Beautiful house with absolutely everything you need for your stay and will definitely look to book up again. Owner was very responsive to questions and requests. Top quality.

Off-road parking was particularly appreciated. The cottage was spotlessly clean and very comfortable.

  • "Overall we had a really good break."

The cottage was very comfortable. However, we struggled with the allowance of only one small bin for general rubbish. I don't know how one would manage if all six of us came as planned. There was no green bag, as stated in the information file, for recycling. We had to collect and took our recycling stuff to the recycling bins which were located at the tourist information car park. In general it would have been OK but it took some organizing, especially with the wet weather.

Thank you for your review. There isn’t a collection from the cottage for recycling. All recycling needs to be taken to the bins in the tourist information car park. It’s 5 mins walk/drive away. We tend to just use any plastic bag and empty it into the appropriate recycling bin. Unfortunately the council provides us with only one external bin and we are unable to change this. It is a standard size, not a wheelie bin. We will alter the information booklet when we next visit and ensure the green recycling box is available for guests (in the utility room). I’m pleased you enjoyed your holiday. Property Owner

Plenty of space and everything you could need. The layout of the property was perfect for 3 generations. Beautiful top floor bedroom with seating and a lovely balcony with superb views, great as a grandparent retreat. The children (7 & 5) loved the little office/reading room and the lovely garden for them play in. They asked if we can live there lol. Thank you to the owners we had a really lovely break.

  • "This is a lovely house and the new owners have resolved the minor niggles that I highlighted following our stay last year."

The house is well located, well equipped and well maintained. A failure of communication between Sykes and the housekeepers regarding the splitting of the bed on the second floor was quickly resolved on the evening of arrival. The second floor bedroom bedroom with its lovely balcony overlooking the hills is particularly nice and was a welcome refuge from the noisy grandchildren on the floor below! Despite mixed weather, we had a super holiday and wouldn't hesitate to use the house again.

  • "We are a family of 2 grandparents, in our mid 80s, our son and his wife and our 2 grandchildren, 4 and 2."

The bedrooms and bath/shower facilities were very good, e.g. toilets on each floor, and sufficient showers , comfortable beds /washbasins/bath. The staircase from ground floor to first floor is steep and another handrail, on the other side to the existing one , would have been very helpful. The kitchen and eating area was fit for purpose but the sitting room was disappointing, and the central ceiling light had no shade. The sofas were comfortable but colors didn’t match with the carpet, and the fire didn’t work. It had an out of order sign on it , and judging by previous guest remarks, had been like that since early 2023. It didn’t have a cosy feel to it, rather a collection of items. We spent time outside in the very nice garden, which was great, and the garden furniture was very good, but if the weather had been bad, we would have been cramped indoors. The back steps are steep and are also difficult for children and older people..

Thank you for your review. I notice that you have stayed at the cottage before (during the previous ownership and early in our ownership) and the cottage size has not changed. The back steps are steep (4 in total with a handrail each side) but there are 2 small steps to the front door. These can be seen on the front photo of the house. The side path from the front of the house to the back garden of the house is almost flat/slightly down hill. We updated the decor to our taste and replaced the furniture to reach the fire retardant criteria. We are unable to please everyone’s individual taste. The gas fire was condemned during an inspection therefore it was marked out of order. We now have an electric fire. The points that you made after your previous stay had been rectified. The views from the kitchen are outstanding, and the whole cottage is very well fitted out and there wasn't anything we required in the kitchen missing - thank you. The only comment we would make is the galley kitchen, which we appreciate you cannot do anything about, but emptying the dishwasher makes for an interesting logistical experience !

  • "Having stayed at number 7 Stybarrow cottage in October 2021 and March 2022 we were surprised to find how much it had deteriorated in such a short space of time."

You state in one of your emails ‘we wanted to provide you with a reminder of how you should leave your property upon departure’. I would like to mention how we found this property upon arrival this year. Our Lakes break was eagerly looked forward to with great excitement but to be greeted with the main room having totally bare walls devoid of pictures and the focal centre gas fired imitation log burner out of order made the room totally soulless. The framed pictures and a fire surround semi covered with a blanket were found in the front entrance hall prompting the question ‘If decorating and alterations were incomplete why was the cottage allowed to be rented out’? The visitors book dated 20th January 2023 also mentioned the disappointment of a defunct gas fire. Switching the central ceiling light on in the main room highlighted an unacceptable accumulation of dirt in each of the glass lampshades. We had occasion to call the maintenance person out to investigate the partial heating up of the first floor bathroom radiator and the total lack of heat from the radiator in the second floor bedroom sitting area. This, we were told by this person, was the result of lack of bleeding the radiators over a prolonged period. A ceiling window blind was also unable to be operated in this room which he also managed to rectify. Within the same bedroom a large damp patch was evident on the sloping ceiling and adjoining wall. On the first floor landing leading to the second floor stairs a small carpet laid over the main carpet was unsuccessfully held in place with numerous one-inch square double sided sticky patches to prevent the smaller carpet walking. Some minor points, but nevertheless relevant; we would have expected a cruet set for the dining table instead of having to use the catering size salt and smaller pepper drums in the kitchen. One of the bedside lamp bulbs in the front bedroom had blown and although we did not need to use the kitchen freezer we noticed the top drawer was frozen in and the plastic frontage broken, obviously by excessive force of someone trying to open it. I can supply photographs of the main complaints if required. We would have thought that a major operation such as yourselves had an inspection procedure in place to ensure properties are fit for purpose and also to prevent your reputation from being tarnished. Goodbye Sykes. Laurie Sole

Dear Laurie, I am sorry to hear that your holiday was such a disappointment. It is useful to have such a detailed review so that we can correct any snags. I will notify the management company about the points you have raised and they will be rectified. Unfortunately, the fire was no longer working and we have arranged for a replacement electric fire due to be fitted in April. Future guests have been informed that the fire is not working. The property has been recently decorated (in our absence) and the pictures will be put up on our return. All the items in the front porch will be removed in the next few days. • "This is a lovely property and we had a super holiday there."

Its key advantages are its location, off street parking, a beautifully maintained garden with rwo nice patios with comfortable furniture. The kitchen is very well equipped, the bathrooms are very nice and the second floor bedroom is spacious and has a lovely terrace overlooking the fellside. I would have given it 5 stars but for a few minor issues that could easily be remedied. The lack of personal contact with the owner was disappointing. The mobile number we were given was always on answerphone and l didn't get a response to all my messages. For example we had difficulty finding the key to the store where the tumble drier was located. It would have been useful to have been warned that pound coins are needed to operate it. The fridge freezer has seen better days. Some of the plastic drawers are cracked, two of the three shelves in the door of the fridge were missing as was the glass shelf over the vegetable storage. This reduced the overall capacity of the fridge but it proved adequate for our needs. The drain to the shower in the main bathroom is very slow and you need to have a very quick shower to avoid the shower tray overflowing. I suspect that it just needs clearing. The light on the first floor landing leading to the second floor doesn't work and seems to have a loose connection. The lack of wardrobe space on the second floor was a disappointment and could be easily remedied as there is plenty of space in the room or on the landing. No towels were provided for the WCs in the utility room and on the second floor. There is no provision for hanging a towel in the second floor WC. Other than the tumble drier, there is no provision for drying towels and clothes when the heating is turned off. These comments are made to help the owner. I repeat that we had a lovely holiday and l would be happy to rent the house again in the future.

Thank you for your feedback. It is good to receive such a detailed review as it alerts us to any problems. We bought 7 Stybarrow in April 22 and have not been able to visit till recently , because we honoured the bookings to avoid disappointment. I apologise for the lack of contact details. Lake Cottage Holidays now manages the property. We planned all along to update the cottage and many of your points are in our plan. The information booklet has now been updated with regards to parking, tumble drier and contact details for any problem. We have addressed the lighting, drainage of the first floor shower, and placed a hook for hanging for a towel in 2nd floor WC. We have replaced the fridge and painted the kitchen. We have replaced the kitchen blind. There’s now a chest of drawers and wardrobe in the 2nd floor bedroom. There is a clothes horse next to the tumble drier. All the keys are now labelled and are in one place. We will continue to update the property every time we visit. I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay despite the glitches. We hope you will visit again. Many thanks for your feedback. Kind regards, Owner Property Owner

  • "Such a lovely holiday home in a beautiful setting."

Clean, comfortable and spacious. Bright and airy bedrooms with great views. Beautiful main bathroom, the bath was appreciated after a strenuous hill walk! Everything you need in the kitchen. Loved sitting on the balcony, so peaceful in the mornings and evenings. The garden is so pretty and well-kept, was lovely to sit outside for breakfast on sunnier mornings. In Glenridding itself, there were nice places to go for food and drinks, the Traveller's Rest being very handy just up the road (generous portions of good pub fare). The corner shop and mini-market are well-supplied with essentials and a large variety of local ales. Good bus service available if you want to give the car a rest. We had a fantastic time re-exploring the Lake District from our Glenridding base.
