  • "The property is advertised as having WIFI but it does not have WIFI."

Suspect a fault with the router. The owner, Linda, does not respond to calls, texts or e mail when we tried to contact her for a resolution. This is a recurring theme if you look at other reviews. Sykes managed to contact Linda who, surprise surprise, said the WIFI was working. It isn't. The cottage itself was comfortable and good value for money but on the basis that communication is so poor I really wouldn't recommend it. You have to contact Linda for the key code before arrival and she does not respond to calls, e mails etc. The kitchen desperately needs a new set of saucepans, all the non-stick has come off. Yuk!

  • "We were delighted with the corner cottage."

Spotlessly clean ,comfortable and cosy. Everything we needed was there. It was great to be able just to walk minutes to the market square where shops etc are. The only little moan was that the garden furniture needs replaced. We will certainly return and recommend.

  • "Though the cottage as very nice and the location was brilliant for our needs, I was very disappointed with Sykes."

On our way to the cottage we were unable to contact the owner of the cottage on how to gain access, so we contacted Sykes. They said they would e-mail us with the access instructions. This they never did bearing in mind we were approximately an hour away. It was only good fortune that we were able to access the cottage.

  • "A lovely cottage, close to the centre of Kirkby Stephen."

Spar store almost next door is well stocked and friendly. A couple of very minor grumbles - there was no electric kettle (the hob one took a bit of getting used to) and I had to buy washing up liquid (left it for the next visitors). Lovely walks on the old railway line and beyond.

  • "PROS: excellent value for money."

Despite being a corner terrace is surprisingly spacious and well furnished with comfortable beds and sofas. Spick and span throughout with a pleasantly decorated bathroom. Brilliant location being only a few minutes walk from centre of Kirkby Stephen with plenty of pubs and cafes. Whilst staying there we also visited Barnard Castle, Richmond, Windermere, Smardale Gill and Hadrians Wall - all within (at the most) an hours drive away. CONS - we were told to contact owner for key. Tried an hour before arrival (no answer), tried again a few times whilst waiting outside cottage. Owner rang back to inform us there is a key safe in the back yard. Why Sykes doesn't let you know this beforehand I don't know. Be aware the cottage is on a corner with double yellows and a zebra crossing immediately outside. We found it easy to park across the road but in busier times might not always be possible. No instructions on how to recycle. Came back one day to find no electrics at all. Found fuse box but nothing had tripped. Rang owner. Never got back to us. Figured it out. There is a key you have to insert. Other people mentioned welcome pack. Not for us. Why not invest in an electric kettle? The kettle on the gas hob takes AGES to boil and must cost more. We bought a wine glass from a charity shop and thus DOUBLED the number of wine glasses on site! Come on guys - one wine glass! Although you now have two. Despite the above would recommend as a comfortable and economical base.

It was clean and comfortable with a well equipped kitchen and a relaxing sitting room. The master bedroom was nicely decorated and the mattress was comfortable - I slept very soundly. It was also good having an enclosed outdoor area for my dog to be in (just worth noting that there is a shared access path through it to the next door neighbours but that wasn’t an issue for us). It was my first visit to Kirkby Stephen and I will definitely be coming back to the area (and to Corner Cottage) again. Everything you need such as cleaning, kitchen things etc is provided for you and it's spotlessly clean. It's also in a good location for visiting surrounding areas. The only upset we had was the communal back garden access. There are three cottages joined together and they all gain access to their back yard via the corner cottage gate! So of course you can't lock it. Unfortunately, on our last night our dog needed to go out for a wee at 4am and we never realised that a neighbour had left our gate open so our dog got out! My husband and I had to go walking the streets in total despair trying to find him. It really was terrible! Because of that I would suggest that this cottage is not ideal for anyone with pets.

So many different places to visit/see: caves, waterfalls, fells, lakes, National Trust, English Heritage and of course the Settle to Carlisle train journey, and magnificent viaducts.
