  • "Had a lovely stay at Herdwick Heaf."

Though the house is small if felt lovely and warm and cosy, and I really appreciated the Christmas decorations - even festive teatowels! Also appreciated how clean it was, wasn't able to tell that it's a pets allowed property. Location was great for getting into the Western lakes and I'll definitely consider staying again. Only small recommendation to the owner is a chopping board would be handy - otherwise wanted for nothing!

  • "Great stay in a typical English cottage."

Nice and cosy, the owners did everything to make us feel very welcome, with flowers on the table, milk in the fridge, fleece on the bed for those cold evenings. Everything you can think of was there, in a theme with, not surprising, Herdwick sheep. One thing you should know, the cottage is not made for very tall people. My son is 6ft1 (1,85 meters) and I am just under 6 ft (1,80 meters) tall. Our feet were sticking out of our beds, not a real problem, but taller people over 1,85 meter should take notice to this.

  • "We stayed at Herdwick Heaf for 2 nights recently whilst completing sections of the Coast to Coast walk."

The accommodation was everything we needed - clean and comfortable - and we had a very relaxing stay. Beds are super comfy and the location very quiet. Provision of tea / coffee / milk and biscuits on arrival was very kind and welcome. Thank you. We also enjoyed a lovely meal at the Shepherds Arms hotel right next door. We had no problems with parking for x2 vehicles. The only potential drawback would be the steep stairs - which are a feature of such period properties. Provision of rails on both sides and good lighting in the stair area made this no issue for us. Thank you for looking after us whilst we stayed here. Would have no hesitation to recommend this property to other Coast to Coast walkers.

Thank you very much for your kind review, I’m really pleased you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

  • "Lovely cottage in ideal setting."

Nice touch with tea/milk provided. Clean and comfortable. The only issue was parking. The cottage had a driveway, but because of the local pub/hotel being next door. Customers of the pub would park across the drive.

Thank you for taking the time to review. Unfortunately the issue with the parking does seem to have got worse lately and it has been brought up to the hotel. Property Owner

  • "Small cosy cottage in good location."

Second bedroom needs a black out blind or curtains (it is far to bright to sleep in with just the thin roller blind that’s up) and the living room chairs aren’t very comfy. We also had an issue with parking when someone from the next door hotel parked over our driveway so we had to start parking on the road to ensure we could get out in a morning. On a positive though, the location of the cottage was handy to tick off some of the western fells and the double bed was comfy so we slept well. Also, the Fox and Hounds is a brilliant local pub which serves great food and beer so we’d highly recommend a visit.

  • "We were so lucky with the crisp sunny weather and had a lovely week."

The house was warm and comfortable as described. The forecast was for very cold weather so we took extra blankets but didn't need them. The stairs are steep but we were prepared. There was always plenty of hot water and all kitchen facilities worked fine though you would need to read the instructions booklet for the cooker, washing machine and all singing microwave. Both local pubs were great but we preferred the Fox and Hounds. Beautiful fell, mountain and lake walking, Ennerdale is a quiet but delightful valley and everyone was very friendly. One or two minor issues (which spoilt nothing): a larger firmer bed but that would reduce overall bedroom space; a radio in the kitchen would be a good touch and an ice cube tray in the freezer(there is an ice bucket), but overall, a lovely place. Thank you

  • "Herdwick Heaf Review My partner and I stayed at Herdwick Heaf during the latter part of November."

The overall feel of the cottage is one of cosiness and comfort. The cottage was nice and warm, and fixtures and fittings were finished to a high standard. However, we did feel there were one or two shortcomings: 1, By far the biggest thing we would say is that the stairs are very steep, and the 'landing' immediately at the top of the stairs is particularly so. The owners have made considerable effort to mitigate this, installing hand rails and a stair gate at the top of the stairs. It would be useful if there was a photograph of the landing and stairs on the website. Our advice to anyone who had any doubts in their balance and mobility NOT to stay here. 2, The back yard is not actually private, but is a shared space between houses along the terrace, and is entirely hard standing. There is no gate or fencing at all, so, it is not at all safe to let your dog out. Since our pooch is a little bit of a sociopath, we had to tentatively take him out on his lead. 3, The TV in the lounge receives its' reception by Freeview satellite, which, in itself is not a problem, but, it does mean that the channels are rather sporadically numbered. In order to alleviate frustration, it would be good if the owners could compile a list of the more popular channels that visitors may use. There are Apps on the TV too, so, this issue can be overcome to a certain extent. 4, It would be good if there were was another set of crockery/ cutlery. The cottage sleeps 3, and there is only 3 plates, dishes etc, which means it is necessary to wash up after every meal, or even every snack! Ennerdale Bridge itself is a beautiful area, there are loads of great walks nearby and the food at The Fox and Hounds and Shepherds Arms is excellent!

I’m sorry the cottage wasn’t to your liking. There are limitations to what can be done in this property, it can’t receive tv channels through a normal aerial due to the fact it’s in a dip. I did used to use a satellite box but it didn’t work properly and was always causing problems for guests. It is noted on the site about the stairs though as I am aware they will be difficult for some guests & it isn’t recommended to stay here if they have mobility issues. Property Owner

Also the double bed was very soft, not good if you have a bad back. Other than that it is really nice and next door to a hotel that sell lovely food

Thank you for your review. I’m sorry it wasn’t to your liking. The mattress has now been replaced but unfortunately there isn’t much I can do to change the seating as it is a small cottage Property Owner

Stairs are steep but mentioned in description and did not effect our stay. Only thing to mention there is no gate to yard so if you have a dog you need to keep an eye when they are out. We resolved this when we were sitting outside by attaching long lead to fence. Pub next door to home which was lovely and other pub in village was a two minute walk which served lovely food.

2 pints of milk, tea, coffee, sugar and a packet of biscuits were a lovely welcome after a long journey. Perfect location to get to lots of locations which will make your stay fantastic. A useful welcome folder was available to offer advice. The only way you could improve this place would be to put firmer mattresses in the bedrooms as we both have back problems and the soft mattresses aren't ideal. We would highly recommend this property to anyone who doesn't have bad backs.

  • "Sykes advert is misleading:- The advert states the property is dog friendly and has garden patio provision."

The reality is - the cottage itself is dog friendly inside but the outdoor space is only a hard standing which is not enclosed or safe for pets as it is shared with neighbouring properties and is open to the main road. There is no mention in the advert of the very steep internal staircase. There are only 11 steps to get to the first level as apposed to the standard 13 !! Once you reach the top there is a very narrow landing to access the bathroom and bedrooms. Whilst, fortunately we were both mobile enough to be able to cope with them many others less mobile would not be able to get upstairs. There was no provision provided for hanging coats or putting/storing/drying wet boots and shoes. This is very surprising given the location of the cottage and the outdoor activities the area attracts. This cottage could so easily be a cosy, comfortable retreat if there was more comfortable soft seating and higher quality bed mattress (very springy and bouncy). Until these issues are addressed we would not stay again and not recommend this property.

I am sorry you were unhappy with your stay in the cottage. I have asked for the stairs to be mentioned in the description of the cottage as I am fully aware some people won’t be able to manage them. This has been updated. The cottage says dog friendly as you are allowed dogs to stay but doesn’t state there is an enclosed area for them. And unfortunately we hadn’t noticed that someone had removed the hooks on the door for the coats. But they have now been replaced. I’m sorry the mattress wasn’t to your liking but I can assure you it is of high quality. Thank you for your feedback Property Owner

Good facilities and cleanliness. Hotel and restaurant next door and another pub a few minutes walk away. The only drawback for me was that the stairs were steep so would not be suitable for anyone really having difficulty with stairs and the shower over bath. I was however impressed that there were handrails on both sides of the stairs and a stair-gate at the top We had a good time in spite of the weather.
