  • "Absolutely brilliant stay, home from home, can't think of anything to fault."

Situated just a 1/2 hour walk from Amblesides pubs and shops. Numerous walks from the doorstep. Would happily return.

  • "The cottage was lovely and well appointed."

Our only criticism was the parking, only a very small car will fit in the allocated parking space

Thank you for your feedback and we are delighted that you loved our cottage. We have 2 car parking spaces so this feedback is disappointing. We are very sorry for the inconvenience but had we been advised, we would have ensured that other guests at Stepping Stones parked more responsibly. Property Owner

  • "No complaints about the cottage in general."

However the WiFi was effectively unusable, which was highly frustrating- especially as we needed to spend some time working from the property. This was mid-described as having WiFi and I did send an email during the stay to which I got no reply. I do feel that a measure of compensation is due here.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback. We are sorry to hear of the issues that you experienced during your stay. We are not able to see an email from you. Please contact our Customer Relations Team to follow up should you wish. Lakelovers Owner Relations Team Property Owner

  • "Great cost cottage with everything needed for an enjoyable stay."

Immaculately clean and very comfortable beds. Great location for leisurely walk to Ambleside or more challenging but beautiful walk to Grassmere. Lovely welcome pack and note from the owners

  • "Lovely place to stay."

Every comfort catered for. Nice to be able to set off from the doorstep and walk. As there were 5 of us it would have helped to have had a larger kitchen bin but that is the smallest of criticism We had a great stay

  • "We took our friends from abroad to the Lake District."

We could not have chosen a better location than Stableman’s Cottage at Stepping Stones. The location was idyllic, centrally located for the hamlet of Rydal, and walking distance to Ambleside. The cottage was well equipped, comfortable and very clean. I’m sure we will visit and come to the same place again.

Would return in a heartbeat. Say enjoying the peace and quiet at the kitchen table watching the deer on a couple of occasions. Can’t recommend highly enough.

Having stayed at Stepping Stones before we knew we would enjoy our visit.

  • "Lovely property in beautiful environment."

Everything supplied that we needed. Only suggestion and not a criticism, needed a bigger kitchen bin for property designed for 5 adults and create an invisible space for ladder, ironing board etc. Otherwise couldn’t fault very nice.

The property

At the foot of Loughrigg Fell, with the River Rydal running by, Stableman’s Cottage is a magical hideaway within the historic ‘Stepping Stones’ residence, once home to the Wordsworth family.

Children will love jumping across the well-known and much photographed stepping stones nearby, and strolling into nearby Ambleside for an ice cream or to visit the quirky Bridge House.

The village has an interesting range of shops, traditional pubs and fabulous eateries.

There’s even a cinema and live music bar.

The cottage comes with parking for two cars and is reached by a few steps and path leading through the pretty gardens to the private patio.

Inside, a modern and well-equipped kitchen enjoys garden views and lovely dining area.

This is a cosy and sociable space in which to prepare meals, chat and plan the day ahead.

The sitting room with its vaulted ceilings and comfortable seating is the perfect setting for lazy evenings spent watching films or reading. Up a couple of steps to the lovely bedrooms and bathrooms.

To one side is the double room with en-suite shower room, and to the other the king size and single bedrooms share a stunning family bathroom.

Outside, the beautiful gardens are shared with other apartments within ‘Stepping Stones’ and the view across to the river is picture perfect.

Stableman’s Cottage has its own private patio complete with substantial outdoor dining table and chairs.

Where better to enjoy a summer supper in the evening sun?

PLEASE NOTE that access to Stablemans Cottage is up steps at the side of Stepping Stones house to reach the garden. Some guests may consider the steps steep depending on their age/mobility. The property is therefore not suitable for those who struggle with mobility.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
