  • "Directions were incorrect - the house was on the right not the left and due to the gates having been repainted was not easily recognisable from the photos."

Whilst the garden was very pretty, the grass was extremely long which made it difficult to enjoy, and possibly contributed to us being heavily bitten whilst there, very unusual for us (and we live in the countryside normally). There were no instructions for the property such as for bins etc, or how to use anything. There were leaflets for days out, but some very ‘local’ information would also be helpful, such as walking to Shap village too. The property was clean and tidy, and we understand in an old property there would creaky floorboards etc but the main bed in particular was very creaky which I’m sure could be improved. It would also have been helpful to have been prepared for the exceptionally narrow road to the village, as whilst we are familiar with country roads, this is particularly narrow for a small portion.

Thank you for your feedback. I think a detailed response is needed. Sykes changed the original directions to the house without letting me know and they were incorrect , coming from Shap the house is on the right. Keld is a small hamlet and the house is unique so easy to recognise from the photos. The gardener who has looked after the garden for some while for personal reasons was unable to cut the grass before you arrived. A new gardener is now in place, my neighbours did tell me it was long but not extremely but I do accept it should have been cut sooner. There is a yellow file in the dining room with instructions/manuals/local information including for the bins. The housekeeper confirmed it is still in there. The recycling bags have printed on them what to put in. In any event there are 2 large lidded bins at the rear of the house. Leaving rubbish outside of the bins as you did will attract midges/insects, One overdue cut of the grass would not make any discernible difference to midges it is the damp conditions and leaving rubbish out which does. The area always has midges in summer along with other parts of the country. You need to cover up or put on a repellent when outside in a rural area like Keld in August if you are prone to being bitten. There is one road into Keld which comes from Shap, not sure any further explanation is needed as to how to walk there. There are footpaths but they take longer and none of the locals use them. The double bed has never been creaky but iy is being checked. The creaky floorboards are in the other bedroom and not under the beds where there are rugs. The double bedroom is carpeted. There are many roads in Cumbria like Keld Lane with stone walls and passing bays. The road is wide enough for the rubbish lorries and a fire engine etc, it is no narrower than many others. The location was perfect, remote and some nice walks close by with beautiful views. We also loved the fells with the views of the horses, sheep and cows. We very much enjoyed our stay at the White House and would definitely come back in the future.

  • "The cottage was in a lovely hamlet, with a gorgeous cottage garden."

The cottage was full of character and was generally well equipped. The covers on the garden lounger chairs in the summer house were worn and leaking the foam padding and the main bedroom curtain rail was loose at the wall., but nothing to spoil a very enjoyable stay.

Pleased that you had an enjoyable stay in Keld and thank you for complimenting the garden and the character in the house. New loungers have been ordered and the curtain pole is being rehung into the stone wall. Property Owner

The cottage is comfortable and cosy with everything you need for a relaxing holiday. There is miles of walking right on the doorstep and also not too far from the lakes by car. The garden was lovely and secure for our dogs too. We would highly recommend this cottage and hope to return sometime.

  • "We had a lovely holiday staying in your property, such a great location to just switch off from everything."

I have already recommended the house to several of my friends with dogs as it was just the perfect location to walk them straight from the house. We have already spoken about booking again the next time we want to go to the lakes. The cottage was well maintained and has great facilities. A washing machine and dryer is such a bonus, especially after muddy walks. Also I loved the bath and spent several evenings relaxing with a book. We loved the wood-fire. The only down-side was the previous tenants had been smoking inside and the smell was quite strong. Obviously no fault of the owner as the no smoking rules are quite clear, just a shame. I did my best to try and lift the smell by opening all the windows/using air freshener but it will probably require some deep cleaning. Overall a wonderful holiday, we will definitely be back

Thank you for your feedback and that you had a wonderful holiday with your dogs. There has been a short gap since you left so a deep clean has been done and the smell of smoke has gone. I look forward to welcoming you and your dogs back. Property Owner

  • "We had a very nice stay at White House."

It is a lovely old period property in a very quiet location. Good base for visiting the area. Be prepared for a half hour walk to the nearest shop and pub. You can walk over the fields on the public footpaths or down the quiet country roads (no footpaths). The garden is nicely maintained (secure for dogs too) and the summer house is a perfect place to relax with a glass of wine and a good book. The house is warm and cozy. If you like oldy worldy and somewhere with a bit of character then you will enjoy your stay. I have to mention that the cleanliness is not up to scratch. We have dogs so our standards are a bit more relaxed than most but even we felt some aspects were unacceptable and will feed this back directly to Sykes.

I am pleased that you had a nice stay at White House and thank you for your kind comments. In respect of the issues about cleanliness these are under detailed investigation through Sykes and include the state of the property when you left and the number of occupants. Property Owner

  • "Ust as lovely as it looks in the pictures!"

Luxurious cottage in stunning village with incredible views! Thankyou for allowing us to stay, even though only 2 nights were available in this peak time. Garden secure & beautiful. Cottage excellent standard, lovely waterfall shower, clean & tidy. Had couple of maintenance things to report but Sykes / caretakers were quick to respond, so assume was sorted for the next people? These were that the wooden door covering the fridge door was hanging off and dangerous ( very heavy and ready to fall from a height). No tools available or we could have unscrewed the remaining hinge and at least made it safe. The kettle had a slow leak so sat in a puddle of water! Only other comment is that there were a few cobwebs ( handfuls when plugging things in!) and the towels were tiny/ thin. Have since visited 2 more Sykes cottages with thick large fluffy towels which emphasised the contrast. A note about the ‘short’ driveway might alsobe helpful to some - our average 4WD was a squeeze to close the gate, so had to unpack and let the dogs in/out with the gate open. A truck or van would not fit. Shap village very friendly & gorgeous abbey cafe on the high street. Greyhound inn great food again very friendly .Swimming pool was very cold. Nice to explore a different part of the lakes.

Thank you for your kind comments. The hinge on the fridge door was repaired just after you left as soon as I was made aware of it. A screw had worked itself loose and I had he whole door rehung. Under holiday let regulations not allowed to leave tools out which I agree would be helpful to do. I have replaced the kettle with a new one. My 4WD which is a GLC Mercedes fits in the drive with about 2 feet of space at the rear to the gate so luggage and dogs are easy to let out safely. Width wise two small cars can fit in. It is best to drive in tight to the low garden wall and not reverse in. Vans fit but the gate needs to be left open for them, workmen have regularly done this. Apologies for the towels, quality towels were provided but the laundry service on occasion mixes them up replacing mine with inferior towels belonging to other properties. This problem and your comments about cobwebs I have raised with the housekeepers. I am not sure if you are referring to my property on cobwebs as I have not ever found handfuls of them? Only had a very short break but wish we'd had longer. Garden is idyllic and the summer house fantastic. So peaceful surrounded by nature and farmland. Perfect for sheer relaxation.

Thank you for your kind comments. So pleased to see you enjoyed the garden and surrounds. The garden certainly needed a lot of work to revive it after I bought the property , it had been badly neglected for years. New planets are still appearing as it matures. In winter the top grassed area is covered in snowdrops. Property Owner

We chose it as we wanted to visit RSPB Haweswater: we were able to walk into Swindale from the cottage and later drove round to Haweswater itself for more walks.

So pleased you enjoyed your stay and the location worked so well for your interests. Swindale is such a worthwhile project. Property Owner

  • "Delightful small cottage in a tiny hamlet."

Characterful and charming. I’d have to get really picky to find fault - there is perhaps too much furniture in the dining room and it’s difficult to move in and out. But more generally this was a wonderful choice that gave access to the beautiful Lakes.

Thank you for your feedback. I may thin our some dining room furniture as you suggest as 6 dining chairs are not really needed for 4 people. Sometimes I have personally used the 2 spare chairs with visitors. I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner
