  • "It advertises a wood burning stove but there wasn’t any wood other than 2 small logs, this has been commented on previous reviews and when booking I did point this out and assured there would be sufficient wood !"

I would advise the owners to invest in a fire guard for safety. On arrival we found 5 dog balls under the sofa ! You stipulate that the cottage should be left as found, this is particularly hard when most of the cleaning bottles (3) under the kitchen sink were empty. We requested a cot and high chair, the chair was in the kitchen, but we didn’t find the cot until by chance we looked under the single bed to find it hidden away ! That said, we found it a comfortable cottage in a lovely location, there just need to be more attention the detail.

  • "We had a lovely stay in the cottage."

It was clean and well maintained. We loved the location, just down the road from nice pub and cafe, and very rural with gorgeous walks. Our dog had a good time too. I would definitely recommend this cottage and would be happy to come back again.

Some started before stay, some during. Sykes customer service dismissed issues raised.

  • "Great location with lovely views and plenty of walks from the door."

Previous reviews about the decor slightly exaggerated (unless it has been recently improved) as it seemed reasonably clean and fresh. However there were a few issues worth noting: The dishwasher was faulty on arrival and we reported this after a few failed attempts to wash dishes but it could not be fixed in time. Disappointing as we suspect it had been faulty for some time. The property was very cold (early March) despite the heating coming on, with condensation on the windows. The fire in the living room helped but you will need to buy your own logs and kindling and firelighters and bring plenty of jumpers or spend time in the Britannia Inn, 3 mins walk away which is lovely and warm! The shower (over the bath) was powerful but it meant that the hot water ran out very quickly - two 3 min showers and it was done! I'm not sure how a family would have had enough hot water despite it being a three bedroom place. There were no instruction leaflets in the place. Not clear when the heating was timed to come on, or where the control box was located. Had to look at old reviews to find and press advance. Warning if you are tall - beds are not designed for tall people and are fairly narrow. There is also no phone signal inside the cottage (we could occasionally get some outside in the village) although wifi strong.

  • "Stayed at this cottage a few years back but cottage very tired now and definitely needs some updating and carpets could do with a deep clean."

Single glazed windows had condensation on cold days and the bathroom would definitely benefit with some improvements. Great location though.

  • "I have now discussed Polly’s Cottage with our son and wife who stayed with us."

The cottage was cold generally and there was no way of eating the bathroom at all. Most windows do not open to allow any fresh air and became damp. Our 2 yr old granddaughter badly caught her toe on the broken tile in the kitchen. The mop which is left to clean the floor is horrendous and dangerous to use. Cutlery doesn’t match, ironing board is bad and I had to try and iron clothes for a wedding. Toaster only half works etc etc. Generally needs a good overhaul and update in order to charge clients.

  • "Pollys cottage is situated in a great spot, easy walking distance to the pub and convenient for getting around."

It was really comfortable and the kitchen was very well equipped (you need to buy a tin opener). The blurb talks about the wood burning stove so it would have been a nice touch to leave some logs and kindling. The beds were comfortable as were the sofas and we had everything we needed. Lovely little cottage would definitely recommend it.

nice safe3 garden for dogs. And close to a super river for them to swim! House was perfectly clean and tidy. And very comfortable. Proximity to a great pub is also a big plus!

  • "Had a fantastic week at Pollys cottage."

Although the cottage could do with a little updating, everything was in good working order and we had everything needed for a comfortable stay. Great house for a small family and those with dogs, great enclosed garden (shared with next house but worked well as lovely neighbours/dog!) Very useful to be able to park (1 car) outside the house as parking limited in the village. Our dog, also called Polly, loved it here! Would definitely stay here again.

Overall a good property perfect for what we needed. Be even better if a discount was offered for rebooking. Could do with a bit of an updated decor and a few things need repairing, bath taps and shower loose washing machine.

Thank you so much for your kind comments, we will take them on board. We are glad that you enjoyed everything that the property and area have to offer. Lakelovers Owner Relations Property Owner

The cottage has a few little niggles but on the whole was very comfortable. I noted someone previously wrote about cold showers …….just press boost under the stars cupboard (not rocket science as obviously the timer has been set and doesn’t always equal the times you need hot water!) We stayed as two couples with our dogs and the cottage was perfect for that. Many many walks on your doorstep in truly beautiful countryside. I would definitely stay here again

  • "It was in a beautiful position, very peaceful."

The facilities was very good. We did find the seating to be uncomfortable. The last 3 days of our stay we only had mainly cold showers in the morning, even though being out all day. This is our second time at staying at Pollys cottage, and didn’t find it quite as pleasant as the first time, as not quite as comfortable

The maintenance of the property is extremely poor. 1/ holes in the bathroom and kitchen flooring that are sharp and not safe for children 2/ broken chicken wire on the gate 3/fridge freezer that has been broken for over a year and not removed 4/ broken airer - replaced with no warning that someone would be entering the property 4 days after request made 5/ glass recycling box missing from outside 6/ dirty sock found under the bed I look forward to someone contacting me as I have yet to hear anything despite raising concerns at the beginning of our trip

  • "Comfortable cottage in a perfect location."

It has everything you need for a week away and a lovely enclosed garden also. Our only negatives were the wood burner requires a new seal so isn’t really effective and there is a cracked tile in the bathroom that has obviously been glued previously but is a hazard to young children getting out of the bath.

  • "We had a lovely time at the cottage however the log burner did not perform very well."

The door closed but the handle just turned round and round and did not actually do anything. As a result the logs just burned very quickly and the heat output was very poor. Fortunately the weather was good and we did not rely on it but I suspect guests that go later in the year may well be disappointed. Apparently the log burner has been reported before. The floor tile in the bathroom is still broken and could cause an injury.

  • "The location of the property was outstanding and the cottage was cosy and well appointed with everything needed for a comfortable stay."

The garden was ideal for our two dogs as it was secure and made for a relaxing stay. The only downsides were that the single bed was not comfortable for our adult son and whenever we tried to have a bath some water seemed to leak through the kitchen ceiling. Possibly a problem with the overflow..we also noticed the bathroom flooring was cracked. We would definitely stay again.

Beautiful views. Kitchen and bathroom had everything we needed. Was quite cold without the log burner on( we stayed in feb). Really nice to stay inside when the weather was gloomy or to arrive back after a long walk. Good sized fridge freezer. Log burner needed some TLC to get it working efficiently - was blocked. Small bed mattress a bit uncomfortable with springs Would definitely stay again. Would be good to have some basics like oven gloves and glove for wood burner, few basic supplies like milk tea coffee in case people arrive late

About the location

ELTERWATER

Great Langdale 2.9 miles; Ambleside 4.2 miles; Grasmere 8.2 miles.

Elterwater is a true escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A tranquil hamlet with its tiny ‘swan lake’, Elter Water, sitting at the gateway of the striking Langdale valley. The soft valley landscape is in sharp contrast to the steep jagged Langdale Pikes. Elterwater sits between Ambleside and Great Landgale, where at the top of the valley the infamous Wrynose Path is the only way out of the u-shaped valley, giving it a superb sense of seclusion. The larger towns of Grasmere and Ambleside are a short drive away providing a host of options for shopping and eating out.
