Clean and tidy upon arrival and the underfloor heating and showers we lovely. Only 2 things I would suggest is maybe a bit of a heads up for the drive from Kirkby Lonsdale to the cottage. It's a proper single track road and needs to be navigated with care. And maybe consider a visitors book so that people can leave feedback and suggestions for local places to visit etc. Have found that invaluable in other properties. Other than that a fantastic week was had. Thank you

Well equipped cottage and very clean. Owners also gave us a courtesy visit after arrival. Dog owners please note that the old stables cottage does not have a fully enclosed garden but the road is very quiet and more of a country lane. The only access to the stream is via the garden of another cottage which was disappointing for the kids, the woods are also not accessible (these are what we look for for the kids so thought I'd mention it for others). A short drive into Kirby Longsdale which is lovely with plenty of places to eat, drink or shop.

The very spacious living room with a modern kitchen provided everything we needed for 4 adults, our 4yr old granddaughter and Daisy our cocker spaniel! We appreciated the fact that the owner had popped round a couple of times to check that everything was okay. We stayed during the very hot weather in June, but this amazing old stable building with its thick stone walls, and cool ground floor bedrooms meant we all slept well. Thank you.

We found it easy to find and parking was ample for our 3 cars. The cottage is very roomy, and the living room felt very spacious for the 5 of us. The kitchen looks recent and is well equipped. The ensuite bedroom was comfy, there was a little drain smell in the bathroom and you cannot open the window but the extractor works very well and the shower has a good pressure. We had little contact with the owners but they did respond to my enquiries promptly.

Apart from the kitchen the rest of the house is full of dust and cobwebs and dead insects.the double bedroom is particularly dirty with thick dust on the headboard and dust and hairs on carpet.the furniture is very out dated and shabby.the sofa cushions are very dirty and worn and under them I found old sweets and bits of food!under the sofas the floor is very dusty.I had to clean both bath and shower before use as although they had been superficially cleaned they both had hairs in them.bathroom cabinet dirty down the sides and inside cupboard and toilet bowl covered in hairs at floor level. All doors downstairs need wiping down. The electric was off for several hours one day due to maintenance work of which we were not given notice of until it was actually off, only later to learn from a neighbour that they had been noticed 4 weeks earlier of power cut!in a message the owner claimed she had not picked up her messages from power company which may have been true but 4 weeks is plenty of time to have done so!if we had known it would not have been a problem we could have got up earlier and had breakfast before electric went off.I know I could have raised The cleanliness issues with the owner at the time but didn’t want cleaners coming in for the day whilst we were there and can’t think of how else this matter could have been resolved.

  • "We really enjoyed our stay at the old stables."

It’s in a super spot only 10 minutes from Kirkby Lonsdale. Beautiful countryside views from windows upstairs. It’s a big cottage so plenty of room for the four of us. The new kitchen was a bonus - very smart! The cottage could do with an update in places particularly the carpets in the bedrooms. The twin bedroom off the utility has a musty damp smell. Bed sheets in this room were very old/worn too and could do with an update. It also needs a thorough spring clean - lots of cobwebs in the main lounge and bathrooms dusty in places. Kitchen equipment issues - knives not sharp and the bottle opener was bent. Also no information book was left like in other cottages I’ve been too….would have been useful to have recommendations for pubs and restaurants and local walks. When I mentioned the musty smell to the owner she claimed it was to do with our dirty walking boots which was a ridiculous statement as the smell was there when we arrived. Unfortunately the owners took my issues with cleanliness in a personal way. They did come over on the first day and clean the twin bedroom off the utility again & main bathroom (after me speaking to a Sykes agent). Also towels should have been provided like in other cottages I’ve stayed in.

Thank you for your feedback, and we hope you enjoyed your stay. We felt like we did rectify the issues that were mentioned to us, like the mirror and dust. We did ask if there was anything else we could do for you to which you responded with no everything was fine, and Sykes closed the case as they also were told that you were happy with the outcome. After your stay, we did come across 2 stainless steel burnt pans that took a long time to clean, in addition, we found a significant amount of dog hairs all over the carpet and a pink stain on the king-size duvet which took several days to remove with several clean products. Once again we are sorry for the issues you experienced and hope you enjoyed your stay at The Old Stables, feedback is extremely important to us to help improve our standards. Property Owner

  • "The property was very difficult to find, not appearing on Google maps and with no phone signal in the area, so we only had Sykes' directions to go on which could do with improving."

There are three bedrooms downstairs, however on our trip one smelled very badly of the cesspit and another had the boiler in (enclosed in a cupboard) so only one bedroom and one bathroom were really useable. One of the taps in the bath kept falling off and both appeared to have been put on the wrong way around. Cleaning in the bathroom also could have been better. On the positive side, the upstairs is a wonderful space, beautifully converted, in good taste, and with plenty of nice touches like the wood above the windows, lighting and multiple speakers for the hifi system. The underfloor heating was amazing and the place never felt cold (in October). There was zero traffic noise with only birds and a river for sounds. The rainshower and woodburners were nice extras, as was the dishwasher. There was plenty of crockery and cutlery, although a decent bottle opener would have been appreciated and perhaps a pizza tray or similar. The owners seemed very nice, as were the other local people we met.

Thank you for your feedback. We work very hard to provide a great guest experience for our Customers when they stay I am sorry that you had an issue with a smell at the property. Since reading this feedback, we have attended to the drain at the property & this has now been resolved. The tap on the bath has been fixed & had the above been reported to us during your stay we would have attended to it straight away for you. The directions are the same ones that are provided to all Customers and have not been an issue in the past for anyone. We have provided the same information for many years and the postcode will bring you straight to the cottage using a satnav. I am sorry this was an issue for you. If you plan to order for a Tesco delivery during your stay, pls do get the correct post code. The post code that comes on Skyes booking is for the cottage owners.. Our delivery was collected by the cottage owner and we were not informed of the same. With no network there was no way to call Tesco to check why the delivery had not arrived. So literally we had nothing in the cottage for coffee / BF the day we arrived . . The cottage owners had left our stuff in boxes and being a hot day the milk etc was bound to have gotten bad and not a word of apology for not getting in touch with us which was a bit annoying. Tesco was not helpful either as they said they can cancel the order and we shopped for the entire lot of stuff required for our stay. and later past lunch time and when we had finished shopping we get a call from the owners to say the stuff was with them.Really put us off.. Was a wasted day 1 for us waiting for tesco and having double the stock of what we wanted. A lesson well learn was to call the contact number and get the correct post code.

The thoughtful conversion of an old stone-built barn and stable block, dating back to 1746, has resulted in this wonderful detached property of much character.

Situated in a pretty position next to Fleshbeck stream in the scattered hamlet of Mansergh, The Old Stables enjoys views over a wooded dell, teeming with bluebells in the spring, and even the occasional deer!

Upside down to take advantage of both the pretty views and the many original exposed timbers, the conversion has been carried out to the highest possible standard including solid oak floors upstairs, and underfloor heating throughout.

The open plan living area has French doors out onto a small balcony, overlooking the garden area and woods.

A magnificent conversion, warm and welcoming, ideal for any time of the year.

About the location

KIRKBY LONSDALE

Kendal 9 miles.

An attractive market town, Kirkby Lonsdale is situated in the heart of the Lune Valley, midway between the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. The town was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, and holds a 13th century Market Charter. Nowadays, Thursday is market day, a perfect opportunity for visitors to explore the variety of distinctive independent shops in the town, or the many 17th and 18th century buildings which still stand. The town was also a finalist for the High Street of the Year Award in 2016. This part of the Lune Valley was a favourite haunt of the artist Turner, and was made famous by Ruskin – his "view" of the valley is still spectacular. The medieval Devil’s Bridge spans the river, and the quiet country lanes are ideal for exploring by car, bike, or even horse. There are three golf courses nearby, as well as tennis, riding, fishing and a variety of riverside and country walks, making the area an ideal location for a break, whatever time of year. When voting Kirkby Lonsdale as the ‘Best Place to Live in The North West’ in 2019, The Sunday Times commented it is “An unbeatable Lake District location, bags of community spirit and one of the cleanest high streets in the country".
