of Prosecco was a lovely welcome gift….It would have been nicer if there had been some fizz glasses to drink it from. A few things that could be improved on are a bigger TV and instructions for working electrical items. I know the info said due to Covid they couldn’t leave instruction but there was a folder with cottage info in where they could have been placed. The tap in the kitchen is still very wobbly and needs fixing. Overall it’s a lovely cottage.

Thank you for your feedback. In response to your comments I have replaced the TV with a 50 inch wifi enable TV and I have fixed the freesat signal that people have mentioned. Regards, Joel Property Owner

Clean and tidy with an excellent bathroom with walk in shower with a Booths , pubs and takeaways in easy walking distance. Good wifi and spacious for a couple with 2 children. Its inaccurate to describe as 2 parking spots as only one is reserved with a shared visitor spot generally used. TV is too small for the room with no instructions as there are 2 remotes to be used - microwave is old and v. noisy and the wobbly kitchen tap is disconcerting.

  • "Bela cottage was lovely in most respects - it is within a small housing development and fronts onto the road, conveniently located close to the centre of Milnthorpe with lots of beautiful countryside and things to do on your doorstep."

The interior is nicely presented and very comfortable. Unfortunately, our stay got off to a poor start as we arrived to find a poo in the toilet which was not the nicest welcome and this significantly undermined our confidence in the thoroughness of the cleaning. Some of the kitchen cupboards and some kitchen items could in fact have been cleaner, e.g. there was a hair on one of the tea towels and a few crumbs on some of the cupboard shelves, some of the kitchen equipment didn’t seem to have been through a dishwasher for some time. We were really surprised and disappointed by the response from Sykes and the owner of the cottage when we raised these issues, they were unwilling to offer any sort of apology and focused instead on disputing that the photos we had taken showed what we said they did. This was infuriating, and left us feeling neither valued nor respected as customers. So disappointing as in all other respects we really enjoyed our stay. We won’t be booking with Sykes again.

Thank you for your feedback. I sincerely apologise for any miscommunication. My aim is to ensure my guests have the best possible experience. As a result of this review, I have now changed my cleaning supplier. I am confident that, going forward, my guests will receive a level of service of the highest standards during their stay. The cottage was exceptionally well equipped with comfortable furniture/beds and all the home comforts we needed for our stay. The wood burning stove was particularly welcome on some of the cooler nights we were there. The location is great for exploring the Lakes and Dales and the village of Milnthorpe itself had all the facilities we needed for self catering plus a selection of great pubs and restaurants close by for eating out. Highly recommended.
