  • "This was the second time this year, that we have stayed in this cottage."

That shows how happy we were with this holiday let. the only reason we gave, one mark less for comfort, is that, we like a really firm mattress. We still slept OK, however. The cottage is ideal for two, plus a dog, and has walks close by. Try Caton Lane, it is a stones throw from the cottage, and leads down to Sandgate. It's a short walk to Holker Hall and the grounds are a good walk for a dog. Deer are on the grounds, so dogs must be kept on a lead. Dogs are allowed in the gardens on a lead. Sizergh Castle, on the way to Kendal, is good for dog walking too. If you go to Sizergh, go early, as the car park is small, and the NT refuse to enlarge it. Sue J

The cottage as all the amenities you need. Dish washer, washer, 2 decent sized bedrooms and large bathroom with overhead shower. The only downside but wasn't really a problem is no enclosed yard/garden. The welcome package left by the owner was a real treat chocolate and cakes which was enjoyed with a coffee after 4 hours of travelling, and a packet of chews for the dogs. The cottage is in easy reach of the sea , beautiful walks and eating out places that do great meals 5 min drive or a couple of miles walk away. This cottage as everything I would highly recommend it and looking forward to returning later in the year .

A cosy cottage with all the necessary equipment for us. Near to a well stocked local shop, a bus route, and not far from a station. The local pub unfortunately was not serving food, as they had no chef at present. Just a short walk to Holker Hall, or the village of Flookburgh and one could get a meal. The only downside was the weather, which of course made the cottage so much more important and comfortable! The ideal cottage for exploring the area, and coming 'home' to somewhere warm and welcoming. Thank you Neil & Sue Jones

We were a party of 3 adults and 3 dogs, the cottage had everything we needed for our stay. We were greeted with a nice welcome pack with homemade cake and dog treats which was a pleasant start. We had meals in 3 dog friendly pubs. The local pheasant inn which was excellent and The Kings Arms and Royal Oak in Cartmel which were very good. Back garden is not enclosed, but was not a problem for us and the neighbours were all very friendly. Would be very happy to stay here again in the future.

  • "Although the cottage was nice we felt it could improved in some areas that would have made our stay more enjoyable."

There was nowhere to hang coats at all - hooks on the wall behind the front door or somewhere in the kitchen would have been great. A lot of the crockery was chipped and mis matched. Very limited cutlery meant we had to wash up after every meal rather than use the dishwasher. A mat at the back door - as we had such wet weather had to clean floor each time dogs came in. Putting a mirror nearer the plug in bedroom so can see what you doing when drying hair. We did enjoy our stay but with a few improvements my rating would have been height.

my apologies about the coat hooks. I thought 1 on the back of the front door ,1 on the back of the back door, 1 on the interior kitchen door, plus 2 upstairs on the bedroom doors would have been enough. when I emptied the dishwasher, I couldent find any chipped crockery . I will make a point of examining every piece on my next change over. I will also add more cutlery on the next change over. I will also add another mat inside the back door. I will consider moving the bedroom mirror next time I have my workman in . Thank you for taking the time to comment, feedback is always useful, my guests see things I dont always clock. Pretty location and very peaceful. On street parking but I have always found a space nearby but maybe not right outside cottages. Cottage has everything you need, it is very clean and cosy. We didn’t need the logburner this time ( June) but it was all set ready for us. There a is small backyard area with table to sit out it isn’t enclosed if that is important - my 3 dogs are ok with this. I love this area as plenty of lovely dog walks nearby or short drive- along Cartmel peninsula or High Dam or further along to Bardsea. Ulverston nearby has everything you need and good supermarket Booths. I definitely recommend it and we will revisit again.

Really cosy. Dogs had a great time! We went out everyday and it’s so beautiful, lots to do and see. There’s lots of lovely pubs to! One thing that did put a dampener on our holiday was there the two pubs that were in the village closed for some days and when open they didn’t have the staff to cater for everyone , so we often had to drive to find somewhere to eat but it was difficult due to staff shortages in the Lake District. We would definitely come back , the scenery is breathtaking.

Also every time we used the shower the fire alarm went off outside the bathroom door. These two things need addressing. The leather settee was small and uncomfotable and the carpet needed replacing with wood flooring, especially where dogs are. We found it too small compared to what we're used to i.e. a log cabin. It's ideal for a couple but not a couple with a teenager. The outside area of most of the cottages looked a little tired and not as pretty as the picture shown. Also there's not designated parking , it's first come and we had to park along the road which isn't ideal.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback, the double bed will be checked on changeover, and a note will be placed in the welcome pack regarding the smoke alarm, asking guests to open the window when showering. Due to the size of the property we are not able to have larger sofas, I am sorry you found them uncomfortable, this has not been reported before. The outside area of Herdwick cottage would benefit from some new plants, this will be happening on the next break in bookings. The parking is described correctly on the website, there is roadside parking, I will add some further information to this description, to make guests more informed. Property Owner

It is ideal for our requirements. The walks are good for the dogs. The neighbouring natives are friendly and welcoming - as is the owner! A personal observation: on my penultimate evening the lounge light blew. When I checked the fuse box, all the other fuses blew, so there was no power. I could not get a signal on my mobile 'phone, so tried to contact your agents from the nearest Call-box - a spider's nest in Kent's Bank. The first number I dialled did not take calls; the second one gave me a number for emergencies; ninety minutes later, when I had run out of cash, I gave up - 'though I had been assured frequently that my call was extremely important to you. I left a note in the kitchen for the owner who, with local help, managed to fix the problem before the next guests arrived. The owner has been extremely helpful and understanding. The locals were very welcoming and we ate at the 3 local establishments and walked to a food fayre at Holker Hall just a 5 minutes walk away. The cottage itself was comfortable enough in most respects but my friend and I both felt our beds to be uncomfortable. The lack of somewhere to hang coats and walking straight into the lounge from the front door onto a cream carpet is a recipe for disaster. Luckily for us it was beautiful weather but I would suggest it would be difficult with dogs if the weather was wet. The nice touch of providing provisions on arrival including dog biscuits and home made cakes with a welcoming card was very pleasant. It is stated that dogs are welcome in the cottage but nowhere does it state until on arrival that they must be locked in the kitchen overnight. Therefore, I would question whether they are actually really welcome! The weather was stunning for our visit to Cumbria and overall it was a very enjoyable experience. I am now hoping that I will not be hounded by Sykes cottages as I was last year trying to encourage me to book my next year's holiday. I appreciate the need for proactive marketing but it bordered on the ridiculous last year and did make me think twice about booking through them again and is the reason for the lower recommendation score.
