Clean and tidy cottage, with main road right outside, but DID INTERFERE with our comfort as there is a 30mph speed limit on the road. Really enjoyed staying here. Thanks.

  • "A well-equipped country cottage with scenic views immediately across a country road from the village public house and restaurant called The Crown."

(The Crown is only open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and we took advantage of their menu, beer and wines. We would say to anyone thinking of holidaying at 'Skohaven' cottage in Catton, that the accommodation is comfortable and equipped with most utensils/items that would be needed for a holiday away from the "madding crowds" The Bathroom in particular has all anyone needs with bath and shower. The special gift by the owner of fresh farm eggs, biscuits, bread and milk was gratefully received by us. 'Skohaven' is located quite central to Carlisle in the West and Newcastle/Whitley Bay eastwards. Therefore we found it an easy journey both ways to visit various villages and towns such as Corbridge and then onto Houseteads Fort (Roman settlement) plus Hexham - a countryside town that has almost everything; both for shopping and sightseeing. Hexham Abbey is worth visiting and has it's own cafe .It retains it's own Country park which sits alongside the river Tyne. Southwards from Catton is Allendale Village (quaint but pubs only open Friday/Saturday. Hexham has many cafe's and restaurants to visit and it is only approximately 8 miles away. We visited Derwent Water Reservoir. All in all I would recommend 'Skohaven' cottage if you are wishing for a 'get-away-from-it-all' restful holiday. P.S. The locals are so kind, informative and helpful

Lovely walks close by, local village pubs, cafes, and Hexham is a ten minute drive or use the bus, it stops close to the cottage. We unloaded the car outside the cottage on arrival, and then parked in the pub carpark across the road it was all good. The welcome pack was a brilliant a log starter pack for burner, beautiful fresh local eggs, bread, milk, and local biscuits. The welcome basket and starter pack for the fire were really unexpected and a lovely gesture to start off our holiday, although we didn’t get to take advantage of the fire as the property was warm enough. The bed was comfortable and the big sofa in the lounge was great! The only things that I want to mention which aren’t meant to be negative, more like constructive criticisms are; on the images of the property and in the description it mentions there is a tumble dryer, which there wasn’t and also there are images of a big fridge freezer, which there isn’t. Also, I found the knifes really blunt so I think it would be great if you supplied a knife sharpener? Like I’ve said, this is only being really nit picky as we loved our stay and would definitely return in the future :)

This cottage has everything you could need for a comfortable stay to relax and unwind. It’s not often I return home and miss a bed and sofa that isn’t my own! The welcome pack on arrival was such a lovely touch. The cottage was clean and easy to keep warm. The sofa was so comfortable and cozy it was impossible to leave once on it. There are beautiful walks close by or not too far by car. The pub and co-op weren’t too far along in the next village. Would definitely book to stay again. The only issue if I was being really picky would be the parking, as you can’t really park outside the property without blocking a path. However, we rang the owners and they advised to park opposite the cottage and we were ok there for the week. We did park in the pub car park opposite too one night, which wasn’t an issue either. Again, thank you for a wonderful stay, it really did help with the January blues!

!! A bath and shower were appreciated very much as one of us likes a bath and the other only a shower. Comfy beds and a general feeling of comfort all round. We did sit out once but the lack of a garden at the back away from the traffic would have been nice but in October it didn't matter. It is wonderful to say we really only had one problem and as an old couple we did find the setting of the heating difficult, anything high tec we struggle with but you do have control of the heating which is a plus!!! Altogether we would certainly recommend it for many reasons.

Booking process very smooth. Parking in pub carpark opposite was very convenient: it *might* become trickier when pub reopens after refurbishment, though there is plenty of space. Only suggestion re cottage was that for summer, temperature setting for bathroom towel rail seemed rather high and made the room (and top floor) a bit too hot on arrival (settled down over time with open windows etc.). The Hexham-Allendale bus service was a bonus, stopping right by the cottage and allowing an easy trip into Allendale (and Hexham) as an alternative to taking the car. For those (like me) who don’t know the area, Allendale was a happy discovery: attractive village/town with an excellent independent co-op store, two pubs and a great café (The Forge, with art studios) - not to mention the unexpected delights of the small but fascinating Classic Sci-Fi museum! And Jill’s Catering Tea Room (Fri-Sun.) just up the road from Catton was lovely: delicious food, a stunning view south.

This may cause issues if the pub is sold or redeveloped. The linen basket was full of dirty towels. I did try to contact the number but did not get a reply. I washed them myself in the end rather than leaving them there. The cottage itself was lovely although there was a note stating that if we wanted to use the log burner, then we had to go and buy some. The picture shows a shed full of logs but this is not the case. Very well equipped with everything we needed. Couldn't figure out how to switch on the towel rain though. We felt very much at home. The cottage is in a great location for visiting Hadrian’s Wall and the East Coast beaches (about and hour to an hour and a half drive). Allendale is also a brilliant location for walking and birdwatching. Local facilities are good but there is nothing in the village itself so be prepared by taking a few meals with you if you don't want to drive to eat out. There is a local Indian takeaway but it doesn’t deliver. When we were there , the pub opposite (The Crown) was just about to close down and the next nearest is in Allendale which is only a 5 min drive away. We would thoroughly recommend this cottage for a quiet week or weekend with your dog to do some really great walking and relaxing.

Property has recently had a total refurbishment and as you would expect the decoration is very fresh. Located towards the end of the village opposite a pub, the cottage is located on the main road and passing traffic causes a fair bit or road noise. Thankfully there is not a great deal of through traffic, but with the main bedroom being at the front of the house this may cause an issue for some. On other thing to point out is that there is no access to the lovely back garden viewed from the kitchen window as it does not belong to the property. There is a small paved and gravelled area at the front of the property and a very useful bike shed. Overall, despite the negative points it is a true home from home and provides a very relaxing setting with the views from the front looking towards the valley truly stunning.
