About the location
EGREMONT, CUMBRIA
St Bees 2.7 miles; Whitehaven 5.8 miles
The market town of Egremont is settled in the Borough of Copeland, on the western edges of the Lake District. This bustling town lies at the foot of Dent Fall, with its make-up much the same as it was around the 13th century. The main street opens out into the market place, with the ruins of the Norman castle at the southern end, just above the river Ehen. There are several churches, a couple of supermarkets, arts centre, shops and eateries. Ennerdale Water, nestled in Cleater is the westernmost lake in the National Park and is perhaps the most peaceful of all the lakes. With no public roads running along its National Trust owned shoreline, it is the set well off the beaten track and is the least visited of all the lakes. The seaside village of St. Bees, now the start of Wainwright’s famous “Coast to Coast” Walk, features a Norman priory and Elizabethan public school, as well as a nine-hole golf course and a host of traditional pubs. St. Bees Head is the only Heritage coastline in Cumbria and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, named after the village it sits next to. Abundant walks are available along the clifftops, as well as strolls across its sandy beach. Whitehaven is further up this beautiful coastline, an elegant Georgian port, nestled between the glistening sea and Lakeland Fells. Discover its wonderful parks and gardens and the Beacon Heritage Centre, where you can learn of the town's vast history. Muncaster Castle is 12 miles away, as is the Eskdale and Ravenglass miniature railway, and just over 15 miles away is Wasdale Head, the start of the climb to the summit of Scaffel Pike, the highest mountain in England. An ideal location for touring the western coast of the Lake District.
