"Need at least one decent full length mirror."
Also dressing table and mirror for the top bedroom. Bathroom light far too dim. Nice period bath but too high to get into, especially for a slightly infirm person. Full width walk in shower with seat would be better option. In the kitchen at least one tea towel would have been appreciated. Overall accommodation is first rate, other than the above points.
Very glad you had a great time in Castle Hill and that we were able to accommodate you at the last minute. I've drawn your comments about tea towels to the cleaners - please accept my apology for the lack of them. They are normally provided as you would expect. Indeed, we've aimed to equip the property with furniture in keeping with the the house's Georgian character. Yes, the bath is rather deep and could be tricky to get into if anyone is of limited mobility. A full length mirror is on the way and a new bulb for the bathroom! Thanks for your kind comments. "This was all pretty much perfect."
We loved the house, incredibly comfortable and welcoming. Location is spot on - and the history of the location, alongside the age of the house makes it all very memorable.
Great Joe. Very pleased to host you on your return to Lancaster! Property Owner

"We had a brilliant few days at Castle Hill."
Quirky, interesting old house. Warm, with very comfy beds and sofas. Right next to the castle which has a gorgeous cafe. Easy to walk from the train station. Lovely walks by the River Lune. Recommend the Herbarium restaurant for the best vegan breakfast ever!
Absolutely right - you can be on the train station platform from 5 Castle Hill in just 5 minutes or strolling through the city centre in the same time. The café in the castle grounds is a real find, too - glad you enjoyed. Welcome back to Lancaster! Property Owner

"We had a fantastic few days staying in this charming old house."
5 Castle Hill is superbly situated on a cobbled street just a stones throw from Lancaster Castle - a really atmospheric setting and perfect for anyone interested in the history of the city. It’s also extremely central with easy walking access to shops, museums, restaurants and pubs. The house itself is well furnished and equipped with everything you could need, including an off-road parking space which was much appreciated. There was plenty of room for a family of four with space to sit and relax both in the kitchen and sitting room. Communication with the host, James, was very friendly and helpful.
I'm always on hand to help out with any questions and will do everything I can to make your stay perfect. I'm delighted you enjoyed your stay in 5 Castle Hill and you're welcome back to Lancaster soon! James Property Owner

The property
5 Castle Hill is a beautiful Georgian townhouse with stunning views of the castle in the historic city of Lancaster, barely 100m from the 15th century gatehouse of Lancaster Castle.
This Grade II listed building was constructed in the late 1700s on the very same location as Lancaster’s ancient Roman Fort and enjoys enviable views of the castle ramparts, cobbled streets and classic Georgian architecture dating from Lancaster’s golden age, over two hundred and fifty years ago.
Unusually, for a prime city centre location like this, 5 Castle Hill also has free, unlimited parking.
As soon as you enter 5 Castle Hill, you’ll notice the period features which give this property its very special character: traditional Georgian sash windows throughout the house, ornate ceiling roses in the sitting room and decorative newel caps atop the staircase newel posts inlaid with mother of pearl, this property exudes Georgian elegance and style at every turn.
On the ground floor you’ll find a spacious kitchen and dining room which spans the entire width of the house, access is possible from Castle Hill to the fore and the car park (Castle Grove) to the rear, there’s also a handy downstairs toilet and washbasin located off the kitchen and a small courtyard, also to the rear, with outdoor seating.
Immediately upstairs, on the first floor, you’ll find the sitting room with its roughly-hewn floorboards, window seats and period shutters, the high ceiling is decorated with ceiling roses and the views of Lancaster Castle are just as stunning as you’d imagine, take a seat, enjoy the view and soak up the history: Lancaster’s most notorious trial, that of the Pendle Witches of 1612, played out in the castle outside your window; world-renowned furniture maker, Gillows, crafted their fine cabinets next-door-but-one; whilst the Judges’ Lodgings, arguably the city’s finest Georgian building dating from 1625, is right opposite.
Facing the sitting room, you’ll find the house’s largest bedroom with generously-wide wooden floorboards and king-size bed, overlooking the courtyard.
Upstairs again, on the top floor, there are two bedrooms (each with a double bed) which enjoy superlative views of the castle ramparts, 5 Castle Hill is one of the few places that can boast a castle view from your bed, plus, there are views of the Lancaster landmark, the Ashton Memorial (see below), from up here, too!
You’ll find the generously-sized bathroom complete with bath, shower and WC located on this floor.
Don’t forget, Lancaster’s location on the West Coast Mainline, means there are direct trains to all parts of the country: London, for example, is just approximately 2hr30min away, by hourly train; whilst Edinburgh is approximately 2hr; and Windermere barely 40min. What’s more, you can walk to the train station from 5 Castle Hill.
All of this awaits at 5 Castle Hill.
If you're looking for a smaller property in Lancaster, do consider 25 St George's Quay (Ref:1064141) which is under the same ownership as 5 Castle Hill
About the location
LANCASTER
Morecambe 3 miles; Windermere 30 miles; Blackpool 37 miles.
The historic city of Lancaster sits on edge of Morecambe Bay, the sea is barely 3 miles away. Equally, Lancaster is perfect if you’re looking to explore the Lake District, Windermere is just 30 miles away.
The tidal River Lune flows through the city and St George’s Quay, with its elegant Georgian warehouses standing eave to eave on the riverfront, is considered to be the finest example of an original 18th Century port anywhere in the country.
Indeed, Lancaster retains many examples of handsome Georgian architecture and the area around the castle, particularly Castle Hill, Castle Park and Nip Hill are considered its most alluring quarter.
Lancaster’s skyline is dominated by the Ashton Memorial, made of white Portland stone and dedicated to the second wife of millionaire industrialist, Lord Ashton, it’s built in Neo-Baroque style and affords spectacular views of Morecambe bay from its hilltop location in Williamson Park, open-air concerts are held throughout the summer in the park.
Foremost among Lancaster’s clutch of museums, the Maritime Museum is the place to get to grips with Lancaster’s role in the unsavoury slave trade, behind only London, Bristol and Liverpool, Lancaster was the fourth largest city engaged in the 18th Century trade of African slaves across the Atlantic.
In addition to the Lake District, some of northern England’s greatest scenery is right on your doorstep: the Forest of Bowland, the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Arnside & Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, all easily accessible, offer the perfect opportunity to discover nature in the raw. And don’t forget, Lancaster’s location on the West Coast Mainline, means there are direct trains to all parts of the country.
