  • "We’ve just had a lovely autumnal week in Nutwood."

None of us wanted to come home. It is perfectly situated for the ferry, steam train and aquarium on the doorstep which kept the kids entertained. Beautiful walks on the doorstep, kept the dogs happy (thankfully we are well attuned to keeping an eye out for ticks as we were finding several daily on our golden retriever). The cottage itself was warm and welcoming. Plenty of space for a family of four (with a bedroom to spare if you have grandparents joining). Only space for one car and no option to park on the road as it’s a private road owned by someone else - didn’t bother us as we had just one vehicle but something to be mindful of if you have two arms of family staying at once. Only tiny criticism, which we wouldn’t have noticed (as we had planned on not needing it) had our daughter not been car sick on the last day, is the washing machine doesn’t spin, meaning all her clothes and teddy were sopping wet. The tumble dryer wasn’t much help either (but that could have been user error). All in all fabulous stay at a great cottage and we all want to come back!

Thank you, We are pleased to hear that you really enjoyed your stay at Nutwood. Sorry you had a problem with the washing machine. Just checked & the spin worked perfectly, maybe it was on the wrong setting. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Property Owner

The accommodation smelt a bit damp in some places and was a little dated although it looked as if a few trees had been cut down and the garden tidied up which will benefit in the long term. Overall it was fine for us and the parking was fine for 2 - 3 cars, no issues from the neighbours.

  • "A charming bungalow in an excellent location close to the steamers ferry and steam train at Lakeside."

There was plenty of space for all of us. Bungalow had a retro feel, the conservatory was a welcome addition for another sitting area. Garden very secure for our dog, although on many levels which some may struggle with. We had read previous comments re parking . We managed to get 2 cars in the drive comfortably, an ionic 5 and a Renault Modus. It was clear that the owner of the road would not allow any parking not on the drive, and indeed they objected to the bins being left on their property on bin day and moved them off the road. Having said that the cul de sac was quiet, hardly saw any neighbours and they were very polite in their note asking us not to put the bin other than on the bungalow land. ( everyone else on the road had cars parked on the kerbside and had their bins out all week) . Overall a most relaxing and enjoyable stay. We would suggest a bigger shower head as the one there currently is a bit on the small size and a larger head would make better use of the excellent water pressure and abundant hot water. Thank you.

The property is in a great location and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The bins and parking a little bit of an issue but didn't spoil the holiday. We did have a note put on the car when we arrived advising if we continued to park o the kerbside we would be expected to pay £10 an hour.

  • "Lovely bungalow in a lovely quiet area."

Though clean enough, I think greater care could be taken to make it spotless. Quite a few cobwebs which made it feel a little unloved. Please be aware the bungalow is on a private road, this isn't mentioned in the write up. There is a note on arrival staring you can't park on the road or curb as its privately owned by no. 11 ... who tbh seem very unhappy about having the bungalow as a holiday let! We did manage, after words with no. 11, to get 2 cars mostly parked on the driveway. Bin was stolen by a neighbour who filled it with garden waste and returned it after the bins had been emptied, meaning we couldn't dispose of any rubbish. The neighbours behaviour made us feel unwelcome though this isn't something the owner of the bungalow can do much about ... but is probably a reason we wouldn't return.

Incase your wondering, the wife and my 92 year old mother took the other two couches. The bungalow is a little tired in places but nothing major. My little Chihuahua loves a little bit of grass to run around on, but being surrounded by conifers I know that grass just doesn't live long. But put my moaning to one side, we had a fantastic stay, the beds were comfortable, it was clean and well equipped, a beautiful quiet place to return to after a long day out. We would have no quibbles staying there again, it would be a great pleasure. A big thank you to the owners, your doing a super job.

Nice square lounge with big TV and very comfortable main bedroom. Great location as walking distance to hotel and spa, boats journeys up lake Windermere and steam train to Haverthwaite. Not far to woods for dog walking and walked to Newby Bridge. Little issue of what day the bin was supposed to be collected as stated Thursday in kitchen and different day in folder so put out Thursday and Friday but still not collected so clarity on this would be useful.

The bungalow was nice and warm, clean and tastefully furnished. All the facilities worked perfectly, cooker, shower etc. The location is handy for Lakeside for the hotel and we also took the boat to Bowness and back. It’s also a short drive to Newby Bridge and the Swan. We had a great week with lots of fell walking in spite of the weather. Thanks.

  • "It's with deep regret that I feel I need to leave such negative feedback but there's so many problems with the property."

Some were mentioned prior to my stay and was given assurances that they'd been sorted. The central wasn't working on arrival but on Monday morning the heating engineer turned up unannounced as we were getting ready to go out. We waited whilst he fixed the heating. We were shown an override giving us just 3 hours of constant heating. That being said it still didn't work properly and was hit and miss whether it would come on or not. Some days we needed a warm house to return back to after being out in the pouring rain and wind for hours. There's black mould on the bathroom ceiling and green mould on the shower screen plastic seal. The property has a musty damp smell. And due to their being no central heating the rooms felt damp too. Outside of the property the seating areas are dirty and untidy so we didn't take advantage of this during our stay and we had a few nice evenings but had to spend indoors. The decked area outside of the living room was extremely slippy so again it made it difficult for us use this. There's no lights outside and when it went dark you couldn't see without the use of a torch. No personal touches by the owner. We've stayed in cottages before were the owners have left tea, milk and biscuits, bottles of wine as a welcome and thank you gift along with a thank you note. The location isn't as described either as the local pub was more than just a few minutes away, not as stated in the listing. The only benefit to us is that we could visit other areas of the lake district and the lake cruise and train was great. I've taken photos of the property should you need anything further. I've also emailed your CEO as we want to raise a complaint about the state of the property we rented out in good faith according to the rave reviews and the listing. We were ready to come home after 2 days but the fact we had spent £800 on our holiday we decided to use it as a base for us to explore the lakes, and ate out every evening. The crockery is all chipped and damaged too. Conservatory is cold and damp, smells too and there's a window which has a broken seal so the glass is steamed up. Windows are dirty inside the window frames and the glass needs a clean too.

Thank you very much taking time to leave a review of your recent stay at Nutwood. We are sorry to hear about the issues you encountered. Nutwood's had an issue with the heating earlier this year, that's been resolved with installing a new thermostat.Unfortunately this new thermostat lost power during your stay, which was unforeseen and why the engineer arrived on Monday to fix it for you. We will speak to the Owners about the mould you described to ensure this is resolved and can see your in discussion with our Customer Service team. Welcome packs are down to the discretion of each individual owner and do tend to vary from property to property. There are two fabulous eateries not far from the property, The Lakeside Hotel with bar and two restaurants (4 minutes walk) and The Swan Hotel with Bistro that's 18 minutes walk or 4 minute drive. • "I would like to complain about the property, the property was filthy, cobwebs, dead flies inside, the carpets had not been hoovered and the laminate dirty, mould on the edge of the bath, the only thing clean was the bedding."

The garden was unkept with nowhere to sit but rotten furniture. I spoke to Sykes Friday and the cleaner couldn’t come until Saturday but that was too little too late as we checked out Sunday. It’s disgusting for the money we paid for the cottage. My mother is terminally poorly with cancer and the risk of infection from the filthy cottage is not acceptable. Also when we arrived the lady at no11 blocked are car in and told us she owned the road and we could not park, this should be mentioned in the write up. The property needs maintenance and updating.

  • "In a lovely area close to lake, train and outdoor facilities The bungalow needs the outside area tidying up and managed as all the places to sit are surrounded by weeds etc."

Needs a gardener going every other week to keep on top of it. As mentioned in previous review heating wasn’t working even though Sykes said it was. Lots of electric heaters to use but in the autumn, winter and spring months this would not be sufficient to keep it warm. Also the bathroom needs attention particularly the shower area, mildew and poor shower. If there had been 6 of us it would be a struggle. Overall enjoyed our stay

  • "Location is excellent, beautiful surroundings."

Only a few hundred yards from Lakeside ferry Port and the Lakeside and Haverthwaite steam engine station. With Fell foot park directly across the lake. 5 min ferry crossing, which is £5 return, goes 2 or 3 times an hour. Journeys to Bowness and Ambleside frequent also on the Ferry. As you are at the Lake District, beautiful walks can easily be found with a bit of research. The slight negatives are access away from Nutwood are a bit dodgy, there are no pavements on the main roads, so you must walk on the road here and there. The house is comfortable and has everything you need, with good WiFi. On closer inspection it could do with a better clean, for example the log burner hasn't been cleaned and full of Ash, and there is a jigsaw puzzle almost assembled under the rug in the front room. Probably shouldn't be missed when hoovering. The garden needs weeding and tidying up, to make it feel more comfortable when sitting out. Don't like being picky, just a little TLC here and there. Overall though, it's lovely.

  • "Unfortunately the problem started before we even arrived."

We were called en-route to say that the heating and hot water were not working, that they had left some portable heaters in the house and to leave the hot water immersion on during our stay. This was fine considering it was summer but would have been a problem in winter, and the water was so boiling because the immersion was constantly on that it actually became dangerous. Having looked back at previous reviews I can see that the heating has been an issue for well over a year. Why has this not been addressed? Additionally, the cleanliness of the property is poor. It was very dusty everywhere including areas like the top of picture frames and radiators and bedside tables etc. The major problem is the finish of the decor. There was mould on the bathroom ceiling and blinds, and actual moss growing on the inside of the conservatory windows. The sealant round the bath and kitchen sink was completely black with mould and we all avoided taking baths the whole week as it was really off putting The wallpaper in the kitchen ceiling was hanging off (again, mentioned in the reviews months ago) and in general, the house just needs re-decorated completely due to dirty walls and chipped paintwork etc. It is unfortunate that this review does not allow photographs because I documented all of these problems to show where work needs done. The house only has one lavatory, and there is no hand sink in the room with the toilet so you have to come out of the toilet to go into the other room to wash your hands, which is not really convenient. The other room only has a bath with shower attachment, and a sink, no toilet. While we knew there was only one bathroom, we did expect there to be a small sink to wash your hands in the room with the toilet. The kitchen is pretty well equipped, though tired, and there was everything we needed in there for the week. The beds are very comfortable which was a plus. The location of the cottage is nice but be aware that, even though it is described as being within "walking" distance to a lot of places, this is actually pretty impossible and dangerous as there are no pavements! We were unable to walk anywhere with our dog as there was no safe way to do this. The grounds of the cottage could be spectacular, but again, they have been left to go into disrepair and the garden needs a good overhaul and general tidy. There were two wasps nests (one at the garage and one under a tree as you enter the property) so we did not spend much time in the garden. If this cottage was redecorated and cleaned, and the grounds tidied up, it would be a really nice holiday home, but as is currently presented, we do not feel it is suitable for a future holiday. It really needs a lot of money spent on it, and considering it costs well in excess of £2K to rent in some summer months, this should be invested in bringing the home up to standard.

  • "The heating was not working, there was was no pressure in the shower and temperature control was fiddly."

It would have been nice to have had a few condiments available plus tea, coffee and sugar. We arrived very late after a very long journey only to find no shops open and unable to have anything other than water. The bungalow itself was very spacious inside and well set out plus the garden was fully enclosed for our puppy which was nice. Due to time of year there were wasps which had obviously made a home by the garage in the garden this was a little annoying.

Thank you for your comments. We are pleased that you enjoyed the garden and that you found the property to be spacious. As the property is self catering, condiments and tea and coffee are not always provided. We understand that our Maintenance Team did attend to try and resolve the issue that you experienced with the heating, and water pressure, but they were unable to resolve at the time. The team will be re attending to resolve the issue. We will ask our Maintenance Team to look into the wasps. Thank you- The Lakelovers Owner Relations Team Property Owner

The property feels like it is intended to be somebody’s home, it has been tastefully decorated and equipped with good quality furniture and comfortable beds. The off street parking is good, but there are notices warning against parking on the road. You have full use of the whole bungalow, except for a small cupboard in the kitchen labelled ‘owners cupboard’. The property was spacious, beds were comfortable, but some areas of the cottage would benefit from a deep clean/TLC. Sadly, the property had not been cleaned to a good standard, meaning we had to purchase cleaning equipment and carry out various cleaning chores in order for us to be comfortable living there for a week. Externally, the property had wrap around gardens, probably not ideal for young children, which would benefit from some tidying, cleaning and maintenance. Lots of cobwebs around the summer house and windows. Final point, some towel rails or hooks in each of the bedrooms would be ideal. We had a lovely week visiting some beautiful places, such as Coniston, Fell Foot, Hill Top, Wray Castle, Bowness, and taking part in lots of watersports and boat trips. The location was excellent, turn right out of the close and you are only a 5 minute walk from the Lakeside Steamer, Haverthwaite Steam Railway, the aquarium and a hotel, turn left and it is only a 5 minute walk to a lovely wooded, hillside walk. There is no pavement, so care does need to be taken when walking to both, but we managed easily with children, a buggy, a cockapoo and a Labrador. Despite the proximity to Lake activities, the cottage and it’s garden were peaceful and quiet - with only the occasional toot from the steam train. This area of the Lakes is beautiful, and there are loads of places to hike and bike, and even at half term, the smaller roads and walking trails were quiet and tranquil. Lakeside is renowned as a peaceful Lake District holiday destination, nestled around the southern tip of Lake Windermere and away from the hustle and bustle of the busier areas.

But despite this, you'll find a wealth of things to see and do within easy reach - whatever your holiday tastes. Windermere Lake Cruises depart from Lakeside Pier, and cruise the full length of Lake Windermere to Bowness and Ambleside - a wonderfully stress-free way to explore.

You'll find plenty of walking routes in the area; including Alfred Wainwright's Finsthwaite Heights route from Newby Bridge (adjacent to Lakeside) and up to High Dam for more lovely walks & perhaps a wild swim.

Lake District historic sites such as Holker Hall and Gardens, Cartmel Priory & village, Stott Park Bobbin Mill, Sizergh Castle and Levens Hall are all within easy reach by car, with no need to navigate through busy tourist areas. Further north, you’ll discover Esthwaite Water and the landscapes that famously inspired the children's author Beatrix Potter.

Her former home can be visited at Hill Top, in the small village of Near Sawrey, then onward and you'll reach Hawkshead village - a wonderful place to while away a day, exploring quaint cobbled streets and a blissfully car-free village centre.

About the location

LAKESIDE

Newby Bridge 1.2 miles; Bowness-on-Windermere 8.7 miles.

Set on the southern shores of Lake Windermere, the small, sleepy hamlet of Lakeside offers a peaceful getaway location, hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the Lake District’s popular attractions, but still within easy reach of them. Whether you decide to discover the area in the car, by foot, bike, boat or steam, there’s plenty to see nearby to keep the whole family content. The ferry dock offers the chance to travel by boat to Waterhead or Bowness, or take a shorter trip to the National Trust’s Fell Foot Park, across the water, which offers pretty grounds set alongside the very tip of the lake, providing plenty of places for picnics, paddling, games and gentle strolls on sunny afternoons. Situated alongside the Lakeside Station is the long-standing Lakeside and Haverwaithe Railway, home to Britain’s oldest standard gauge steam engine, on which you can travel back in time along this well-loved Heritage line, and where little ones will delight in meeting Thomas and his friends. Visit the Lakes Aquarium to uncover the often-secretive world of life below water, where you’ll chance upon hundreds of captivating creatures that feature in the surrounding rivers, lakes and sea. There are wonderful, well-signed walks to be enjoyed in the immediate area, including the 5-mile route to Finsthwaite’s High Dam, which trails from Lakeside through pleasant woodlands and meadows. Lakeside offers an exclusive holiday location with all of the Lake District’s delights at your fingertips.
