Facilities are all you need and not so upmarket that you worry about using anything. The south western corner of the lakes is easily accessible from here and there are loads of pubs around and the well stocked village shop is close by. Some reviews worry about the entrance drive but we had a large estate car and it was fine, just take some care, no problem.

  • "The property has some good features and a few negatives."

Negatives are : Two damp bedrooms, one with a patch of ceiling mould. This relates to a leak 2 years ago and should have been sorted. ; The garden is great for older children but young ones need supervision, in the upper area there is an unguarded drop from head height down onto concrete; The house needs some updating e.g. chipped worktops, black mould on sink and shower sealants, holes in carpets , small old fridge etc; The decked area is out of use because the wood is rotting. Difficult access for large cars through narrow gates, my daughters in law refused to drive all week! The good features of the house are: It's a large house with a big semi -wild garden in a good position in one of the Lakes most beautiful areas. Lovely views from the house and garden; The hot tub was great; the kitchen is well equipped; the beds are comfortable and bedding fine; It's hard to find large properties to rent in Eskdale and this place could be wonderful, it just needs some care and attention and an honest description.

Thank you for your feedback Regarding the leak, this actually refers to different leak which we did resolve 2 years ago, a new issue arose which you notified us of, which was swiftly dealt with. We found no evidence of mould and can confirm that we have preventative paint in place which will also ensure this doesn't happen. The timber decking has now been replaced. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay overall. Property Owner

. Lovely quirky property with plenty of room. Secluded garden with a hot tub. It is like living in someone's home so don't expect 5 star. Some areas do need a bit of tlc or repairs but that never put us off, nor would it make me give a negative review. The road up is quite challenging and awkward. We were in a Q5 and that is about the maximum sized vehicle you would get through to the drive. Also the crossing at the rail track would be no good if your car is low to the ground. It is very secluded, no phone reception at all (suited me), but the WiFi is great (kept kids happy) and the views are amazing. Pub down the road was great, never went in to the village. Stanley Ghyll waterfall is well worth the walk. We will return, hopefully the weather is better next time.

Lovely views. Well kitted out. Hot tub was lovely, even in winter. Owner called ahead and helpful. Kids loved seeing the train at the end of the garden. Only thing good to be mindful of is that wider bigger vehicles won't be able to make it up the drive to the house and will have to walk from little station, as mentioned in info: if I doubt park up at green station and go check it out before proceeding up the lane. Hubby thought he could do it and then on realisation we couldn't, turning around after train track without slipping into the wall was managed, but hairy! We didn't attempt it again! Not far at all to green car park, but ensure all your party good enough on their pins to manage. Linking arms would be tricky as is a track and can be slippy on the earth in the middle if muddy.

The photos do not do the place justice, the cottage is beautiful inside and out. It was beautifully decorated with Christmas decorations which was a nice touch. Its very spacious and we made full use of the open fire. Unfortunately Cumbria was hit badly by a storm on our first night so the power was out, so it whilst it was nice n warm in the lounge it was quite cold upstairs but that couldn't be helped. But it came back on the next night. Actually I enjoyed when the power was out, we stayed by the fire and played board games, truly an experience I won't forget. The hot tub was the cherry on top, we made full use of it when we could and it was lovely watching the stars. Overall this is a great place to stay if you love the countryside like me. There's lots to see and do, I recommend visiting Muncaster castle, it has some great views! We did a little pub crawl also, great pubs with great food and drinks. ! The house is a great size with 2 large reception rooms, the kitchen is big with a lot of storage and a big dining table, this was great for family breakfasts. The living and dining room also had a dining table, which we used on Saturday night and easily fit 10 people around, although it was quite cosy. We used the fire both days of the weekend, there was just enough fire wood and kindling for this we didn't need to go into the extra stash in the utility room. For a longer booking it would be needed. The kitchen was stocked with alot of crockery and cutlery, I would advise to take your own cling film, foil etc as we forgot these. There was 1 towel per person, no extra for the hot tub or to use whilst the others are drying, however Miles did inform me of a dryer we could use. The hot tub was great, nice and warm and clean when we arrived!! We used it both days. Unfortunately the King George pub was closed whilst we were there, but the sign outside said it would be opening in Easter, so we used The Bower House Inn, which was about a mile away, we walked, it was lovely. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the weekend. Small note, take your own toilet roll and soap, there was not enough even for 2 nights.

The cottage has very spacious bedrooms, the beds are extremely comfortable and clean and the kitchen is huge and a great place to gather! There are three toilets but only two showers in the cottage (one in the main bathroom and one ensuite attached to a single room) which when you have a big group staying is a little like a military operation but we managed! The owner, Miles, was at the end of the phone for all our queries and even when we couldn't start the fire on the first night, as we had no firelighters or kindling, he sorted his lovely neighbour, Adrian, to pop round and get it going for us - what an absolute star! The hot tub was wonderful and warm and a lovely experience stargazing in a bikini and bobble hat! At the bottom of the garden there is the Ravensglass railway line which we did on the Saturday morning to visit their advertised Christmas market however that was a tad disappointing as it was a tent with about 8 stalls in it and no mulled wine (what's that all about?!) and the village only has a post office and two pubs, but the villagers were so welcoming. We visited the Ratty Arms which was a lovely cosy pub, and on the way chatted to one of the locals, Anne, to ask where was the shop as I'd forgotten my toothbrush and she subsequently turned up in the pub with a new one for me! (Anne now has a Bacardi put behind the bar because one random act of kindness deserves another!) We had an evening meal on the Saturday night at the King George IV (a short walk away and do-able in heels!) and the Landlord and chef were so welcoming and we had a great night, nothing was too much trouble for them and they even provided us all with free shots - which to be fair tasted like de-icer but it's the thought that counts! All in all we had a lovely stay and would recommend it.

Location is really great for accessing the S West Lake District area. Great walks on the doorstep. I had an absolutely fabulous birthday weekend there with my family. An ice tray or 2 in the freezer would be good. However local pub kindly sold me a bag of ice to chill my birthday bubbly / cool the G&T's. There ought to be a very obvious statement on the property description about NOT following the SATNAV to get there. My fault for not reading the Directions link properly .... we drove over Hardknock pass in the dark.... "Hardknott Pass is known as one of Britain's most challenging roads. This single track road right through the middle of the Lake District National Park, in the region of Cumbria, England, it’s a heart-stopping series of sharp and narrow hairpin bends. It’s said to be the steepest road in England with a gradient of 1 in 3 (about 33%)." Also a mention of the narrow stone pillars on the drive with a suggestion to park at Eskdale Green would be helpful. Our very wide Skoda Superb Estate did make it over the pass and down the drive, but only just. A wonderful property though and I definitely hope to return.

Towels should have been included but we had to hunt for these, they hadn't been left out, unsure if they were forgotten? They were all in one wardrobe folded up but only bath towels no matching hand towels! I'd arrived a few days earlier than my family so could prepare the rooms and advised people to bring hand towels with them! The house was lovely and warm and was very well equipped. There was a welcome folder that was falling apart and gave very little information but some maps and walking suggestions. The location is picturesque and it's lovely and peaceful. The hot tub was an added bonus and was clean on arrival. However after a few days use it had clouded over and myself, my boyfriend and my sister found rashes on our backs and underarms when we got home Sunday night so unsure what had gone to wrong to cause that! If these niggles could be corrected it wouldn't stop me from staying again as the location was good, the house and all bedrooms a great size and if suited our needs for 4 generations for my 30th celebrations with family.

About the location

ESKDALE GREEN

Coniston 10 miles.

The small village of Eskdale Green sits amongst beautiful Lakeland countryside and consists of a scattering of cottages, some farm dwellings and a number of outstanding traditional English pubs serving good food. An area relatively unknown to many Lakeland visitors, this great location boasts a skyline dominated by the towering peaks of Scafell - England's highest peak, as well as Great Gable, Hard Knott, Harter Fell and Muncaster Fell, whilst the nearby stunning valleys of Eskdale, Wasdale, Ennerdale and Dunnerdale provide breathtaking and ever-changing scenery to be enjoyed throughout the year. The valley is notable as being one of few major valleys in the Lake District not to have its own lake, although several tarns are perched above the valley sides. Local attractions include Muncaster Castle, the World Owl Centre and the Ravenglass to Eskdale miniature railway, one of the most beautiful train journeys imaginable. With both beautiful Wastwater - the deepest lake in the country and St Olaf's - the smallest church, amongst the many well known landmarks in this awe inspiring and beautiful area also within easy reach, this stunning location will have visitors returning time and time again.
