  • "Hill cottage is a wonderful retreat, particularly for city dwellers and is amongst the best of the many cottages we have stayed at in the past."

We had a most enjoyable week away and appreciated the use of the facilities this cottage offered which were a very good quality. For those who do not know the lakes well Ambleside is a very convenient place from which to visit the many attractions available and take long walks. The information about the cottage was generally accurate but I would advise those who are not particularly fit or elderly as I am the hill is indeed, very steep and would present a challenge to walk up, but not necessarily down. The heating system did present one or two challenges for us and having the focal point of the sitting room as a lovely fireplace it would have been nice to have had some sort of fire in it. Nevertheless I would recommend Hill Cottage for those looking for a home from home place to stay.

Thank you for your feedback, we will take a look at the heating instructions when we are next at the house and hope to be able to welcome you back again soon. Property Owner

  • "The cottage is fantastic."

It is comfortable, nicely furnished and decorated, well maintained, and well resourced, particularly the kitchen. We would have no hesitation in recommending it to others. A few minor improvements to suggest are that the hot water could do with being hotter. For example, when using the en-suite shower over the bath the temperature is not quite hot enough. The lightbulbs in the lounge / diner (ceiling and floor lights) could do with replacing with warm-white as the current white lights are too harsh, make the room feel 'un-cosy' and can't be dimmed without flickering. The final suggestion is to consider removing some of the cushions from both the sofas and beds as there are too many to be comfortable. We piled them up on the spare bed for the week.

Thank you for the feedback, we glad you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you again soon ( we will take a look at the different topics you raised when we are next at the house, thank you ). Property Owner

The beds and furnishings were of a high standard and comfortable. The credit at the local deli was a nice surprise and better than any made up hamper, thank you!! From a maintenance point of view, the outer front red door is sticking and difficult to open and close. Also the downstairs loo flush sometimes sticks and continues to fill. These small things did not detract from a wonderful weekend away. We would definitely consider coming back again in the future.

Thank you very much for your feedback and for letting us know about the maintenance topics - we will ask maintenance team to take care of. We hope to see you again soon. All the best. Property Owner

The owners had taken the time to leave a welcome Xmas card and gifts of some delicious goodies which was really appreciated on our arrival. There were also some great Xmas decorations up to add to the Christmas feel. Very comfortable, cozy and homely cottage, spacious lounge with plenty of comfy seating, with a good dining space, and some books, dvds and games which came in useful with a week of rain. Nice little conservatory but far too cold to sit in at this time of year. Well equip kitchen, we brought allsorts to cook Xmas Dinner but it wasn't needed as the kitchen had everything you could need. Nice bedrooms, really comfortable beds and bonus having an ensuite, making plenty of bathrooms and toilets in the property, which is always handy. We stay in Ambleside every year and would definitely return to this cottage in the future.

  • "I had a really wonderful stay in Hill Cottage."

You immediately feel at home here. The location is perfect, just a short walk into town but still so quiet and peaceful (you can hear the occasional owl at night). It’s so easy to get the train from London and then a bus from Windermere - the journey was seamless and so quick. No need to come with a car, especially because you can walk straight out onto the mountains from the cottage, or get a bus to Coniston or the Langdales. Hill Cottage is wonderfully warm and comfortable and the kitchen has everything you could possibly need. The beds are ridiculously comfortable with good quality linen, and the modern bathrooms are spotlessly clean with an amazing power shower (and also a bath) - perfect after a day walking in the mountains. It is tastefully furnished and I loved the thoughtful design, especially the cows! Ambleside is such a great place to base yourself in the Lake District, with inspiring walks and lots of great pubs and restaurants, and I can’t wait to visit Hill Cottage again - it’s like home-from-home. Thank you for a fantastic stay.

Close enough to stroll into Ambleside town or Waterhead or but far enough out to feel peaceful. We enjoyed sitting out the front on sunny days. The only negative for us was that the bed in the master room was hard and uncomfortable, We hope the owners will change this as we would love to stay again. We discovered a great new cafe with beautiful views near Stock Ghyll Force waterfall which is worth the 15 minute uphill walk from the property.

The cottage is really comfortable, nicely furnished, and well equipped. Despite the other guest reviews we find all the mattresses to be really comfortable :-) Our only, very minor, issue was the drippy guttering above the bedroom window which kept us awake when it had rained (which it did quite a lot of in the night - but no surprises for the Lakes!). If you are a light sleeper and like to sleep with an open window you might want to pack some ear plugs Its a really lovely cottage and one of our favourite holiday stays.

This stay we weren’t so well blessed with the weather but when you do have dry bright evenings, being able to sit on the front terrace with views over the Lakes is a fab way to end the day. Having parking outside the property is a big plus as Ambleside is only a short 5 min walk away. It’s a great location to numerous walks of you didn’t want to use the car. We found the cottage extremely clean with everything that you would want. The view from the patio is lovely, very convenient for all Ambleside has to offer but away from the noise of the town. The only thing that could be improved is the bed in the main bedroom. It is very hard and uncomfortable. The owners have put a mattress topper on the bed but unfortunately this hasn’t eased the problem. We got round this and added extra duvets under the sheet, which helped a bit. I notice that other visitors have also pointed this out. Shame because I would have awarded 5 stars but for this. Having said that we would stay again.

It’s in a wonderful location with a very short walk into Ambleside. Great to have the parking space. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend or come back again. My only gripe, as mentioned by another reviewer, is that the mattress on the main bed is exceptionally hard (it needs a mattress topper or replacing!). My husband likes a firm mattress but this was even too much for him - I ended up with a stiff neck even though the pillows were comfortable. Apart from that I would rate it well above the normal standard of accommodation.

The gift, from the owners, of a voucher to spend in the local delicatessen was so thoughtful and much appreciated. We had some wonderful walks from the doorstep, and it is worth noting that the walk up the hill from the town is a good way to burn up a few calories. The off street parking is definitely a bonus and the only time we took the car out was to travel to Keswick to park up and walk the wonderful Railway Path to Threlkeld and to visit our favourite pub, The Horse and Farrier. It’s very much a home from home. We stayed with a 5 and 1 year old (we had no issue with our own travel cot fitting in either of the bedrooms) so the smart tv with access to Netflix, prime, iPlayer etc was appreciated, along with the plumed in water/ice dispenser on hot days. We asked for new sheets/towels for our second week twice, before and during the holiday and thank you for providing these, but it would have been good to know that it was going to happen rather than leaving us in limbo (no phone call as promised or e-mail). I also spoke to Lakelovers about a lack of basic washing up materials (sponge, washing up liquid, clean cloth, dish washer tablets) in the kitchen, but this problem was ignored. These had all been there in the same property the previous year, so we were rather caught out by them being missing. Nothing major and we coped fine, but the lack of communication was a shame. • "We were very happy with the cottage and the location."

My issue was with Lakelovers. I booked 2 weeks and informed the company that I was bringing different family members in each week ( the holiday weeks were a gift ) and therefore requested a change of linen and towels after the first week. I was assured this would happen. I duly stripped the beds on the Saturday morning after the first week only to return on Sunday with my other family members to find the cottage as I left it. After making up the beds with the dirty linen I contacted Lakelovers ( fortunately their office was close by) on Monday and had fresh linen delivered which I used to make up the beds AGAIN. I understand that mistakes happen but surely a stay of a fortnight would have ordinarily generated a change of towels and bedding halfway through anyway , especially since there were no drying facilities for that amount of linen etc? The bin in the downstairs toilet hadn’t been emptied and was full of dirty tissues. Mrs C Airley

Good Afternoon Mr and Mrs Airley, Thank you for your recent feedback regarding Hill Cottage, we are glad to hear you enjoyed the cottage however disappointed to hear your comments regarding the linen and your new view on Lakelovers. When COVID started we lost a lot of housekeepers and when we re-opened our properties last year many housekeepers did not and still do not feel comfortable going into a property when guests are still in residence. Therefore, we stopped mid-week cleans due to this reason plus many other guests also felt the same and did not want to be intruded. Unfortunately, I can find no request for the mid-week linen change on our system or from our Housekeeping team. Had we received such request we would have made sure at least a linen and towel change drop was arranged. I am not sure if it was a miss communication your side or our side or an error but our Housekeeping team did not get such request and therefore this is the reason no linen was dropped off. We are otherwise glad this could be resolved with fresh linen on the Monday morning, but we are sorry for the inconvenience. Kind Regards, Lakelovers Property Owner

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
