  • "Such a well appointed, cosy, comfy cottage that had everything you need."

A real home from home in a quiet little village with lovely pub. Ideal base for exploring the Lakes and surrounding area. Owner definitely thought of everything including gifts for the dogs. Would highly recommend and would love to go back. Thank you for a wonderful week away.

Thank you, and you will always be very welcome. Property Owner

  • "Without a doubt one of the best maintained and equipped cottages we’ve stayed at."

The owners clearly take the time to keep on top of the level of cleanliness and upkeep, which just makes the stay so much more enjoyable. The kitchen is well equipped with everything that we needed. The lounge and dining area is again well maintained and a comfortable relaxing place after a day out. Yes the TV is small but it works and is not a reason to mark this cottage down. The bathrooms are modern, spotlessly clean and the showers worked perfectly. The same again for the bedrooms that we used, the beds were comfortable and no issues. Nice quiet location and the only passing traffic seemed to be local horse riders. I would happily stay here again or recommend to anyone.

Thank you so much for your appreciation: we love our peaceful Westmorland home and it means a lot when our guests feel the same. You will be so welcome if you decide to come back . Property Owner

Lovely area .only draw back was couldn't yous the bathroom shower as thermostat didnot work and water was boiling hot

So pleased that you enjoyed your stay: yes it is a lovely, peaceful area , and we love it. What a shame that you didn’t ask us to fix it. You’ll be pleased to know that the thermostat was rectified straight away for the following guests…. no need for stoicism: it was just jammed. • "We have stayed in a lot of cottages over the years but this one had the best quality furnishings and equipment to make our stay a real home from home experience."

Very pleasant enclosed gardens so our little old fur baby was very safe. Lovely views over the hills from the upstairs back bedroom window. Views from the garden were somewhat restricted because of where the cars had to park. I spoke to the host Donna a couple of times and she was extremely helpful and friendly. I would definitely recommend this cottage and would stay again if we were up that way.

And, you will always be very welcome: thank you for your kind appreciation. When I’m away, I want to find things that feel familiar straight away: if you’re not at home, doing the basic stuff becomes a chore, and we don’t want that on holiday!!!! The garden is always a work in progress and a bit of a challenge, but it’s also a joy, especially now that the swallows and swifts have returned! We have just purchased a new outdoor table and chairs to make the most of the summer. Do come back soon ! Property Owner

  • "A beautiful & inviting home that is ideally located in Appleby."

Everything was immaculate, the house itself, the beds were super comfy, heating system was great. The house itself is nestled in a peaceful and quiet area, with well cared for picturesque gardens to enjoy. Our stay was in June and we loved watching the swallows fly in and out of their nests of a Summers evening. Throughly enjoyed our stay and highly recommend to others looking for a relaxing break in a home away from home.

Thank you for your lovely memories of our Eden Valley sanctuary: you paint a picture that is so evocative of our own experience… Swallows, rainbows and peaceful relaxation: snug in our home from home ! Property Owner

  • "Really excellent cottage."

Very comfortable and kitchen is well stocked with everything you need. Only one thing we found was the TV is way to small. Could really do with a larger one for the size of the living area. Would recommend this cottage.

Many thanks for your recommendation: we are so pleased that you enjoyed your New Year stay and that you found our holiday home “comfortable and excellent “ . We try to keep it home from home for all of our guests, but sadly, in this case, we cannot install a bigger TV without it blocking part of the window, which we would find unacceptable from an aesthetic and from a safety point of view as this window faces south. We prefer to keep a comfortable sitting area where all occupants can relax and enjoy all aspects of the room, watching TV, conversing with each other, playing games and enjoying the log fire in the winter, and the scents of the roses and the sounds of the birdsong in the summer. …. just as we love to do! • "We recently stayed at Rainbow cottage over Christmas."

Donna called me a few days before to see if we had any questions or needed anything etc. Upon arrival we instantly fell in love with the cottage. With a teenager, two babies and a dog we sometimes struggle to find a cottage that has everything we need and that caters for everyone. This was not the case here in any way shape or form. The cottage had everything we needed and more. The cottage was immaculate and was extremely comfortable. It really did feel like a home from home. Our youngest unfortunately became ill whilst we were here (apologies to the neighbours for the upset crying in the middle of the night!) but because the cottage was so lovely it helped us to keep her as comfortable as possible while she got better. We are already looking at dates for us to stay again. Thank you for the special touches Donna and the presents under the tree. Your thoughtfulness and attention to detail did not go unnoticed at all. We cannot wait to stay at Rainbow cottage again. X

  • "Wow! Rainbow Cottage is an absolutely gorgeous property located in a stunning part of the country."

Our party consisted of 2 adults, 3 children and the dog. The cottage is spacious and absolutely immaculate inside and out. There's everything you need there to assist a stress free stay... the owners had even left towels for the dog which was great as we'd forgotten ours... they've literally thought of everything. The surrounding area is great with plenty of works both straight from the cottage itself or a short car ride away. Appleby is a lovely little town with a couple of nice pubs (dog friendly), a few good shops (one especially for those who like Harry Potter) and a nice walk by the river. The owners contacted us a couple of days prior to our stay and made sure we had all we needed. I'd be very surprised if we don't stay here again... we loved it

Thank you so much for your appreciation: we’re so pleased that you’ve enjoyed your holiday at Rainbow Cottage. You’re obviously kindred spirits and you’ll be very welcome next time you are ready for some lovely countryside and a comfortable homecoming. Property Owner

  • "We have just returned from a lovely week’s stay at Rainbow Cottage as a group of 4 adults and 2 young children."

The house was spotlessly clean and very nicely presented. The location is great, the village has a brilliant play park and we enjoyed the food at the pub. We found it a great base to explore the local area. Things we loved: gorgeous views, well equipped kitchen, nice open living space, ample bathrooms, very quiet, high chair and children’s utensils were really handy. Things I’d improve: The towels provided are tiny! Almost like large hand towels, some bath sheets would be a nice addition. The wifi was very slow and the reach of the router very poor, could do with a better quality router box. We all hurt our shins on the very sharp edges of the wooden bed frames! Furniture while nice quality, is a bit bulky and cumbersome in the smaller rooms. Would’ve preferred a simple chest of drawers and some hanging hooks in bedroom 2 so there could’ve been a bit more space for 2 adults to move around. Overall we had a great week and we would definitely stay again. Thanks for having us!

Many thanks for your appreciation of our Cumbrian escape. We are so lucky to have such a lovely, friendly village, and yes the Memorial Park is a treasure, for kids of all ages, people with dogs and just a gentle walk or the start of a more extensive ramble . We have taken on board your suggestions and will do our best to implement what we can for your next visit. .. we already have the router and the bath sheets. Property Owner

Great location with plenty of places to see only a short drive away. There were six of us on this stay, three generations and a dog. There was plenty of room for us all. If we had any concerns it was simply that the house was pristine and we were constantly watching the 2 and 4 year old to make sure we could leave the house as we found it.

About the location

APPLEBY-IN-WESTMORLAND

Penrith 14 miles.

The historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland lies in a loop of the River Eden and is overlooked by the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with the Lake District Fells showing on the western horizon. Set at the heart of the lush Eden Valley and steeped in history, this is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is nestled between the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales, so guests can enjoy the contrasting scenery of these two National Parks, plus numerous walking and cycling opportunities as well as the fantastic leisure centre in the town. Appleby has a wonderful selection of quality independent shops, cafes and delicatessens selling locally produced food and crafts. The picturesque street of Boroughgate, with some interesting old buildings, is at the heart of the town and links the well-preserved Norman Castle with the fine medieval Church of St. Lawrence. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and still today many of the old steam trains wend their way along this line and over the historic and awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct. With the delightful Ullswater and the magnificent Lake District within easy reach, this is an ideal holiday location.
