Although the original booking was via Booking.com, Sykes were the actual agent and came to the rescue. The potential fiasco was dealt with very quickly by Sykes and we ended up at the Melsome Barn. WOW, what an amazing place! Absolutely wonderful apartment with large lounge, diner, kitchen, well provided bathroom and huge comfortable bedroom. The windows provided views across fields with sheep, cattle and alpacas grazing. Situated on a very quiet lane the venue had off road parking. There was a pub/restaurant within a 5 minute walk. The hosts were very friendly and helpful. This is probably the best place that we have stayed at during our 6 years of doing road trips around the UK. Just STUNNING!

Hazel and Charlie are such lovely hosts and are on hand, though not obtrusively so, should you require anything. Plenty of room for your car, the barn is mahoosive it certainly has the biggest bedroom I’ve ever seen complimented by a very comfortable bed, a beautiful bathroom, superb kitchen with everything you’d need and the recliners are the dogs danglies! Waking up in the morning with a cuppa sitting outside with the chickens gently clucking away is about as relaxing as you can get, pop your head over the wall and the Alpacas might come to visit. The surrounding area makes you feel as if you’re in the heart of the countryside but a plethora of stunning Yorkshire villages are within an easy 10-minute drive. This is a 15 out of 10 property and I’d eat my hat if you didn’t like it! P.S. Oh and there’s always “Treat Tuesday” to look forward to!

In addition your host Hazel and Charlie are extremely friendly, attentive and helpful. No problem, fully recommending the barn, we had a great holiday. The only reason to give a 9 rating is that we found the depth of the entrance steps to be insufficient to fully support your foot, making attention necessary when descending and use of the handrail. Not a big thing for us but could be difficult for some.

There was also lots of walking within a short drive away - so a good base for those wanting to stretch their legs (be it up a hill or along a river or bridleway) and to breathe in the fresh air. There were helpful walking books provided. There are lots of interesting villages around the area as well as good places to eat to suit all tastes and pockets. Our hosts, Hazel and Charlie were there to welcome us and ensure all was well. They let us be, during the week but were around to help quickly sort out a minor issue of a guest's noisy TV in the flat below, late one night. We walked the 3 Yorkshire peaks while there which are all within easy driving distance from the property. It was so nice to return after a days walking to the comfort of the barn. • "We had a really lovely week at Melsome Barn."

The owners Hazel and Charlie made us most welcome and gave us advice of places to visit locally. The accommodation is very spacious, clean, warm and comfortable. Lovely views from the barn and we enjoyed the presence of the alpacas, goats and chickens. Secure off road parking. We love the Yorkshire Dales and hope to stay at Melsome Barn when we return to this area.

  • "Melsome barn was a lovely place to stay, and I would recommend it to anyone else."

However I was very disappointed with Sykes Cottages as a company. I was nervous about going on holiday, sleeping on a mattress that someone else had slept on 24 hrs. previously, and tried to contact Sykes, but when I telephoned and went through all the channels, I kept being cut off. I emailed Sykes but they didn't get back to me until after they had taken the full cost of the holiday from my account. So I was then prevented from cancelling my holiday. They eventually emailed me 2 weeks before going to say no one was going to be staying in the barn for 3 days before we were due to go. However when we arrived we discovered this was false as the barn was let and the people had only vacated that morning. So I will not be using Sykes again.

Thank you for your feedback for Melsome Barn, we are glad to hear that you had a lovely time. Regarding the email we sent to you about the property being empty prior to arrival, at the time of the email, this was the case we did not have another booking in place, however, this can change. We are sorry you are disappointed with Sykes Cottages, although we are pleased you still enjoyed your holiday. Property Owner

The owners Hazel & Charlie were very helpful and friendly, giving details of places to visit, eat at and shop at. Some welcome provisions made for a lovely surprise on our arrival. Would rebook again if visiting this location, and would recommend, ideally placed for visiting all the attractions in the area.

(i.e. not filled with someone's cast-offs which we have exoerienced). Good parking, quiet situation, garden. The owners are delightful: thoughtful, helpful, kind and good humoured. Plenty of useful information in the barn about local facilities and activities. The surrounding countryside is, of course, glorious and we were blessed , mostly, with good weather. A relaxing and happy stay. The actual booking arrangements with Sykes was neither impressive nor good.

The property is set in a beautiful location and equipped with everything you could possibly need. Hazel and Charlie are great hosts and were available should we have needed them - not that we did as everything was perfect. On arrival, there was milk in the fridge, fresh flowers, wine and cakes which was a lovely touch. There are lots of walks accessible from the property in some of the most beautiful parts of the Yorkshire Dales. Our highlights were Settle to Stainton, Malham (absolutely breathtaking) and pen-y-ghent. We also spent a day in the Lake District which is a very easy drive from the property. The kitchen is very well equipped to cook your own meals but there are also lots of nice places to eat near by as well. After a day out hiking Melsome was the perfect place to return to and relax before the next days adventures, if you can drag yourself out of the most comfortable bed ever that is! Thanks Hazel and Charlie for a wonderful stay, we have already started thinking about dates for our next visit.

I really felt like they would sort out any issues we had. The barn conversion had everything we needed and was very homely. It was a great base for our walking holiday. The only thing I would say is that if you want to have a lie in I would recommend an eye-mask as the skylights in the bedroom are not fitted with blinds. Other than that we had a fantastic time and would recommend.

  • "A five star stay!"

I do not have a single negative comment to make about our stay at Melsome Barn. We were warmly greeted on arrival by the owner Hazel (who was always on hand if we had any questions) and shown around what I would describe as a wonderfully generous, luxurious and spotlessly clean, home-from-home. We were also treated to a bottle of wine and some little cakes, which was a lovely touch. The open-plan lounge / diner / kitchen, was large and yet still somehow very cosy. The log burner was a Godsend as we had a blast of very chilly weather! The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed, not that we cooked much for ourselves as the local (a couple of minute's walk) served great food. It was great to have a dishwasher, who wants to be doing dishes on holiday! My husband's main requirement is a great shower, and this one did not disappoint! The bedroom was huge, with a picture window overlooking the alpaca neighbours! The bed was super comfy and there was plenty of storage for us both. The location was great, just off the main road, and yet we were not bothered by any vehicle noise. Settle is a lovely little town and there are walks from the door, or the Three Peaks are easily accessible if you are a bit more ambitious.

The property

This spacious first floor conversion of a detached stone-built barn is located in the grounds of the owner’s farmhouse on the outskirts of Settle, just over a mile from this ever-popular old market town.

Set amongst Dales countryside, this is a first-class holiday home to really get away from it all.

Recently fully restored using much imagination and design flair, the existing owners have gone to great lengths to ensure that Melsome provides stylish and modern accommodation for all their guests.

Enter the retreat via an external stone-built staircase and balcony area into the central hallway.

The main living area is a real delight with a marvellous open-plan design.

The bespoke corner kitchen is well-equipped and there is a central breakfast bar which serves as a dining area.

The lovely sitting room boasts a warm and cosy woodburning stove, a great place to be on a cold winter's night, snuggling up in front of the fire with a warm drink and a good book.

The spacious master bedroom features a super king-size double bed, fabulous A-framed beams and lovely views of the surrounding countryside including the herd of sheep grazing in the adjoining field.

Add to this luxurious mix a modern shower room with walk-in power shower and all the ingredients are there for a superb Yorkshire Dales holiday.

Guests can sit on the balcony and enjoy views out towards the limestone fells and maybe catch the odd steam train going past.

With a myriad of paths, lanes and bridleways from the doorstep, guests can experience walking and cycling through some of the most scenic countryside in the Yorkshire Dales, whilst for the more experienced and energetic guests there is of course the famous Three Peaks challenge.

The Settle Loop is a bridleway which can be walked, cycled or enjoyed on horseback.

For those less inclined towards the great outdoors, there are many sightseeing activities in the area.

Visit the Trough of Bowland, an AONB, or head into the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

A first class holiday home for two.

SETTLE

Malham 6 miles; Skipton 17 miles; Kendal 25 miles.

The bustling market town of Settle lies at the south west rim of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, nestled beside the largest outcrop of limestone in Britain - a region of scars, cliffs, caves and potholes - amongst some of the most picturesque scenery in North Yorkshire. Tuesday is market day in Settle, when the square is filled with stalls offering a wide variety of crafts and goods. The market place is surrounded by local businesses, the centre being dominated by The Shambles, an historic three storey building with shops on two levels and houses above, and the Town Hall. There is a good selection of restaurants and pubs and a public swimming pool. The Victoria Hall has entertainment and other activities such as folk nights throughout the year. The famous Settle-Carlisle Railway crosses some of the most beautiful and inspiring upland scenery in the country. Natural attractions such as Malham Cove and Gordale Scar are within easy reach, as are the nearby Dales towns of Skipton and Malham. Settle is in the midst of excellent walking country and is a good base for touring the Dales, the Lake District and the Forest of Bowland.
