  • "A wonderful cottage."

Warm clean and cosy. The beds were so comfortable with lovely bedding. The cottage was well equipped. There is no Wi-Fi, but that means you can really relax. The location is spectacular, with view over the fields, reservoir and hills. The ample sized garden is completely dog secure and the property is very dog friendly. The peace and quiet makes this cottage very special. I would certainly book again.

The walks from the door were superb. The owners live next door but do not intrude and the place felt completely private - but they are there if you need them. The back garden is dog proof. Pleasant three mile walks (can easily do a circular walk) to a decent pub

The views are spectacular ( especially in the snow !) , very private , in-fact the photographs don’t do it justice. The owners were very friendly and helpful and the cottage was well equipped . The local farmers and other cottage owners were also very friendly and the roads were kept clear in the snow making it easy to explore the area. We would love to return in the future !

We didn't get to use the garden unfortunately as the weather was atrocious for all the time we were there nothing but rain and high winds but we wanted a chill break and that is what we had. ...It’s a shame because the Lodge itself,is in such a nice area, and comfy, but anyone with any disability or more elderly would find the Lodge bathroom hard to navigate.

The cottage was very clean, well equipped and comfortable. It is in a wonderful location with amazing views. The garden and surrounding area was full of birds and many an hour could be spent just sat in the garden or porch watching them. There are walks straight from the door on the very quiet lanes and footpaths. A walk up the lane above the cottage past Howgill Grange and Botany farms gives amazing 360 degree views. Hannah's meadow nature reserve is a pleasant walk along the road and back along the reservoir. We also enjoyed a walk along the Tees Railway path from Mickleton to Middleton in Teesdale too where we had a very good a lunch at Forrester's French restaurant and bar. Thank you to Ali and Chris for a wonderful week. We would definitely love to return.

A broad selection of utensils were available but missing a basic few. It was disappointing to find the TV was not working, something that should have been identified and rectified before we arrived. We found our phones were not getting good reception, so, after a texted conversation relating to the internet access and code given for access not working and requests for assistance with the TV, both were resolved by the owners when they returned. Simple things like a tea strainer or cafetiere would have been helpful as making fresh coffee was a bit of a challenge with nothing to stop the coffee ground when pouring.

Also makes for a good walk, though a bit muddy with all the rain over the last week. This is very well equipped cottage with a good range of kitchen utensils, books etc. Nice touch having milk and cake there on arrival, thank you. I have a Jack Russell terrier which I felt was saver keeping on a lead when ever we were outside as there are sheep in the fields around the cottage. About the location

BALDERSDALE

Barnard Castle 9.3 miles.

A dale branching off Teesdale, Baldersdale is made up of a small cluster of hamlets and farm dwellings overlooking the reservoirs of Hury, Blackton and Balderhead. Baldersdale came to fame as the home of Hannah Hauxwell, who featured on television in the 1970s for single-handedly running her farm from her home, which had no running water. 'Hannah's Meadow' is now managed by Durham Wildlife Trust as a nature reserve. The village of Romaldkirk is nearby, one of the most unspoilt villages in Teesdale, with pretty greens, old stone cottages, a beautiful old church and two pubs, one of which won AA Pub of the Year for England in 2003 and serves excellent restaurant and bar meals. The area is surrounded by breathtaking Dales countryside and makes an ideal base for walking and touring throughout North Yorkshire and the Yorkshire Dales, with superb fell, flat and river walks and cycle rides available from the doorstep. The northern Lakes and the cities of Durham and Newcastle are all within easy driving distance, whilst the ancient market town of Barnard Castle, with its many historical and cultural attractions, is just a 15 minute drive away.
