"Very happy with this cottage accommodation and we’d definitely book again for being located near to Hawes"
-
"Lovely cottage in a good position."
The super king-size bed was very, very comfortable. Kitchen was well equipped. The enclosed yard was nice and secure for our dogs.
-
"We enjoyed our recent stay at Hillside beds very comfortable clean and cosy our shower room was perfect but the bath in the above bedroom had been problematic so our friends used ours, I noticed a water stain on the ceiling so guess water has been leaking over the bath previously."
Plenty of utensils and nice warm towel rails, would book again.
-
"We had a lovely stay with everything we needed Thank you ."
-
"Lovely property in a fantastic location, very well equipped and clearly much loved by the owner."
We enjoyed every minute of our stay. Hawes fish and chips from the chippy at the bottom of the hill simply the best we’ve ever tasted — amazing!!!
-
"We had a lovely stay in Hillside View."
Perfectly situated in the peaceful village of Gayle, but an easy stroll into Hawes. Parking was not a problem on the road close by. The house was clean and well equipped. The beds were comfortable and the master bedroom is incredibly spacious. Great that there are 2 bathrooms. We would definitely book again.
-
"A lovely property that is clearly loved and we loved it , very comfortable and fully equipped."
If it had a hot tub it would be a perfect place 10 We will be back
-

"On entering the cottage I went to turn the light on, unfortunately the rocker part of the switch fell of onto the floor, I contacted the owner immediately, and was told an electrician should have replaced the switch before we arrived, but no arrangements were made for the work to be done during our stay, we would have been happy for the electrician to come whilst we were in, or could have left the key in the key safe."
THE KITCHEN Some of the reviews describe the units as “tired” I disagree, apart from two of the plinths need realigning or replacing, the wood worksurface has sustained some damage over time, the valve on the hot tap was leaking, and the water has penetrated the wood, which has been mentioned in previous comments. THE LOUNGE A good-sized lounge, mould was found on the wall near the door to the rear yard, a regular spray with something like “HG Mould Spray” would help to control it, but the damp needs attention, as others have noted we found the heating inadequate for the winter months, some mention of being able to “boost” the heating, but I was unable to get the Hive controlled radiators up to a reasonable temperature, I realise we could have purchased logs for the stove, but I regard a fire as cosmetic and not essential, and doesn’t help the bedrooms. Shower/Bathrooms, Both sinks in the bath/shower rooms had difficulty draining away, not necessarily a problem, but the overflow will be compromised should anyone “forget” they’ve left a tap on, also there was a leak under the sink in the shower room, which was causing damp, and the delaminating of the furniture panel the cupboard was constructed of. To sum up a once exceptional cottage, in need of some attention, perhaps Sykes should employ a “secret shopper” who could give a thorough report, on some of the cottages on their books.
Thank you so much for taking the time to provide this detailed feedback. All has been noted and most has already been addressed! We hope you had a fabulous stay and do hope you will come back soon. Property Owner

"We had a lovely stay at the cottage for a long weekend."
It’s really comfortable and well equipped with good size rooms and nice bathrooms. Parking nearby was easy and the location is great for dog walks, the local village pubs and amenities. I’d definitely recommend.
-
"Nov 2023 - had a fab week in this super cottage."
Really comfy and homely . Very warm although cold out didn't need the heating on. My 7 yr old Grandson called it a mansion. 6 of us and 2 dogs enjoyed this cosy cottage. The kitchen has everything you would need. Hawes is beautiful with many walks and days off exploring even went on the railway over the viaduct. The creamery is worth a visit 5 min walk. 10 mins into lovely Hawes. A superb place will visit again. Thank you

"Had a great time."
Perfect base for visiting many places around the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbria and beyond

"We had an enjoyable stay at Hillside View Holiday Cottage."
The location was good being just a ten minute walk into Hawes. Although there's no parking outside the cottage, there is plenty of spaces to park just a few minutes walk away after unloading. As stated in previous reviews, the lounge is a little cramped due to unnecessary furniture, the sink in the upstairs bathroom is slow to drain away. Also, the outside space is a little dull.
Thanks for your feedback! We've taken on board your note about the garden and carried out some works. The lounge has been designed so that 6 adults can sit comfortably - hopefully you also found it to be comfortable and homely!! Property Owner

"There was a strong drain smell when we arrived that got worse when the toilets were flushed."
When I had a shower the next day the smell disappeared and didn't come back. Might be worth checking. We didn't use the dishwasher and couldn't find a plug for the sink. We managed to find a way to keep the water in, a half filled mug on th outlet. Everything else was great, thank you very much.
Thank you for your feedback! Around the time of your visit there were issues with the mains drainage, which were quickly resolved and happily haven't returned. Regarding the kitchen sink, there is actually a collapsable washing up bowl under the sink! Property Owner
-
"Fitted the bill for what we required."
-
"The property is showing need for an overhaul."
The courtyard is poorly maintained just weeds in the planted area. Unfortunately some dog waste on arrival too. Shame it’s not loved.
Thanks for your feedback - we will definitely take a look at the garden and give it some love! Property Owner
-
"Lovely property."
Well equipped kitchen. Make sure you take essentials like washing liquid, dishwasher tabs etc. We had a couple of questions for the owner and communication was good.

"Parking is awkward with no possibility of parking at the house other than briefly to load/unload."
The closest parking is on street about 50m away. In busy summer season parking could be very difficult. The house is potentially nice but needs maintenance / upgrades. The large top floor bed is 2 single foam mattresses joined together. 1 is extremely soft. The top floor bathroom basin was blocked (the owner, when contacted about this, said there was nothing they could do about it to make this basin useable) and there was a strong drains smell often in this room making it mostly unusable. It would have been nice if a couple of bags of logs was provided for the log burner stove. Dining arrangements are poor. The table is tiny and there is very little space around it. The kitchen sink leaked so badly that water ran out of the cupboard beneath onto the kitchen floor. The boiler in a cupboard in one of the bedrooms is so noisy that it was impossible to sleep in there. The lounge radiator gave out very little heat meaning the room was always much colder than the rest of the house. Location is good just on the edge of Hawes a few minutes walk from the town centre.
We do make it clear in the listing that there is no parking outside the cottage, as it blocks our neighbour's drive. This is a small hamlet in the Yorkshire Dales, so think quaint narrow streets . There is ample parking about a 30 second walk away - this doesn't get any busier in the summer season, it is always easy to park here - and you can pull up in front of the cottage to load and unload the car. The superking bed is two single memory foam mattresses with a thick memory foam topper overlaying them both. We find this to be incredibly comfortable - as have many of our reviewers! Unfortunately at the time of this visit, there was an issue with the mains drainage outside the cottage, which was being dealt with by Yorkshire Water, but which caused a slight smell in the house. This has now been resolved. The top floor sink is useable, just slightly slow to drain. Regarding dining, there is room for 6 at the table (we have tested this frequently with 6 adults!!). Hillside is a cottage, not a mansion, so expect cosy not sprawling. We were not informed about the leak in the kitchen, so could not do anything to address this. The living room radiator is set to the highest temp in the house and is large. There is also a log-burner in there, which we always light as soon as we get up. Logs are readily available down in Hawes. Property Owner

"We had a lovely stay at Hillside View, spacious, clean and very well equipped."
The bed was super comfortable and the shower hot and powerful. We enjoyed lots of walks straight from the door and cosying up in front the log burner in the evening. One of our highlights was seeing red squirrels fro the bedroom window. Thank you
Thank you for your lovely feedback - please do come and stay again!! Property Owner
-
"There is damp in various areas of the house, not pretty, paint coming off on upstairs bathroom Velox, hole in the wall in same room, drains blocked, which wasn't her fault but darnt have a bath."
Front door sticks....It just needs some time to fresh it up
Thanks for the feedback - the damp was being caused by a leaking drain pipe which has now been resolved! As has the issue with the mains outside the cottage. Property Owner

"We were very happy with our stay the place was clean, well equipped the beds ..."
We were very happy with our stay the place was clean, well equipped the beds were comfy, sadly our stay was cut short due to 1 of the dogs being ill but enjoyed the time we had there, the surrounding countryside and the village of gayle was beautiful we virtually stepped out the door to the river crossed over the bridge and you have many walking routes, would definitely return to hillside view and would highly recommend

"Booked for 5 nights the cottage is a beautiful building in a fantastic location."
Some wonderful walks. Beds werre comfortable all bedding and towels provided. Has netflix, Internet etc. Lovely big powerful shower and Cottage lovely and warm. I would advise taking logs and firelighters. Cottage has alot of positives. Some negatives there was black mould on bedroom ceiling, backdoor and around windows. Dead insects stuck to blinds when you closed them. Dirty oven and trays. Did raise this with sykes and they asked for photos which we provided we were offered 20% refund of booking cost we either accepted or not as case would be closed. The owner was aware of tthe mould becsuse they had a leak in the roof but they didnt want to cancel our booking we were told. Shame there were these issues as the Cottage was a good size with lots of amenities. Dont be put off to book the cottage as its in a lovely area, a good size and lots of places to visit, these problems can be rectified hopefully.
For clarity, the weather had been particularly viscious and we had experienced an active leak in the roof, which had caused a small amount of mould in one corner of one bedroom. We didn't want to cancel the booking based on something as small as this. These issues have now been resolved. Property Owner

"Property is great but parking is a nightmare."
-
"Amazing property, presented extremely well."
Location is perfect for walking, quiet but only 10 minutes walk to the centre of Hawes. I have never written a review but I was that impressed I felt the owner of the property deserved the credit. Thanks for a fantastic holiday, it made our week having such a great cottage.
-
"Lovely cottage exactly as advertised."
Great facilities and great location. I would recommend this cottage to friends and family.
-
"A lovely comfortable cottage with modern facilities and equipment."
Suitable for 4 adults or a family of 4. Beds and bedding too quality. Convenient courtyard enclosed garden. Parking alittle away but manageable. The only downside was that Dining table set up wasn’t very comfortable. Would stay again - lovely village.
-
"The cottage is warm and cosy with a totally enclosed courtyard."
The beds are very comfortable with lovely white linen. Home from home with great walks straight from the front door!
-
"Had a lovely stay at the cottage."
Very comfortable and clean. The only disadvantage was the parking of cars. For loading and unloading you could park outside cottage which was great. but we had to park the two cars some distance away on the main road going down to Hawes as there was nothing closer to cottage. However it would not stop us staying at Hill View again and we hope to be back one day.
-
"A lot of damp patches in various rooms The bedrooms were great but downstairs ..."
A lot of damp patches in various rooms The bedrooms were great but downstairs living area was not good for six Not being able to park outside when poor weather is a big disadvantage Not being able to sit 4 at a table especially when it states suitable for 6

"Lovely cottage just a short walk from Hawes."
Well equipped and very clean, cosy and warm. Owner was just a message away for any help that may of been needed.would certainly recommend the cottage for a stay in that part of Yorkshire.
-
"It was a lovely and cosy cottage!"
There was 4 of us and 2 dogs and it was really suited to that. Love the back yard space. Beds were very comfy too!
-
"Very comfortable stay in a very pretty village"
-
"Everyone was so friendly, parking was not far away."
Wonderful views from bedrooms. Lovely walk all around. Need shopping try the village, in the evening wonderful public houses serving delicious food. Cheese heaven at creamery not to far from the cottage.
-
"The cottage was as listed on line, we were a party of four adults and one infant, plus a small dog."
The bedrooms and bathrooms were absolutely fine, we did find it cramped in the kitchen when eating, but we were aware of this before we went. Parking wasn't too bad, we parked in Gayle Road and left the cars there all week, walked from the cottage every day.
-
"Everything was great but maybe a boot storage outside the front door would have saved Is leaving them in the house, other than that was great ."
-
"The cottage was beautiful and in a prime location."
The welcome/info book was a brilliant touch. Excellent all round!!
-
"A lovely cottage in a beautiful little Dales village."
Very comfortable and well equipped. As other guests have said, downstairs is small for 6 people but this wasn’t a problem, apart from the lack of a porch for muddy boots and wet coats. Excellent communication with Clare, the owner, both before and during our stay. We would happily book again.
-
"What a beautiful cottage situated in a delightful locality."
The cottage has a touch of luxury to it as described and is so comfortable. I have a pressured career and I de compressed quickly due in no small part to this lovely property. If you like walking then you are spoilt for choice, there is so much on the doorstep to enjoy. Within an hours walk is Hawdraw Force which is something to behold. Would definitely stay again, a beautiful cottage !
-
"The cottage was very nice we all enjoyed it greatly."
It was ideal location just a 5-10 minute walk into Hawes. The only thing I would say is that two of the beds are put you up and not as comfortable as fixed beds for adults. Saying that the two double beds are very comfortable. I would stay here again.
-
"Great place to stay."
Parking is a little difficult as you need to find on road parking nearby. We never had a problem even though we drive a van. Kitchen is well equipped and stocked with glasses and cups. Bed very comfortable.
-
"Excellent cottage in a lovely location."
-
"Had a lovely holiday in a pleasant cottage."
We knew all along from previous guest reviews that there's not a great deal of room downstairs (for 4 adults and 2 children) and this was indeed the case. However, it didn't affect our enjoyment given the time of year. Minor quibble: very noisy fridge-freezer.
-
"Very comfortable cottage that catered for all our requirements and within a short stroll from Hawes."
Ideally located for some amazing walks. Would be happy to stay again in the future.
-
"Great location with walks from the doorstep, Aysgill Falls only a short walk and with all the rain we've had very dramatic."
Good base to explore the Yorkshire Dales in all directions and a short walk to Hawes centre. Very comfy beds in cottage and Log Burner was used a lot unfortunately on our holiday in June! The enclosed back yard / garden ideal for our dog with no escape routes and a pleasant place to seat I can imagine in the sunshine. Would rent again for sure.
-
"This cottage was well equipped and very spacious upstairs but downstairs was very crowded for 4 and would be pretty uncomfortable for more."
The heating was not on and the instructions about this were out of date. It took us a couple of days to get heating working and then only manually. Parking was not particularly easy to find nearby. Overall the cottage was clean but downstairs needed some attention. A lovely location for Hawes and for walking locally. Great places to eat in Hawes. Gayle and Hawes both very interesting.
-
"Lovely clean, warm and comfortable cottage."
The facilities were plenty. Lots of little essential items in the kitchen that were really useful and welcome on arrival. Seldom get that. Enjoyed the views from the cottage windows. Well positioned away from the parking difficulty that Hawes can be but very walkable distance to the village. The kingsize bed was uncomfortable despite a mattress top. Lots of people of different weights sleeping in the same place made a Yorkshire Dale style "bridge" in the middle. Our only moan really. Would recommend the cottage.
-
"Wonderful cottage, the luxurious finish made this cottage feel extra special."
The location is perfect with Hawes and loads of walks from the door. Had no trouble parking. Will visit again.
-
"Lovely location and comfortable rooms with well equipped kitchen."
Needed more toilet rolls but otherwise great. Happily go again.
-
"The whole family enjoyed this cottage, it's very clean and comfortable and provides everything to give you a home from home experience."
We would definitely book this cottage again and recommend to friends and family.
-
"Lovely, comfortable cottage equipped with everything you could need."
Great location a short walk into Hawes with some great walks from the doorstep. We'll certainly be back!
-
"The drawback is that you cannot park outside the cottage when every other ..."
The drawback is that you cannot park outside the cottage when every other property can, this is a public road so it needs addressing
Thank you for your feedback. To clarify, guests are unable to park directly in front of the cottage door, as this would block our neighbour's drive. It is however possible to park temporarily by the front door while you load and unload the car. There is ample space on the roads around the cottage to park, all of which is free. Gayle is a small hamlet in the Dales, so finding a space is never an issue! Property Owner

"This is a beautiful cottage."
I have visited the Yorkshire Dales for decades since being a child, and have stayed in all sorts of hotel and cottage accommodation in this time. Hillside View is a perfect retreat in Gayle easy walking distance to Hawes, quiet, clean, great amenities, everything that you need for a home from home break. Owner was extremely responsive and kind when I was emailing a few questions, and I just felt like all concerned really cared that we had a good break, and we will definitely rebook (in fact already have).
-
"The house is charming, and we enjoyed our stay."
The cottage is well-provided and attractively decorated, in good order. We would return. Hawes is a good base for a Dales holiday, and from Gayle it is a pleasant short walk into town. There are a few drawbacks to the house however: the small sitting room is over-cluttered with unnecessary items of furniture, whilst the throws used to cover rather weary sofas are tiresome; less furniture would make it possible to create a little dining area in the sitting room, by the front window - which we did, having temporarily made space. Parking is very problematical, also. Overall, we had a good holiday experience.
*Thank you for your feedback. The cottage is suitable for up to six guests, so having an arm chair in addition to two sofas is key to comfort levels when there are six adults in the house! I do explain in the House Book that guests are free to move furniture around as they wish to make their stay comfortable - which I see you did. The tables have been bespoke-built to be versatile and, as such, can be moved around to suit each guests' needs.* Property Owner

"Hillaid View is a charming Dales cittage in the heart of Gayle close to Hawes."
It is a true gem of a cottage with everything you could want and more. The kitchen is very well equipped, the sitting room comfy, and the bed in the master bedroom is just heavenly to sink into after a day of walking and exploring. You really have all you need right at your fingertips. The double shower and bath are both of a high standard indeed. All I can say is book this cottage you will not be disappointed. We will be back!
-
"What an amazing cottage!"
Literally blew us away, everything you could want and more! Perfecting cottage and perfect location.
-
"Back from a brilliant 3 night stay at Hillside view."
The cottage itself is in a great location (around 10/15 mins walk from the centre of Hawes) and 5 mins walk from the Wensleydale creamery. I would highly Recommend this cottage

About the location
HAWES
Leyburn 16 miles.
Hawes is a popular market town in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire and is regarded as one of the honeypot tourist attractions of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Standing between Buttertubs and Fleet Moss, the town is an excellent centre for walking and touring Wensleydale and the adjoining dales of Swaledale, Cotterdale, Dentdale, Garsdale, Wharfedale and Chapel-le-Dale. Take a walk around the Hawes Town Trail, Millennium Walk, Pennine Way or along the River Ure, which is nearby. In 1998 Hawes was awarded the English Tourist Board Silver Award for the "Best Day Trip Out". Modern traffic has long replaced coaches and horse drawn wagons along its narrow streets, but market day (Tuesdays) in Hawes is as busy as ever, with a farmers’ auction attracting sheep farmers from all over the north of England. Traditional shops, cafés and inns now cater for a variety of Dales visitors as well as the local community. The award-winning Wensleydale Creamery, made famous by the animated Wallace and Grommit films, is now open to visitors so that they can see the famous cheese being made and sample the end product in a welcoming café. In the old station yard you will find the busy National Park Centre and Dales Countryside Museum. The Museum is home to the magnificent collection of Dales artefacts by the two great Dales historians and writers, Marie Hartley and Joan Ingilby.
Kitchen with dining area seats maximum 3 people & the sitting room with dining area also seats 3 people. These can be joined together to sit a maximum of 6 people.
