  • "We were delighted with Highgate."

It was spacious, comfortable, clean and very well equipped. We had a wonderful week celebrating a 70th birthday with our family. The garden was great for the two dogs and our granddaughter was able to ride her bike safely in the yard. The welcome pack was very thoughtful and very generous. We would love to come back.

Hello Judith, It was a pleasure to meet you and your family. Thank you for leaving the house so neat and tidy, our housekeeping team really appreciated it. It doesn’t always happen! We would love to welcome you all back whenever you’d like. All the best, Kate. Property Owner

  • "The number given isn't the owners but a rental company."

The week was unseasonably cold and although the radiators were on they were on a timer. As the weather was very wet a lot of time was spent in the house which was cold during the day. Nothing was left to be able to light the fire. The towels were small and took ages to dry. No spares were available. However on a positive note the kitchen was very well equipped. We even found a Ninja in the cupboard!

Hello Richard, It is frustrating when the weather in the Lakes in summer isn’t sunny but that’s the joy of the Lakes, you never know what you’ll get. I’m sorry that affected your holiday and made you so unhappy. Always helpful to get constructive feedback. Let’s see if I can clear a few things up (which I could have done if you’d managed to phone or email me during your stay, rather than complaining after the event when I’m unable to remedy the issue). I left a handwritten note in the welcome hamper, as i always do, with my contact details on: email and phone number. There’s also a welcome card in the hamper with my contact details on. Additionally you could have contacted me directly on the Sykes/Lakelovers’s messaging service. If you missed all of that you could have contacted the agency who would have contacted me. I then could have adjusted the heating for you. We don’t leave logs and kindling for the fire, but you could have gone and bought some at many local shops. We provide two towels for each guest. When you are self-catering you don’t get spare towels generally speaking, but you could have turned on the towel rails in each of the five shower rooms and that would have dried your towels. All the best, Kate Property Owner

  • "Beautiful home to stay in."

Only a couple of issues we encountered. 1) The amount of webs and dust/dead flies and spiders around windows was very unpleasant. We didn't want to open windows as we were faced with all this dirt. 2) only one towel per guest which wasn't ideal when staying a full week 3) tumble dryer is useless. We had to dry clothes outside and they were still very damp due to on and off rain. 4) Garden furniture for the front garden would be ideal as we didn't want to sit outside on the gravel when we had such a lovely front garden to use 5) More supplies for dealing with the swarm of flies as they were everywhere.

Hello Gemma, Thanks for your review. We’re sorry you thought there were a lot of flies. Being in the countryside you do get flies every now and again. We do leave fly spray and fly papers for you to use. The tumble dryer just needed the filter cleaning, You should have been left one bath towel and a hand towel per person. I always check each changeover, before guests check-in, so I’m sorry if I missed that. We have some chairs in the front garden and a full set of garden furniture in the courtyard at the back. Guests are welcome to move a few more chairs in to the front garden if they like. I always leave a letter with my contact details in the property and I send an email to you before your arrival. It’s often best to tell the owner during your stay if there’s a problem and they can help you with it at the time. All the best, Kate. Property Owner

  • "We absolutely loved this property and would come back again."

It was very well equipped and comfortable we had a great time despite the dreadful weather. The welcome basket was very much appreciated. Our dog was the most chilled he has ever been away from home! He loved to sleep in the downstairs bedroom sitting area where we put his bed and he could get away from the usual family noise. The closeness to the road was not an issue and we couldn't hear the traffic in the house. The only downside was the strong smell of damp in the downstairs bedroom/sitting area and ensuite, presumably because part of that part of the house is below ground level. It improved with heating but did not dissipate completely. Our party also reported a smell of damp in the 2 ensures upstairs. If these issues could be addressed it wild make a great improvement, however it would definitely not stop us staying here again. Also the outside seating area (not used due to poor weather) does not match up to the photos online which were obviously taken some time ago, so was a bit disappointing, The pile of dog poo bags at the gate to the garden was not ours and were pointed out to the housekeeper on check-out; a shame some people can't clear up properly after their dogs.

Thanks so much for your feedback and we’d love to welcome you back any time. It’s some times difficult as an owner getting a balance between making guests feel at home and giving them too many instructions! Highgate is an old house but when it was renovated, the downstairs bedroom was damp-proofed and tanked. I’ve had it checked and it’s not damp. However I accept that it and the en-suites rooms might smell damp to some people at times. I’ve now put in the guest information some suggestions to help; eg don’t turn the fans off in the en-suites and open doors and or windows where appropriate to allow the water vapour to evaporate. Also it can be helpful to open windows as if you have the heating turned up and and lots of people having shower, (there are 5 shower/bathrooms); it might feel damp. Some times one set of guests turn the heating off in rooms, but it can mean that room takes a little bit of time to heat back up for the next guests. Apologies for the long response but as you’d been kind enough to give a comprehensive review, I felt you deserved a full response. As to the garden, that hasn’t been up to our usual standard, just for the last few months. My gardener has to have an operation so we have had to manage without a professional gardener. Fortunately although my gardener is too ill to return, I have got someone for next season. All the best, Kate and the team, minus a gardener! Property Owner

Highgate is very private and not overlooked by another property. The kitchen is very well equipped which was great when cooking Christmas dinner.
