"Lovely stay here, again."
A welcome pack of milk, etc. would be appreciated, and some smaller dishes for cooking would be useful (eg small casserole dish). Needs a new set of table mats, as the existing ones are now stained and sticky. The hot water supply is much improved!

"Lanterns is an extremely comfortable and well appointed self catering property."
It has all the important points right, good beds, comfortable sofas, a well equipped kitchen, good heating and plenty of hot water. It is a light and airy property with lovely views and is in an excellent location within walking distance of Grasmere. It takes a while for the hot water to come through in both the kitchen and one of the en suites but once it does, there’s plenty. This is not unusual in an older property. Grasmere has lots of good eateries in the area if you don’t want to cook. Try The Jumble Room and The Yan at Broadrayne. We liked Lanterns so much we rebooked for next year whilst staying there.
Thank you for taking the time to leave your kind feedback. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay and the views! We are delighted that you have rebooked for next year! We take all comments on board. The Lakelovers Owner Relations Team Property Owner

"There is no doubt that Lanterns is a stand out property and to date we have stayed there four times."
It is very spacious, well laid out and is situated in the central fells, surrounded by mountains. You are just a few minutes walk from the beautiful village of Grasmere, Given its status as one of the very best holiday properties, we have noticed on this and previous visits that despite being generally clean [fridge, sinks, showers, worktops, tables] the more ‘hidden’ areas do need a more thorough cleaning and on this occasion, several ‘open’ areas had balls of dust/hair visible. For me, this 5* property rates at about 4.8 due to the cleaning issues. Still love it, but so wish it was cleaned more thoroughly.
-
"Lovely house although we couldn’t use the main bedroom shower as the water was cold."
Also had to boil the kettle in the kitchen for hot water because it took an age to get hot. Seating and beds all very comfortable and the heating was efficient. Conservatory was great too. House in a great location just a short walk to Grasmere.

"It has been a delight to stay here."
The bungalow was in a quiet location, walkable into Grasmere and had a lovely overall feel to it with lush ‘green’ outlooks/views from most rooms. The beds were super comfy, the lounge was spacious with plenty of seating, a large kitchen with some bar seating in addition to the dining area. You can tell the home is much loved. We had 2 very minor niggles. We had difficultly getting hot water running in the kitchen and often had to have the tap running for some while, it was the same with one shower. The kitchen was well equipped in terms of pans, plates, sharp knives etc but only had 6 everyday drinking glasses, so could benefit from some more. We would love to revisit and experience the cosiness of this bungalow in winter!

"Fantastic well kept property, beautiful setting couldn't ask for more."
Everything is walking distance you don't even have to get the car out. Will definitely book again.
-
"Lovely private location and spotless."
Having the utility/side garage storage was great for the paddle boards and kayak. Tesco deliver to this property. We spent most of the time relaxing in the dining room as that room had the views. There’s access from the front door to local walks up the fells including Alcock Tarn and only 5 minutes walk to the pub and 4 minutes walk to the bus stop. The rainfall shower head in the master ensuite is not attached so it moves around and hits the sliding door so you use the normal shower head. The rainfall shower head should just be removed.

"Lateens was well equipped, comfy, clean and in a perfect location to explore the local area and further afield."
It had everything we needed and it had some nice touches - eg board / card games, maps, fire wood and the extra secure storage was a bonus. We encountered a couple of niggles; shower leaking - draining the hot water, the hot water we found was generally was adhoc (some / no hot water from different taps at different times of day). The toaster was broken by a previous occupant and the odd light bulb out. Lake lovers was extremely responsive to the niggles and tried to resolve asap - the handy man that came the next day was amazing and brilliant. But we can’t help that a bit of attention would have spotted some of these rather than us having to raise them. For the premium price - we didn’t expect to have to manage the hot water as we did - whether this was completely down to the leak? The entrance to the property is tight as others have mentioned and parking on the road means it can be tricky getting in and out. Overall niggles aside, we really enjoyed our stay at lanterns and it met our needs. It is a lovely property - the hot water situation meant it didn’t get full marks.

"The house was lovely."
The experience though was tempered by the total absence of any kind of ‘welcome’ and lack of any basics in the house apart from the dishwasher package. There was for example no tea, coffee, sugar, salt, pepper or olive oil. There was also one roll of toilet paper per toilet. For £1200 for three days, this meanness won’t be forgotten.

"We had a delightful week in Lanterns and the house is very comfortable, clean and convenient."
We did , however experience a lack of hot water on arrival and it took a while to sort it out so a more comprehensive explanation of the system would be helpful. We were blessed with perfect weather and were able to eat outside which was a real bonus. The facilities outside are also good and really nice to have two areas to use and there are lovely views of the surrounding fells. All in all we had a great week in Lanterns, credit to the owners for providing a real " home from home".

"It's the second time I have stayed at Lanterns beautiful bungalow quiet location ..."
It's the second time I have stayed at Lanterns beautiful bungalow quiet location 2mins walk to nearest pub and bus stop 10mins walk into Grasmere would highly recommend it

"Our 4th visit to Lanterns at Grasmere - a modern, spacious and very well presented holiday property."
The overall layout is superb. Lanterns combines comfort with a home-from-home feel. The position at the foot of the surrounding fells, is just a 5-10 minute stroll away from the delightful village of Grasmere. The nearby main road [ambleside to Keswick] while quite close, is not intrusive. The fixtures are high quality. On this visit, we noticed 2 improvements- the whole property has been repainted and we found all areas to be clean, including ‘hidden’ corners. The owners [and Lakelovers] clearly take on board comments, including one we made in previous reviews about cleaning in corners. Care is needed when entering and exiting the driveway by car - it’s a little tight. One tiny further recommendation - a range of microwaveable containers for the kitchen please! Thanks again to the owners for presenting their property for holiday use and to Lakelovers for presenting this lovely home for us to enjoy.
-
"Excellent apart from central heating failure on Saturday but your contact arrangements allowed me to have it repaired my midday Sunday."
Such a quiet and comfortable location.
Thank you for taking the time to write your feedback. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay. We are sorry to hear of the issue that you experienced with the boiler, but pleased that we were able to resolve. We hope to welcome you to the Lake District again. "Lovely property, everything you need in the kitchen."
Warm and comfortable place to stay. Near the pubs and Grasmere lovely to walk round. Will try and return if we can.
-
"Another lovely holiday at Lanterns with the family."
This is the 4th time staying and it is like returning home! Very well equipped and comfortable bungalow. Excellent location with walks from the door and easy access to Grasmere village.
-
"It has been our 2nd visit to Lanterns and we love it."
Lovely house and great location. The welcome bottle of wine was much appreciated. We have been coming to The Lakes for years and have always loved Grasmere. The only disappointment is we tried to book again for 2024 and the house is full.
-
"The cottage was lovely but it could do with some new cushions in the main room but it was really nice otherwise"
-
"The Lanterns is the perfect spot to enjoy a nice relaxing time in the Lake District."
All the facilities are first rate. Great location. Stunning property. Very warm and cosy and comfortable. Highly recommend to couple or families alike.
-
"A great place."
Fantastic size. Great heating system, soon had the house warm and toasty. All we needed for a lovely week away.
-
"We had a small issue with the heating in the conservatory/dinning area which we reported to Lake Lovers just before 5pm they sent someone out the next day so great service."
The Property was excellent in great location we have booked again for October 2024.
-
"Our 3rd visit to Lanterns and a 4th booked."
This review will be the same as our last one from the June visit. Overall, the property is superb and is the best of the many we have used over a 35 year period. Lanterns has a great sense of space and design. The location is just a short walk from the glorious and charming village of Grasmere in the heart of the surrounding fells, offering walks in all directions. We have rated cleanliness at 3 - not the maximum 4. If we could split this rating we would have offered 3.8, given that all the main areas of the property were clean. The slightly lower rating is unchanged from our last visit, reflecting the issue of the need to clean in the corners and around/behind furniture. If this were achieved, it would be a maximum score all round ! Once again, we are grateful to the owners for making Lanterns available and only make the point about cleanliness as a detail. What a great place !
Thank you for your feedback. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us at Lanterns. We will pass on your comments about the cleaning to the housekeeping team, it is very important to us that our standards are as high as possible. We look forward to welcoming you to Lanterns again. "Great place to stay , spacious house , great location ."
I would highly recommend it so much so we have booked again for next year
-
"Our second visit to Lanterns with a further two bookings made."
This is a lovely property to stay in - Lanterns is spacious, stylish and offers great facilities. The position is lovely, just outside the village. The owners clearly take on board recommendations from those that stay and the overall feel of the property is one of quality. These views are set against many years of staying in self-catering both on Grasmere [3 properties excluding Lanterns] and many in other areas. Very highly recommended and thank you to the owners for making this lovely home available to book. The rating on cleanliness does feel a little mean and is simply down to the odd corner needed a clean.
Thank you for your lovely feedback. We are delighted you enjoyed your stay with us. We are very sorry that on this occasion the cleanliness was not up to your standards, this is something we take very seriously and will definitely look into. We look forward to welcoming you again soon. The owner relations team - Lakelovers Property Owner

"Very nice cottage, the extra seating /tv in dining room is good as it allows you to spread out if you all want different things in evening, relax or TV etc."
Did not realise listing said it has sky tv and did not find it, but probably just as well as would have been a distraction. Did not think we would use it but did actually find the washing machine useful. hoping to book again .
Thank you for your kind comments, we are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay. We take all comments on board, and we hope to welcome you back The Lakelovers Owner Relations Team Property Owner

"A really comfortable house in a lovely setting."
Close to both the town and the countryside. We had a wonderful holiday and enjoyed the many walks we could do from our doorstep. Thank you.

"Really lovely cottage."
Spent the week with our son and family we all really enjoyed it. Views spectacular, walk into Grasmere 10min. Lots to do for all of the family. Walks from the cottage. One of the best cottages we’ve Stayed in. Thank you.
Thank you for your kind comments. We are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay, and the view! We hope to welcome you back. Property Owner

"Our second stay at 'The Lanterns' we had a great stay in a lovely comfortable, well equipped house."
-
"Thank you for providing such a lovely holiday home."
We had a fantastic stay, and hope to return again next year. Lanterns is by far the nicest we have stayed in at Grasmere.
-
"This was a very nice accommodation very clean and a really lovely location ..."
This was a very nice accommodation very clean and a really lovely location Conservatory was too cold to use on our week as we had frosts every day Difficulty getting hot water in the morning for showers eventually found timer switch in cupboard
-
"The cottage was great in general."
I must echo others in sayings that it was let down by the plumbing, the showers often had no water supply. Also some cooking implements were dangerous. IE frying pan with handle that falls off! Broken knife handles. We hope to return and see that these problems rectified. Overall the cottage is very nice.
-
"Enjoyed a week with our adult sons and their partners."
More logs would have been nice .Not enough bins outside for rubbish. The dates in the info file worked out as the next week so we missed the bin collection.Overall gad a lovely week.Have stayed before
-
"This is the second time we have stayed at lanterns."
Set in a lovely quiet position, on the edge of grasmere but only a short walk to the shops and restaurants. The bungalow it self is spacious, comfortable and equips with everything you need, it’s absolutely beautiful inside and out and so far one of our favourites in the lakes. Highly recommend!
-
"Excellent all round thank you."
We hope to return
-
"Comfortable, warm and perfectly located."
Once you adapt to the idiosyncrasies of the plumbing, a five star stay!
-
"There was much to like about Lanterns: well positioned, spacious and comfortable."
If it was a cottage for four we would have been able to award four, or even five, stars. Our issues were with the third bedroom. As others have commented, the shower is hopeless: we learnt to turn it on a minimum of ten minutes before showering, to allow the hot water to come through, but even then the flow was very poor. Surely an electric shower is needed. We would add that the bed is a lot less comfortable than the other two. And we were woken up in the early hours by the TV standby light flashing red and green.
-
"In general, Lanterns is a highly desirable holiday property with numerous positives."
[we are already booked for next year]. A couple of things worth a mention, but not as a complaint ! Although generally clean, there were a number of dusty corners visible and the freezer needed a light clean. The extractor in the last bedroom on the right was not working. The hot water is extremely slow to flow in the kitchen and linked to this, the shower in the bedroom on the left [not near the entrance] is very sluggish and a good 5 minute wait needed for hot water to come through. We love many aspects of this property however and would not wish to sound unduly negative. The above comments are made in order to provide the owners with helpful feedback. A final comment - the kitchen saucepans are looking the worse for wear and some utility knives are damaged [handle separating]. As stated however, this property is superb, in both location, design and overall facilities.
-
"This a pertains to the far bedroom en- suite ."
Bottom of toilet bowl was dirty brown stained - had to clean with bleach. Rubber shower mat - blackened with age and dirt on the back of it.; so wasn’t used. Also didn’t use the far shower because of it. Extractor fan in the far bedroom suite didn’t work. Otherwise, all else was ok. Julie Longson.
-
"We had a lovely stay at lanterns and the cottage was very comfortable."
However it would have been nice to have some soap in the bathrooms and maybe a pint of milk and some other necessities when we arrived. We had had a 7 hour journey to get there and couldn’t even make a cup of tea/coffee as there were none of those either. I minor gripe but it would’ve been welcome to have a few of these supplies to get us going.
-
"Perfect location."
We chose this property as we wanted drive way parking rather than roadside. On the edge of the village we were only a 10 min walk across the fields on good path to the village centre. The property itself was beautifully equipped and furnished. It was spotlessly clean. When you pay a premium price you hope your selection will meet expectations, we were very happy with our choice. We enjoyed a wonderful week, thank you.
-
"Lanterns was very comfortable."
We did have issues with the hot water in the main bedroom and also felt a tremendous amount of water was wasted while waiting for hot water to come through. Some areas needs a bit of TLC .We found some broken drinking glass , which we left on the side in kitchen. The bedrooms at the from could do with black out blinds as the early mornings were waking some of up
-
"This property was exceptional and we absolutely loved it."
The owners have done a brilliant job. It was beautifully presented and had everything we needed for our stay. We certainly won't hesitate to come back. The area is so peaceful and just a short walk into Grasmere. We had such a relaxing break.
-
"Absolutely stunning accommodation, lovely location and very quiet and peaceful."
Already booked to come back!
-
"Beautiful property in a fantastic location, shame it’s not instant hot water, takes a very long time to come through."
No issues with showers.
-
"Beautiful cottage, clean, comfortable and well equipped."
Great location for many walks from the doorstep or using buses. Loved it!! Top class cottage.
-
"Wonderful stay - we were a group of four and luckily we met the owner on site who told us one of the showers wasn't working great - but it didn't affect us or our stay."
Lovely and comfortable with everything we needed including comfy beds - a must after a walk. Things we would have liked added Bath mats - we ended us using hand towels to stand on which isn't ideal
-
"One of the best we have stayed in very clean and spacious and plenty of equipment, in a beautiful area"
-
"The shower in the double front bedroom still doesn't have enough power to use."
This has been the case for 3years, even though some water pressure work has been undertaken. The family shower has improved in pressure but sadly not the above. The master en suite water pressure has always been ok.
-
"Third trip to the Lanterns."
Just love this cottage. Spacious, clean and well furnished. Sad to leave after a fantastic week.
-
"Great cottage, great location."
Very well equipped for family entertainment after daily adventures. Would love to return.
-
"On arrival we found that the house had not been cleaned."
The key pad numbers given to us had not been changed from previous holiday makers or we would not have been able to get the key. The outside area had not been maintained as leaves all over and a rotting bird which had been there a while. However the inside once cleaned was excellent. On returning home we took our issues up with Sykes cottages and failed to get the customer care that we used to receive from lakelovers. They said they had contacted the owners who apologised but said it was not there responsibility. Sykes cottages just said case is now closed. No one seemed to take responsibility for our concerns.
-
"This is our 3rd stay in this property, and finally the showers have a pump and the central hot water system works reliably."
This is a very comfortable property with good beds and plenty of space, close enough to Grasmere but without the issues of being in the centre. The property was spotless on arrival and once again contributed to a great 2 week stay, even though postponed from 12 months ago due to covid.
-
"Lovely home."
Well equipped with everything you need for a great holiday. Lovely and clean with Carex hand wash and gel in every bathroom and the kitchen. Would not hesitate to book The Lanterns again 10 out of 10
-
"Awesome cottage according to our grandchildren- they were right."
The cottage is in a great quiet location on the outskirts of Grasmere with all fixtures and fittings top quality. A great time was had by all.
-
"This is our second stay at this cottage, and the condition and standard was excellent."
This cottage is only a short walk from many walks for both the adventurous, or those looking for a lower lever amble. Minor issue with hot water controls and a wasp nest was quickly dealt with by maintenance team.
-

About the location
GRASMERE
Ambleside 5 miles; Windermere 9 miles; Keswick 13 miles.
Situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park is the lovely village of Grasmere, probably best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found". Any visit to Grasmere needs to include The Grasmere Gingerbread shop, where the Wilson family has been making gingerbread for over 60 years. Also in the village are a number of shops, pubs, a church which dates back to the 13th century, and Grasmere Lake. Grasmere Sports takes place every August, where you can watch participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland wrestling. Just five miles away is the town of Ambleside and Lake Winderemere where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants and the 17th century Bridge House, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Cruises, boat trips and watersports can all be enjoyed on Lake Windermere, and the towns of Windermere and Keswick are also within driving distance.
