  • "Fabulous view and good location."

Clean bathrooms and beds however the level of cleaning for the rest of the house was disappointing. Hanging cobwebs, door mouldings ingrained with dirt, skirting boards black with dirt. The kitchen on the photos looks Ok however in reality was filthy with ingrained dirt, grease and cobwebs on all the wooden surfaces and shelves. Dirty floor and mouldy fridge, utensils such as tin opener had dirt and hairs stuck on them from dirty kitchen drawers. We did not cook in this kitchen. I took photos of the issues I have raised. I phoned Sykes as soon as we arrived on Friday and they offered to contact the owner to arrange cleaning. We declined this offer as it would have taken more than a couple of hours and we needed it cleaned immediately as we expected our young family within the next hour to stay with us for two nights. Sykes emailed after the weekend to say the owner had offered a refund of £50.

My apologies the cleaning was of a poor standard this week. I hope it did not spoil your stay completely. As you state - you were offered a full re-clean but you accepted a discount instead. The cleaning team and I have been over the issues you describe and hopefully things are improved for our next visitors. Property Owner

  • "A lovely and well situated cottage."

Tastefully decorated throughout and a great conservatory which overlooks the coast. Generally comfortable but the upstairs double bed was most uncomfortable. Great communication with the owners who kindly allowed an early check in. We occasionally used the dining table in the conservatory but our mother struggled with door thresholds so we used the kitchen table with no problem. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend (but not if you have mobility issues). If we returned to this area, we would stay here again.

  • "Great place to stay in the Southern Lakes, lots to see and do, very much liked Grange as a place, Promenade was beautiful."

Property pretty much as described, plenty room for us 3 adults and a dog, but feel that the lounge sitting area, and the kitchen, would be a stretch for 6 guests. Compared to other properties we have stayed, kitchen was quite basic but we managed with what we had for the three of us, and great range cooker. Only thing we didn't have was a plug that fitted for the bath upstairs! The location of the property is up a hill, and my two family members were unable to walk up this due to health issues/age, so as the solo driver I needed to take the car when we were exploring even in Grange, parking is all paid even for Blue Badge holders unless you snag an on street slot. Great for dog walking, even with the wooded walk and community orchard right on your doorstep for our older dog and the Prom also. Not quite fit or young enough for the over the hill to Cartmel walk! Garden itself is safe for larger dogs, but wee ones may be able to get out under the gate. Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again or to recommend it to others. Perfect location and fab view over the Sands. Thank you

  • "Yewbarrow Cottage was very comfortable, the beds and pillows extremely so."

The conservatory was lovely we ate in there all the time. The only thing that let it down was the kitchen. It is small and the table is too big we only used it for food storage as there was nowhere else to store it. Mostly it was left in boxes and bags around the house. The microwave was too high above the cooker to comfortably remove hot food. safely. A little disappointing. Were these things no so it would have received 5 stars.

Thank you Chris for your feedback. We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us. We have just had a new conservatory roof fitted and we are now turning our attention to the kitchen. Property Owner

  • "Great cottage, only draw back was the kitchen which was not to the same standard as the rest of the house."

As a family we enjoy cooking and found the layout difficult, maybe an upgrade should be considered. But that was a minor issue really. I could have spent hours in the conservatory just marvelling at the seascape. The lounge and bedrooms were beautifully appointed and made for a great stay. The location to town was a big plus as it meant we had car free days. Also Grange over Sands is a great little town but don't expect a beach. Windermere is not too far in the car, Bowness is a great day out, Cartmel also is just down the road, so lots within reach making this house a great base. On the whole we would definitely recommend this house to friends. Our dog, Finley, was safely secure in the gardens which was also a big plus because it meant we didn't have to put him on the lead every time he went outside. The owners provide birdfeed for the gardens which was great and meant we could watch the local birdlife from conservatory, nice touch, thank you!

  • "We had a fantastic week at Yewbarrow Cottage."

It is a lovely house. We enjoyed eating in the conservatory and spending time in the garden. The bedrooms are very comfortable and we all slept very well. It is in a very tranquil part, so peaceful and relaxing. We were also impressed with the mod cons - Netflix, DAB radio, a very nice kitchen and the kind of shower I dream about. All in all, a superb holiday accomodation - we will be back.

  • "When we first arrived, the entrance to the driveway was tight for the size of car we have - this was more of a problem when reversing back down the drive - especially in the dark."

Side motion lights on the lower walls of the driveway would be a great help - as would a white line opposite the entrance to stop people parking there, enabling an easier turn on the road, the street lights are poor & the telegraph pole at the bottom doesn’t help at all as you can barely see it at night. The drop off the drive on the offside if you don’t drive back into the neighbours area near the garage to straighten up is quite substantial. The glass panelled doors don’t all open fully on the inner walls & most open up onto a radiator (front room) or side unit (back door) resulting in a nervous reverberation as they swing open. The beds are VERY soft, if you like support in your mattress, this isn’t the place for you. My room was set as a twin, not the zip link double expected & mentioned. My main concern & complaint though is the kitchen. As a chef, it doesn’t really flow well, although that’s a personal thing. The lack of lighting towards the back door is an issue at night as it’s very gloomy, but the dangerous thing & 1 that REALLY needs addressing ASAP is the location of the microwave. It’s not on the left as in the pictures shown, it’s been mounted (and this is very concerning & an accident waiting to happen) above a hot plate & solid top above the range - on a metal bracket & shelf around 4.5 - 5ft in the air on the wall. You have to lean over the range to reach it. The metal base protrudes from under the microwave around 3inches & is at the perfect height to burn your forearms whilst removing whatever you’ve heated up (at approx head height for me & too high for my parent & sister) thus potentially scalding yourself & others around you as the shock of the burn from the metal makes you jump back in pain, should you use either of the hot plates / solid top or even top oven situated directly under it - this surely hasn’t been safety checked correctly. We enjoyed the stay in Grange as the location was great - however, we won’t be retuning to this property due to the above issues.

I am sorry you did not enjoy your stay at Yewbarrow Cottage. I have to say your review, and particularly your score, has left me both surprised and disappointed. Surprised - because your 38 is so much out of sync with other Yewbarrow reviews over the last year. Our four most recent guests have rated us 94, 100, 84 and 100. Our overall average was 94 from 28 reviews. We are disappointed because we have tried very very hard to make Yewbarrow a comfortable and enjoyable place for our guests. Of course I will look at the aspects you have mentioned because responding to constructive feedback is the route to improvement. I will not be changing the beds, however, as these have proved to be the single most praised and popular part of our guests stay at Yewbarrow. Property Owner

Outside space was great as the weather was kind to us. Bit stressful parking the car on the drive as cars were parked on the lane directly opposite the entrance and used the drive to turn around which started our bulldog barking. For future maybe put a sign up, not a major problem but very annoying. All in all we would definitely stay again and we would highly recommend Yewbarrow Cottage.

The bedding was very clean and comfortable. There are splendid views from the dining room, and lots of different eating areas. The only constructive criticism I have is that there was alot of pet hair on the sofas in the living room and conservatory. I don't have any pets myself so it did get a bit annoying having to take all the pet hair out of our clothes everytime we used the sofas. Otherwise I have no complaints at all. Would highly recommend to friends and family and come again If I ever visited Lake District again.

Good facilities within the cottage for two separate couples/families especially the delightful conservatory where we spent most of our evenings and had breakfast each day. Overall very pleased with the accommodation, though the water temperature in the downstairs shower took some balancing at first. Good parking for two (or maybe even 3) cars and safe enclosed garden for our dog. Overall a great holiday (2 couples plus the dog).

I presumed that the late check in and early check out were so that the cleaners could co.e in and thoroughly clean the place, I doubt this happened before our stay. The charming Edwardian resort of Grange-over-Sands is set between the Lake District fells and Morecambe Bay and offers one of the mildest climates in the north of England. Formerly a small fishing village, the introduction of the Furness Railway transformed Grange-over-Sands into a fashionable Edwardian resort. Today, the town has much to offer the visitor including a traffic-free promenade, delightful ornamental gardens, golf courses, brass band concerts and excellent bird watching. Just a short drive away are Lake Windermere (8 miles), the villages of Bowness-on-Windermere and Hawkshead, which still retain the charm and character that has endeared them to so many, and the home of sticky toffee pudding, Cartmel, with its famous racecourse and the L’Enclume restaurant, which has been voted the 4th best restaurant in the UK. Other attractions in the area include Levens Hall, with its Elizabethan Hall and world famous topiary gardens, Holker Hall, Furness Abbey, Sizergh Castle, a National Trust medieval house and gardens, and Conishead Priory, a Gothic revival country house. There is also the 25 mile Cistercian Way which starts at Grange over Sands.
