  • "We stayed for 4 nights last week."

Great location. Beautiful cottage, warm and cosy and spotlessly clean too. It was very well equipped and had everything we needed. Very comfortable bed with quality duvet, pillows and bed linen. The bathroom was perfect for us both with huge bath for me and large shower for my husband. However we both would have preferred a bath sheet, not bath towel. We would definitely book again as it was perfect for places to eat out and the bus stop right outside the door. The only tiny negative was the very worn out information sheet, which also needs updating. Logs and kindling for the fire can be bought at the Co-op or at Barney’s just around the corner.

Loved we were just central to things, and used bus a lot, as wasn’t walking a lot. Grasmere is popular of day, but night is very quiet and this cottage is 2 min walking distance from the pub. Thank you so much x

Everything you need is catered for in the kitchen. The bathroom is fantastic with a huge walk in shower. Grasmere, itself, is a lovely village with a co-op round the corner with quaint little shops. Mike, the owner, was also very helpful. When we first arrived we found the kettle was broken but this was quickly replaced. All in all a good break away and we will definitely be back, hopefully next year. Sue Stayed September 2024

Cottage was very clean and ideal for a couple. Very comfortable bed and great pillows. Large bathroom with huge shower and beautiful free standing bath. Toilet is very high for those of us vertically challenged! Just a few touches to make the customer feel valued would improve the experience ie a small welcome basket or even just a couple of bottles of water on arrival. Replacement of the outside rusty chairs and table is required and some welcome information thoughtfully put together rather than a tatty sheet of A4. The wainwright books and games cupboard provided were great and really appreciated. Overall a lovely little cottage in a gorgeous village and would certainly recommend.

This lovely cottage has everything needed for an enjoyable stay, with some nice touches like puzzles/games, hand soap, hand cream and tissues provided, (though perhaps kitchen would benefit from for example small plates, milk jug and tea cosy). Very comfortable bed and despite the unusually high toilet, great bathroom with excellent shower. • "This was the second time I have stayed at the cottage and both stays were excellent."

The cottage is small but beautiful and well equipped, comfortable and peaceful. I am disabled with arthritis and rather limited mobility. My husband drove me up to Grasmere but I stayed on my own, and I made my own way home on public transport using railway assistance. Everything worked well. The one thing which might be a bit daunting for someone with mobility problems is the steep staircase, but I found it quite manageable if I took my time. I was on holiday. The slow and thoughtful ascent and descent was all part of the zen like quality of the stay! The setting suited me perfectly. I don’t drive but excellent buses stop very near the cottage, linking Keswick and Kendal. Other bus links and tours are easily available. Grasmere itself is lovely, of course. I found everything I needed locally in easy walking distance and was never short of a place to sit and have a cuppa. My son came to visit one day and was impressed by all the vegan offerings available in the village. I even managed to walk up to Allen Bank one day, which was a beautiful experience. Sitting where Wordsworth once sat and seeing my first red squirrel was something I’ll never forget. I thoroughly recommend Beck Steps for a couple or anyone wanting a solo holiday. It is a cottage with charm and comfort which does wonders for the soul!

An excellent walk to Ambleside too....aside from the weather during our week! The cottage would benefit from a more detailed pack about the compliances, Wood Burner, facilities, walks etc. I think a few more logs could have been left, we literally only got 3 which were gone on the first night! Enjoyed our break and would recommend as a small holiday cottage for two. Nice and cozy

  • "Nice cottage, great location."

A couple of comments to improve:- Seat cushion in leather chair needs re-stuffing as quite uncomfortable; bulbs need checking as several not working (light on lounge windowsill, bedside lamp and extractor fan bulbs) other bulbs flickering (bathroom and bedside lamp). Saucepan drawer in kitchen needs sorting - cluttered with an excessive number of pans! No available cupboard or shelf in kitchen to store food items ie cans, jars, bottles etc. Larger towels would be nice especially with such a lovely bathroom to enjoy! Basic welcome tray with a few teabags/coffee and pint of milk would be lovely especially when arrival time is not until 5pm.

This is a lovely small cottage in the centre of Grasmere village. despite bring in the centre it is very quiet as it has thick walls and good double glazing. It was clean and comfortable and the bathroom and kitchen facilities are good. The minor things that could easily be sorted are - put some sort of holder for bath things next to the bath, and have the leather armchair in the living room re-stuffed as it is really uncomfortable! The large double bed is very comfortable. The cottage is well situated for a holiday in Grasmere and if, like me, you don't have a car it is perfect as there are lots of shops, cafes etc in the village, excellent walks and a wonderful bus service right on the doorstop.

  • "I had a truly happy stay at Beck Steps 1."

Everything was comfortable and well thought out. The shower was glorious, the bed very comfortable and the kitchen was well stocked, with everything beautifully clean. I utterly loved my time there. I was on my own for most of the week. My husband drove me up but had to leave at the weekend. I am disabled with a deformed spine which leaves me almost bent double with mobility problems. I walk with a wheeled walker. The one thing that had concerned me was the stairs, and when I saw them I thought ‘uh oh, here we go!’ They are steep with a curve. But I found them solid , with steps of a good width and after the first day I became cheerfully adept at mountaineering. On thing I would suggest is that a small hand grab rail at the top of the stairs would be reassuring and would help all sorts of people, the older ones, pregnant ones or even the ones who have had one happy pint too many!, without looking like a disability aid. As an older disabled woman without a car the location was perfect, with local Co op and easy access to the whole of Grasmere and buses on the doorstep. To sum up, the whole experience was lovely, lovely, lovely!

Maybe a little more explicit instructions for the rear parking would have helped, but that was very quickly resolved with a phone call to Mike. Another pleasant surprise was the fact that the property had a dishwasher. We didn't recall this being in the particulars, therefore well worth adding in this detail for future customers. The level of finish and quality of the property was exceptional and an absolute credit to the owners. We particularly enjoyed the underfloor heating on those cold morning starts. The cottage provided us with a perfect base, for what was a really relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable break to start 2023. We hope to pay it a visit again. Kindest regards, Craig & Johanne Stones

I do have one negative, (but it’s actually a +) the TV signal is very poor. But the smart TV we logged into Netflix and watched mindless zombie movies and loved it. Being away from the normal TV life was perfect. No news. Perfect. Car parking at the rear was great. Got the Velar in, no problem. That’s 5m long by nearly 2m wide. Cottage central heating and hot water was perfect. Always warm. Stove was lovely for a couple of nights when we were back early and put it on. But otherwise in - degree C conditions warm as toast. Everything you need was there. It was spotless of dust. So clean. Perfect location, right in Grasmere and can walk to breakfast across the road. Co-Op 20m away. Thank you for such an awesome cottage. I did see this in other reviews so would support that. The owners definitely need to invest in some new comfortable seating, especially after a long days walking! The cottage would also benefit from another cupboard above the table in the kitchen to put some bits away. There was no space at all for food storage. Finally it would have been good to have more than 1 towel each for the week and a hook in the bathroom somewhere to hang a bathrobe. Great to have parking (although note if you have a large car like ours its quite tight to get in and out of, but doable with care!). Décor very much to our taste and absolutely spotless on arrival. Two very very minor suggestions - a clothes airer / line of some sort (it has a washer but then nowhere to hang clothes indoors when its raining) would be handy, and the luxury bathroom is great but would probably take our own "bath sheets" in future (towels provided were fine but the largest is a bath "towel" and personally like the much larger versions) . Situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park is the lovely village of Grasmere, probably best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found". Any visit to Grasmere needs to include The Grasmere Gingerbread shop, where the Wilson family has been making gingerbread for over 60 years. Also in the village are a number of shops, pubs, a church which dates back to the 13th century, and Grasmere Lake. Grasmere Sports takes place every August, where you can watch participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland wrestling. Just five miles away is the town of Ambleside and Lake Winderemere where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants and the 17th century Bridge House, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Cruises, boat trips and watersports can all be enjoyed on Lake Windermere, and the towns of Windermere and Keswick are also within driving distance.
