  • "Great location for walking straight from the door."

Fantastic views and good sized accommodation. The outside of the cottage could do with a bit of attention as it sets an impression of arrival. The garden was overgrown and the paint on the front door faded and cracked. The driveway up to the cottage via three separate gates could do with some gravel or filling in. A normal car may struggle with ground clearance in places. Inside there is good accommodation and general cleanliness was good, although we did have to clean the oven and fridge on arrival before use. We also noted a lot of mouse droppings in the under sink cupboard, but it’s in the country so mice are to be expected! Similar to the outside, some of the inside was looking a little tired but nothing a lick of paint and a good dusting of the cobwebs in the skylights wouldn’t solve! We enjoyed our stay and the cottage was comfortable and warm and had everything we needed for the week.

I would go again because of the view alone. It’s a sweet cottage, it has everything you need. The beds are very comfy. One thing to note if you have kids is all the beds are doubles and for us this resulted in arguments but if you are 3 couples going on holiday together this cottage would be perfect.

Just a couple of things... We couldn't get the main oven to work. The grill/ small top oven worked fine, the main oven may need looking at. The toilet in the upstairs bathroom needs looking at - the cistern doesn't stop filling unless you lift the lid and manually push down the 'plug'. Other than that everything was great. We hope to be back soon x

  • "We loved staying at Cherry Garth."

The location for walking is fabulous. So many walks straight from the door and if you choose to stay in, the views are incredible from the lounge and kitchen windows. The three gates that need to be opened to reach the property have been fixed so that they open and close very easily. The kitchen is a lovely space with a good range of utensils etc for cooking. What would help is for there to be a basic range of herbs, spices and oils along with supplies of washing up liquid, wash powder and shower gel. Another cottage we stay at provides all of these and encourages visitors to top up as they use them. This works well and makes such a difference. But we will return and will remember to come armed with these next time.

  • "We absolutely love the property and location of Cherry Garth which is why we returned for another holiday there."

Even with a fair bit of Lake District rain, we still really enjoyed our stay. However, we do feel that a few things could be improved given the high price such as: providing enough dishwasher tablets, toilet rolls, hand soap, shower gel and washing up liquid for the week; ensuring the dishwasher is emptied before our arrival; and cleaning the windows, especially the one in the kitchen so the beautiful view can be fully appreciated. The garden could also do with at least a bit of a tidy even if the larger scale groundworks cannot be completed in the near future.

Thank you for your comments. We are pleased to see that you enjoyed your stay at Cherry Garth. As the property is self catering, a welcome pack is not always provided. We take all comments on board. The Lakelovers Owner Relations Team Property Owner

From walking in at the start to the very last day we had the best family holiday. The cottage is in such a great location for walks, lakes and also not far from the towns and shops. We even went on the bus as it stops at the end of the road. The house was spotless and it catered for everything. The little bay window seating area was our favourite place to sit in an evening and watch th sunset. Thank you for making the cottage so homely and a great place to relax after a day on the fells.

  • "We enjoyed our week at Cherry Garth, it is a lovely property in a great location."

The cottage is very spacious and comfortable. We had a few minor issues with internet connection, the tv remote control not working and being unable to fathom out how to switch on the heated towel rail in the bathroom, but aside from these everything in the cottage was fine. It is very well equipped. There are lots of walks from the door and a nearby pub serving good food. Our main criticism of this property would be the approach through three gates. We have stayed at properties with gates before and this is not a problem, but it is if they don't open and close properly! The gate nearest the house is fine, but the middle one is broken and so heavy that it was impossible for me to lift and even my husband struggled with it. The gate nearest the road also needed to be lifted and didn't have a proper catch, so had to be closed using a piece of wire each time, which was fiddly. Unfortunately, the difficult approach through these gates would deter us from visiting Cherry Garth again, which is a great shame.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us this feedback. The owner will receive a copy of this and be able to review with the farmer responsible for the gates. We are glad that you did enjoy your stay at the property and all the area has to offer. Lakelovers Owner Relations Expert Property Owner

We had the perfect family holiday and would love to return one day. The only thing I would say is the outside bin situation is a problem, they were overflowing when we arrived and by the second day local dogs had pulled it all out onto the floor and were rifling through to get at any food items.

  • "Very sorry to have to list the things which weren't up to scratch with this cottage which is in a beautiful location: Broken gate, outdoor rubbish bin overflowing, dirty walls inside, dirty windows, garden building site view from lounge and bedrooms, poo in the toilet, used tissues in waste bins, plastic bottle behind sofa, so many flies, cobwebs, cigarette butts around garden bench, oven doors smeary, TV not connected to ariel, frayed and worn towels and oven gloves, no dishcloth, microwave settings illegible."

Hello and thank you very much for your feedback which we have been looking into. We apologise sincerely for these issues which impacted on your stay and would like to respond point by point including what had been done to address them: 1. We have organised a deep clean of the cottage to be carried out immediately and the cleaning company is taking additional steps to ensure the right quality control of future weekly cleans. The company we use are very experienced and care about the service they provide so the kind of issues you experience shouldn't happen and we apologise. 2. The issue with the gate is being looked at by Lakelovers maintenance. It's a bit hard to open and close at the moment and we appreciate that can be annoying. 3. The landscaping work being done on the side of the house shouldn't impact guest at all - the garden itself is unaffected and this is just about making the place even nicer by bringing what was previously just a wild area of brambles into a an extension of the garden. The views and garden are all to the front. 4. Flies are always an issue in the lake district - we're in a farming community in Hartsop and so they will always be around. We use fly swatters if we need to which are provided but normally our guests don't find it really a problem. 5. The TV system in the lounge is connected to satellite tv and also via WiFi to streaming services and catch up TV. This is working fine and was recently upgraded. The small TV in the kitchen can be a little difficult to operate however and we are looking into upgrading that too. 6. We've also communicated the concerns about towels which we've always found to be of a good hotel quality in the past so will continue to keep an eye on that. Please do continue to provide any feedback on issues however small so that we can deal with them as they arise. Property Owner

  • "Cherry Garth is a wonderful property in a great location with stunning views."

The property is in need of a good clean and general spruce up it is looking a little tired. We had 3 problems with property two of which were preventable had proper checks and maintenance been carried out. On our first night the downstairs lights tripped a call to lake lovers and a maintenance man was sent around quickly to repair the problem, excellent service thank you. The other problems were blocked drain in the downstairs shower and no cold water in the upstairs shower, both showers out of use, not good. Once again a maintenance man was sent promptly and problems sorted. In summation Cherry Garth is a wonderful property to which we will return but please spend some time and money to bring the place back up to scratch.

Thank you for your feedback. We take these points very seriously. As noted against another comment, unfortunately during the Covid lockdowns we had a real problem with cleaning and maintenance arrangements which have now been resolved. We take great pride in keeping Cherry Garth clean and everything well-stocked and working perfectly and are sorry that this wasn't what you experienced. Our new cleaning team have really turned things around and things are back to the state that they should always be. Hopefully you will be able to experience that and the beautiful location and views on a future stay. Property Owner

In fact I phoned Lakelovers up twice to ensure that all the beds would be made and the place would have the necessary equipment. We also took our own towels, cooking equipment and mugs because of previous reviews. We did not need them. Cherry Garth was clean, well equipped (one or two more mugs wouldn’t go amiss) and an absolutely amazing location. There were one or two tiny issues with lights but waking up in the morning in the heart of the Lake District to the wonderful views from the cottage was priceless. Thank you to Lakelovers for listening to my concerns (which weren’t founded). This is a great holiday home in a great location.

  • "Cherry Garth is a lovely house, and we thoroughly enjoyed the surrounding hills and lakes, but there were a few niggles."

I was surprised that previous reviews hadn’t been acted on as several mentioned some of the following issues. In terms of accessibility, the first gate leading up to the property is very hard to manoeuvre. We’re fit people but often struggled. I realise that it’s a shared gate but if a property is to be truly accessible to all, then this needs to be changed. Secondly despite being a self catering property it’s missing basic equipment such as a sieve. I took my own having read a previous review. The dustpan referenced in another review was still broken and had holes in it. And the bathroom shelf which had been secured with wads of toilet paper, came away leading to a glass item that had been on it falling to the floor along with everything else, and smashing. We’re not overly fussy with regards to cleaning but there were big cobwebs in some of the rooms and next to the bath etc, a pack of half eaten sweets under one of the beds, and crumbs on one of the bedside tables, so it definitely wasn’t as clean as perhaps it should be. The WiFi is good, the house is warm, and the views are stunning, but given what you pay for the house it would be nice if guests were made to feel less like they don’t really matter because it’s the Lake District and people will come stay regardless.

Thank you for your feedback. We take these points very seriously and have over the last few months taken steps to try to ensure that we are back to the highest standards. As noted against another comment, unfortunately during the Covid lockdowns we had a real problem with cleaning and maintenance arrangements which have now been resolved. Clearly you experienced the impact of that and for that we apologise. Our new cleaning team are extremely professional and things are back to the state that they should always be. Hopefully you will be able to experience that and the beautiful location and views on a future stay. Property Owner

  • "Hi When we arrived the cottage appeared to be a little tired from a previous stay there ."

It seems to need redecoration inside , though on the surface looked clean - it is in need of a deeper clean of the oven ( this was pretty dirty & caked with old grease on all sides / oven roof ) , shower needs deeper clean , toilet brushes need replacing (as these were rusted & disgusting ! ) Inside kitchen cupboards need cleaning . The self catering facility needs to be reviewed by the owner - no casserole type dishes , poor condition oven tins , only 3 mugs , No milk jug & a rather old dirty plastic measuring jug only to use for liquids . No salad type bowl etc - we did struggle with2 small white lasagne type dishes daily . We loved the location & generally the coziness of the place , but were disappointed by the fact that only one of the 3 beds were made up with a bottom sheet ? This sheet also was definitely not fresh ( had creased markings where 2 people had been sleeping & not clean ) We did contact the office , when we could get a signal the next day , as we arrived later than expected at 9pm ( the pay phone in the cottage doesn’t respond to the ‘touchtone ‘ button selection of your system !) . Your staff did say that someone would drop some sheets off “within the hour” , though we were very happy to collect some ,on the Sat ( given we had to sleep on awful mattress protectors ) . However , no one from housekeeping turned up at all - we were fed up trying to get through & didn’t want to waste our holiday with the effort . So went out & bought some as it was much quicker ! We didn’t expect to have to do this , which was a shame & hope next time that housekeeping manage to ‘ cover the basics ‘ that have been paid for . Another note for the owner - the first metal gate REALLY needs to be fixed - we are relatively fit & it is a struggle as it has to be lifted & dragged along the pathway ).We understand that they are looking to landscape the garden area - the metal gate is a good place to start . Some basic cleaning products available in the sink cupboard would be useful too . We were left with one tea towel, no fresh dishcloth & a used sponge for our stay ( fresh tea towel left for us under a dirty sink !!) In the past with Lakelovers we have been left a clean ‘ welcome pack ‘ of fresh dishcloth , new sponge , etc . Seems a shame that these small issues were left out at this cottage . Hopefully you will read this & rectify for people in their next stay ?

Thank you for taking the time to submit this feedback and please rest assured that we have since been able to address the problems with cleaning and provision of supplies that you experienced. We have changed our cleaning team and are confident that the standards at the cottage are now absolutely the highest you could expect. Our issue had been that we lost continuity of the team during the Covid lockdown period and we are very sorry about that. The cottage has also been fully stocked with the items you had missed and we will continue to respond to maintenance issues as quickly as possible. Property Owner

  • "Hi The cottage is beautifully situated and very comfy re beds and sitting areas and kitchen."

However there were a few things that could be improved: There were no commercial bags to but the rubbish out and a quite threatening notice stating that if the rubbish was not but out in these then we could loose our deposit. I contacted Lakelovers on Saturday 11th Sept and on Wednesday 15th Sept to explain this and was told bags would be delivered to us, this never happened so I was unable to put the rubbish out for collection. There are 3 gates that need to be opened and closed every time you come to or leave the property the first gate is very difficult to unlatch and to swing open any person with any disability would find it impossible to move. The TV in the kitchen is unusable it will not tune into any channels and many visitors have commented on this in the guest book. The shower stopped draining after 3 days and I had to clean it out, a pretty disgusting job it was full of old hair. This should be part of the cleaners cleaning routine and not left to guests to sort out. The fly swat needs replacing it is falling apart and there are a lot of flies around. The dustpan was broken and so practically unusable. There was no sieve in the kitchen so very hard to drain rice, the colander had too large a holes in it and was going rusty. There was no soap in the kitchen. There was no washing up liquid or dishwashers tablets in the kitchen. There were no hand towels or tea towels in the kitchen and the cottage is listed as providing towels. These last 3 items were very disappointing at a time of the pandemic when we are trying to encourage everyone to wash their hands immediately on entering a property. The welcome pack was disappointing I agree with other visitors that a pint of fresh milk would be nice and maybe a box of biscuits and forget the bottle of wine. This property is quite pricey and so I would expect the above things to be present I think the owners need to reassess their priorities and Lakelovers needs to ensure that they are maintained. I might hesitate to book again through Lakelovers. The week before we stayed in a Sykes property and the standards were far higher. However the Lake District itself and the position of the property ensured we enjoyed our holiday. Yours Rachel Bayly

Secondly there were only three bath towels provided for a party of four which wasn't ideal and finally there was only one of the white refuse bags provided for rubbish (Amey won't accept refuse in anything else) which wasn't enough for a week with a family of four staying. I know these points may seem trivial but they are the first things you see when arriving at the cottage. Regardless, the stay was fantastic, the facilities are great and you could not ask for a better location.

The property

Is there a better location for a Lakeland cottage?

We doubt it.

Cherry Garth is set in a little piece of heaven.

At the end of a private lane, surrounded by panoramic views of the mountains and fells and with Brotherswater below, this property is completely and utterly glorious.

Hartsop Dodd, High Hartsop, Hart Crag, Fairfield and St. Sunday Cragg, the landscape is as old as time and yours to enjoy from first light to sunset. Hartsop, the setting for Cherry Garth, is an unspoilt hamlet in the Ullswater valley.

17th century buildings and houses make up what is now a small farming community.

There are traces of former industries such as milling, mining and spinning, which explains why many of the properties are Grade 2 listed and the village is protected by the National Trust.

The cottage itself has been stunningly updated.

The interior has been decorated in neutral tones, the furniture is modern and stylish, with stone and wooden floors in the living areas, and wall to wall carpets in the bedrooms.

Entry to the property is through the boot/drying room, leading to the welcoming sitting room with open fire, comfortable seating and magnificent view.

The large kitchen/dining room, dressed with granite and slate, is a wonderful space for family meals, planning walks and chatting over coffee.

More relaxed seating, an additional TV/DVD and radio docking station gives yet another option when deciding where to relax.

The utility room is separated from the kitchen and leads into the garden.

The first of the king size bedrooms is on the ground floor, complete with a wet room with monsoon shower.

Upstairs are two further rooms with king size beds, sharing a house bathroom with slipper bath.

Outside the property is plenty of parking as well as terrace and garden, lots of choice when it comes to deciding which view to admire.

Cherry Garth is simply stunning, and with such great views to enjoy, why even bother to leave the grounds?

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.

About the location

HARTSOP

The delightful hamlet of Hartsop lies in the Patterdale valley. It has retained its historic image with charming 17th-century grey stone cottages and working sheep farms. Hartsop is right in the heart of the Lake District and in the midst of some of the finest walking country that the area has to offer. It is a popular starting point for hill walkers climbing on the High Street range and the Helvellyn range. The village is overlooked by Brock Crags and Hartsop Dodd. It is a great centre for touring to all parts of the area and would provide a pleasant place to unwind. Ullswater Lake is less than 3 miles away giving you access to sailing, kayaking, and lake cruises. A mile from Hartsop is the small and remote lake of Hayeswater which serves as a reservoir for the town of Penrith.
