The disadvantage for us, being in our late 70’s and not so mobile was the stairs but would agree with everything that others say. Bill was a friendly unobtrusive presence. Lots of little extras too. Thankyou both.

Ideal for a getaway retreat from the hustle and bussle of life. Well stocked with everything you could need. Even the dogs are catered for. Very clean, lovely gardens would recommend to anyone who wants a quiet week away from it all. Described as it says, small and compact, low door to kitchen and top of stairs, so just bear in mind, we did and managed after first day, my husbands 6’1. Lovely pub a couple of streets away, dog friendly too. Appleby village very nice too, nice shops, couple pubs, all dog friendly, cafes again all dog friendly, supermarket, and usual takeaways, Chinese really nice. A lovely little find.

Well thank you so much for giving us such lovely feedback on Orchard Cottage. It was a pleasure to meet you and also thank you for leaving the place immaculate when you left. It would be lovely to see you again and we both wish you well in the future. Bill and Sue.. Property Owner

  • "Firstly, we feel that the property description and the images of the rear garden are not a true representation and are very misleading."

We note that the property states that it is enclosed and we do not dispute this, however, upon arriving we asked the owners in person whether the garden at the rear was secure to which they replied "yes it's fully fenced but there's a low wall on one side and there are lambs in the field and the famers isn't very great". Prior to letting our two dogs out of the car we checked out the back garden to learn that in parts the boundary wall adjoining the farmers field was actually lower than knee high in parts. This is in no way safe and secure no matter how well behaved or under control a dog is. Our dogs are very well behaved, however, given the farmer 'wasn't great' we did not want to risk one of the dogs jumping over the low wall and into the field. We believe this would be the view of any responsible dog owner. The images shown on the advert online only show the garden where the wall is high, they do not show where it is extremely low and we feel that this misleading and unfair. Secondly, no where on the advert did it state that the owners live directly next door. We booked the stay to relax and spend time outdoors with our dogs and not have to worry about the lack privacy or the risk of our dogs getting out of the garden. Again, on the advert it fails to show that the 'fence' between the two properties does not give any privacy at all. We feel that this should be shown on the advert to enable the person booking to make their own decision on whether they would be happy with the lack of privacy. Due to these reasons, we vacated the property at around 6:00pm on the same day and returned home.

Many thanks for your feedback. I'm sorry to read this negative feedback as it is the first one that we have received in the time that we have been running Orchard Cottage. I would like to mentionm that no contact was made to us from either of you and If we had been made aware of the issues at the time then we may have been able to change your perception of the problem as you saw them. Regarding the privacy issue, we make it our aim to vacate our garden should guests appear and want to use the garden. The fence between us is due to the old dead hedge having to be removed and allow a new beech hedge to grow. During a guests stay we can not be held responsible for their dogs behaviour. Sorry you were unhappy, but you really should have spoken with us during your stay as it would have been in our best interest to discuss your concerns with you and resolve any issues prior to your departure. This property is amazing, it is so cozy and welcoming. The place is spotlessly clean and very well equipped. There was a great welcoming pack of wine, chocolates, eggs, milk and delicious homemade shortbread. We were also provided with logs and coal for the fire. The property had been beautifully decorated for christmas. We have stayed in a lot of cottages over the years and this was by far the most comfortable and well thought out of the lot! It is an absolute home from home, i cant praise it enough. We always find there is something we have forgotten and have to nip out to the shops to buy it, salt, pepper, washing up liquid etc. I managed to bring everything this year and there was no need. It was all in the cottage. Brilliant! We intended to go out on New Years Day but instead cuddled up in front of the fire, it is such a comfortable place. Book it! Audrey, John and our wee dog Jazz x

About the location

APPLEBY-IN-WESTMORLAND

Penrith 14 miles.

The historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland lies in a loop of the River Eden and is overlooked by the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with the Lake District Fells showing on the western horizon. Set at the heart of the lush Eden Valley and steeped in history, this is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is nestled between the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales, so guests can enjoy the contrasting scenery of these two National Parks, plus numerous walking and cycling opportunities as well as the fantastic leisure centre in the town. Appleby has a wonderful selection of quality independent shops, cafes and delicatessens selling locally produced food and crafts. The picturesque street of Boroughgate, with some interesting old buildings, is at the heart of the town and links the well-preserved Norman Castle with the fine medieval Church of St. Lawrence. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and still today many of the old steam trains wend their way along this line and over the historic and awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct. With the delightful Ullswater and the magnificent Lake District within easy reach, this is an ideal holiday location.
