  • "Having booked with Sykes nearly every year we were quite disappointed with this years holiday."

Obviously the photos were taken some years ago as the garden now somewhat overgrown. The best room was the kitchen which had everything. The two lounges should have said one lounge and a walk through as barely enough room to pass either side of the coffee table. The tv lounge was a bitter disappointment as it was so dark and overfull with dark furniture and being six of us we couldn’t all sit there together. settees were awful so uncomfortable and low. My husband and I are in our 80’s and found it difficult to get up. The listing said off road parking but the owner said in his two pdfs sent to me that no parking on the road so my grandson had to park way up the road in caravan site park. Had a list of dos and don’ts sent which we found a bit insulting considering how many cottages we have been to in the past and had no complaints. The cottage was clean and well stocked however and Thankyou for the welcome card.

We work hard to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable holiday in Carwood. Therefore we are disappointed to read that Carwood and Dufton did not hit the spot for you and that you have given us our first poor review. We know by the number of repeat customers that many people do have a lovely holiday. But, to answer you comments: Choice of furniture tends to be down to personal taste and we are sorry that our choices, including the squashy sofas and antique furniture in the snug, were not to your taste. Unfortunately, you misunderstood the parking instructions. You are simply not allowed to park on the track and village green outside the property (This area is legally protected and we don't want anyone to get in trouble). Parking on the road (public highway) is, of course, allowed (There is usually ample space). We will revisit the instructions we email out to everyone. We are simply trying to be helpful, not insulting. I'm not sure how to respond about the garden. The lawn is always mown. The hedges had all been trimmed a week before your arrival. As a country cottage garden in high summer nature gives us more abundance than the winter photos shown on the website. Property Owner

  • "A very well presented and clean cottage."

The owners have decorated it with a homely feel and the cottage has everything you could need. Thought has gone in to providing items you may find helpful during your stay (foil, tea, coffee, tissues, maps, info books). These little touches were greatly appreciated. The village of Dufton is quiet and beautiful. The pub opposite is charming, with amazing views from the rear garden. We would definitely recommend Carwood. Note for owners/Sykes not to be published... We tried using dishwasher at beginning of trip but items were not clean so we washed up for the week. We are fine with this but others may not be so you might want to check the dishwasher. Taps in downstairs bathroom have been plumbed incorrectly so hot water comes out of cold. Might want to add this to the information. Thank you so much for the welcome card and gift. Very thoughtful. We broke one dinner plate washing up. We are very sorry.

The house was warm on arrival on the Friday. The beds and bedding were amazing. The only little things that were noted were bath sheets in all the bedrooms, as my friends bath towel was a little revealing :-) We also had to put the hot water onto constant, to manage the capacity. Also, some minor touch up on the cutlery draw and maybe some more comfortable bar stools as we did hang in the kitchen ( which had everything we needed minus a wok ) lol. Those present seats were not a winner. However, the pub over the road, the location and the cottage were amazing, It was also stated a TV by the fire, as I think we would have got more use from the fire. However, I’d 100% live in Dufton and loved the cottage. Ps if you want to eat in the pub on arrival ‘pre book’ we couldn’t get in the Friday or Saturday but got a table for 4 on the Sunday. Thank you Carwood and Dufton a much needed relaxed weekend after studying for 4 years ;-) 2 x Newly qualified nurses

We were three generations together for the holiday and the facilities proved to be just perfect. Whilst not in the Lake District national park it was within easy reach and in many respects we were as impressed with the local countryside as we were with lakes. Great dog walking country and easy walking country for all three generations.

Thank you for your very kind comments. We are glad that you appreciated the beauty of the North Pennines AONB. It is somewhat 'undiscovered' because most people visiting Cumbria just head straight for the Lake District. The result is beautiful countryside without hoards of tourists! I needn’t have worried, it’s a lovely cottage in one of our favourite locations, and felt like home away from home. The kitchen-diner is beautifully appointed, with underfloor heating (which our dog loved), plenty of cupboard space and a large fridge-freezer. Being Nov/Dec we didn’t sit in the garden but it catches the afternoon sun and would be a great place to sit with a drink in the evening. Having The Stag Inn just across the green, plus being on the Pennine Way and close to Appleby and Penrith makes this a perfect getaway whether for a weekend or, as we discovered, a month. • "Carwood gave our family an ideal base for a large family gathering, we had 3 generations staying in the cottage and it provided space and facilities for all of us."

Our granddaughter wanted to bake cakes so the food processor was very useful. The cottage was especially good for our pets, we were able to keep the dogs in the kitchen using the child gate. A very enjoyable week, thank you.

  • "Carwood is an exceptional cottage in so many ways!"

We spent a wonderful week in Dufton, using Carwood as our base to explore on foot around the village, around the perimeter via the forest walk and even up to Dufton Pike. Furthermore, it is only a short drift away from Appleby, Penrith and Keswick all in the knowledge that we could return to the cozy, immaculately presented and welcoming environment of Carwood when the cold nights of winter drew in!. Jon and Judy have clearly gone to extraordinary lengths in the refurbishment of the property and it was a joy to wake up to underfloor heating, have breakfast in the stunning kitchen before venturing out for the day, then returning home to the magnificent log burner and the warmth it brought with it. Even when the TV didn't work, Jon made arrangements for a replacement and posted the TV remote so that it could be used! My family and I had a wonderful time and that is testament to Jon and Judy's excellent hospitality. Thank you!

About the location

DUFTON

Appleby-in-Westmorland 3 miles; Penrith 13 miles.

The attractive, unspoilt rural village of Dufton is ideally placed for exploring the Lake District and Eden Valley. The village has a pub, which serves good food, an Agricultural Show held on the last Saturday in August, and is just three miles from the historic town of Appleby. At the heart of the lush Eden Valley, Appleby-in-Westmorland is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-to-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain; still today, many of the old steam trains wend their way along this line and over the awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct. Visit Appleby in July and experience the atmosphere of the Jazz Festival, which is fast becoming a popular attraction, enjoy a walk on the Pennine Way at Dufton, or explore one of the local cycle trails. With the delightful Pooley Bridge, Penrith and the magnificent Lake District within easy reach, this is an ideal holiday location.
